@larrydavis Maybe if the state didn't have stupid open carry laws and the school could actually guarantee their safety if something actually happened it wouldn't have been canceled. But that was the point of contention and why it got called off.
While I disagree with a lot of Anita Sarkeesian's viewpoints, it's these death threats that are making me more and more ashamed to call myself a gamer.
Why don't you instead join up with me and 99% of gamers who are enjoying games, while shaking our heads at the stories about corrupted journalists, gamers acting like criminals and feminist extremists? There's no reason to be ashamed of being a gamer. These people are not 'the gamers', just like 99% of feminists won't care about representation of women in a game when there are real problems out there, and I'm sure corruption is not the norm in journalism.
This man gets it.
Oh because representation of women in games, a media consumed by literally millions, maybe billions, of people isn't a real issue that needs to be discussed? Don't assume what feminists care about when you aren't one.
Also, corruption is pervasive in ALL forms of journalism and a huge problem with GG is gamers being unable to separate opinion pieces from journalism i.e. what happened to Jenn Frank.
To be honest, I've refused to call myself a gamer for going on two years now after a decade of calling myself such. GamerGate just gives me yet another reason to continue that refusal.
. It should be very obvious that such personal relationships with a journalist is an ethical problem, and to hide it behind the fact that a woman's sexlife is involved is just dishonest.
I seriously don't know what to tell you. If you think that a woman right to privacy is less important than this fight, I doubt ethics is something that really matters to you.
If you think that you imply from an ex's blog and then accuse the woman in question, yes you are condoning harassment.
Also, all those accusations were proved to be patently false.
I've lost count how often I've seen GamerGate supporters cite disproven information, especially slandering claims against Zoe and Anita that were debunked very quickly. It makes it really hard to take the movement seriously on top of the hate speech, the bomb threats, the rape threats, the death threats, the deflection of screaming "YOU'RE JUST AN SJW USING GAMES FOR YOUR AGENDA" as if GamerGate isn't an agenda and I haven't been playing games since before some of the supporters were born.
@rzxvc: If it were only "a few loonies" then IT WOULDN'T BE A PROBLEM. I was getting harassed so badly for criticising GG, even fairly and with reason, and I just up and ended up deleting a Twitter account I had for /years/ because harassment and spamming got so bad. You block one GGer, another five show up drowning you out with screaming and brushing off all your points as "SJW talk" and then get pissed when you don't take GG seriously.

Thankyou Patrick for reporting about this. Not enough major sites are taking a hard stance on this stuff when we really need them to. Honestly I was a bit disappointed you hadn't covered it like this up until this point and I'm glad you realized that avoiding it wasn't the answer.
Also can people in the comments stop brushing this stuff off as mental illness? 1. Mental illness is not an excuse to harass people and send them threats. 2. Mental illness isn't an inherent cause in shitty behavior. Even healthy, stable people can just be awful assholes for a variety of reasons. 3. You're just attaching more stigma to something that is already stigmatized enough by society as it is.
Am I really a misogynist for not donating to Zoe Quinn? I have a mortgage, a massive amount of credit card debt, and a ton of stuff wrong with my house. I'm just now starting to get a handle on my debt.
The fact is I know I'm not a misogynist. I know I'm not a bad person for not donating. I just don't appreciate it being inferred by people I respect. But I also know internet fame breeds vitriol in an audience. Never fails. Just up to me to be the understanding one. It doesn't hurt my feelings too much.
I wouldn't get twisted up by people calling you a misogynist for not donating. Either they are idiots or it was something else, and if you're sure it wasn't something else then they were just being ridiculous.
Like, I DO actually support Zoe Quinn but haven't donated to her - I'm not a misogynist. I'm unemployed! I can't donate to someone when I'm just as bad off financially, but I do at least signal boost them for those that are interested.
I'm super bummed that Jenn Frank still wants to leave, a totally justified move, but with whats come out I'd hoped maybe she'd come back.
Yeah I'm really upset. I'm hardly close to her, I've never met her in person but through all my interaction with her on social media she was the nicest, funniest lady and her writing is so good. The thing that pisses me off the most is that she was attacked by people who didn't understand how journalism worked and didn't understand the prestige behind the site her op-ed was posted on. People wonder why it's difficult for some to take GamerGate supporters seriously... this is why. If someone's argument for being against corruption is harassing someone who wrote a 500 word opinion piece with no disclaimers because op-eds don't generally use them then it's hard to take what they are championing seriously.
I don't blame her for leaving, though. I myself am considering going into entomology or mycology instead of games now from harassment towards myself and others and I haven't even published a game yet... probably not ever gonna finish what I've been working on, either. It's not worth it. You know what won't harass me for pushing inclusivity in games? Moths.
@zevvion: People think it's a white man subjugating a person of color, when I feel like anyone with eyes should realize that they are both clearly very Asian.
I feel like this post should be memed to hell and back.

IMHO it's been a trainwreck on both sides. Horror overreacted and so did a lot of the userbase. I wonder how easily this could've gone if another staff member intervened and looked at it with a more level head. Instead we got Horror and others banning left and right, and a ton of the userbase reacting in a really hostile manner (i.e. death threats, hate speech, etc which is NEVER called for) which just made things worse.
