Activision Rumor Fest 2011

Continuing the discussion on the Bombcast over the Activision lay offs and their business model I present the evidence of their next big thing:

BUNGIE

Clearly everyone has heard that Activision owns the rights to publish Bungie's new IP for the next ten years, but up until now we have had no clue what that new IP would be. According to a rumor story on Kotaku from this morning the new IP (known as Destiny) will be a MMO-FPS (Massively Multiplayer Online First Person Shooter). Which if Bobby Kotick's ideas of subscriptionizing COD is anything to go off of, Destiny will be a subscription based game.

Whether this is a good thing or bad thing is a different story, but what this shows is that Activision is likely going to stick to the same business it has in the past: find something hott, get it, and make $. However, because Bungie owns the rights to the IP a situation like Infinity Ward won't happen, which is some good news.

Bobby Kotick's idea of having a subscription based MMOFPS is not new by any stretch of the imagination.  If it says MMO in front of it and is run by a big company, there will be a subscription, almost guaranteed.

I know thats what I'm saying, Kotick really wants a subscription based FPS so if Destiny is what the rumors say it is then its likely it will be subscription based.

This news was extremely important. Thank you for the update.

@Napalm: I edited the first post to include a link to the original article if you wanna read the whole thing.

Wait, isn't Blizzard working on a MMOFPS? Does this mean Bungie and Blizzard are working together? Oh...Christ.

Unless it does something really imaginative with the fps genre, I'm not interested. I've had enough of fps'.

@IBurningStar: Where is it rumored about Blizzard working on an FPS? And that two punch combo would be awesome: Bliazzard knows MMOs and Bungie knows FPS....

@CookieMonster: As a Bungie fanboy I would be interested, plus there aren't many MMOFPS games out there.

@LongMasterWolf:  Blizzard working on a sci-fi fps has been a long time running rumor, I don't even remember what the original source was. All I remember is that their next gen MMO was code named Titan, it was going to be a new science fiction IP, and it was not going to compete with WoW. Put on a tin foil hat for the next bit. I can't remember what show it was, but in this one episode some people were playing what looked like Halo and in the closing credits for it Blizzard Entertainment was acknowledged.

I could post a rant about how fucked up Activision is.  Instead, I'll just leave a picture of this doughnut burger.

@IBurningStar: Well it would make sense if Bungie was working with Blizzard as Blizzard takes 200 years to release a game. So if Bungie was doing the heavy lifting and Blizzard supplying tech for the MMo side of the coin they might be able to release this game in a decent time frame.

Seeing as Blizzard is super stretched (Diablo III, WoW, and the new Starcraft IIs) Bungie taking the initial idea for an MMOFPS from Blizzard and going off that base would make sense.

I was under the impression that the deal made between Bungie and Activision was strictly publishing and that Bungie still had complete control over the whats, whens and hows of development.

@ProfessorEss:  Yes, you are correct. Activision has the rights to publish Bungie's new IP (and only their new IP) for the next ten yeas. What I was talking about was that Bungie might try to get some assets from Blizzard if they are making an MMO.

Not sure how I feel about the possibility of a Blizzard/Bungie FPS.  Could be really cool.  Could be another CoD/Halo, which I wouldn't really care for.  If they were to come out with something Planetside-ish, but more polished, more support and more community, I might be interested.

Wait for the announcement that Battlefield 3 will be subscription based...

that sounds pretty cool. i don't know if i would play the game but still. i kind of want to see a FPS MMO. i think it would be kind of like same weapons just different states to them.
