Improbably Good. 0

It’s hard to believe that only two games have been based on a sport as popular as softball. While it may lack the television coverage of the major sports, it’s clearly played by more Americans than its big brother inspiration. Every night across the lower 48 you’d be hard pressed to find a local park that was not filled with blue and white collar schmoes defying their age and expanding waistlines taking pleasure in swinging and missing. Few office workers cannot be drawn into the chase for the e...

Mass Effect 0

Title: Mass EffectCapsule Summary: As with all BioWare games, there is at least one element of Mass Effect that is excellent, but unfortunately, as with all BioWare games there are more that are uneven in quality, some of them game breakers.Review:You can tell that some groups of BioWare were really into what they were doing. The teams in charge of capturing the expressions of real people and putting them into the digital avatars. The directors in charge of voice acting. The designers who crafte...

Have Your Collar Back Girl 0

Capsule Summary:With lessons learned from their prior work, Heavenly Sword, Ninja Theory pays homage to Naughty Dog's Uncharted series of games while loosely following the story of one of the classics of Chinese literature, Journey to the West.Review:Game development, like any endeavor, is iterative. Each game borrows to some degree from the games that preceded it, and there is no penalty for that among gamers so long as the latest version improves on the inspiration. The game from which Enslave...

Mister Fix It. 0

Matchbox Caterpillar Construction Zone, released in 2000 for the Gameboy Color is what I describe as a "Productivy-Sequence" game. Based on a real-life work activity you must go through various tasks in a certain sequence in order to complete the level. There are 26 levels, which take anywhere from a minute to 12 minutes to complete. In each level you control one of about 8 different pieces of Caterpillar heavy machinary. Your perspective is top-down and, as is typical for the Gameboy Color, the ...

Much Better Than You've Heard 0

Reservoir Dogs is one of the seminal films of the 1990's.  It birthed a generation of independent film, and placed an emphasis on dialog over action and art.  In fact, the most action filled scenes of the film are relayed entirely through words -- you don't see the jewel store shoot-out, or the car chase.  Instead the tension comes from the viewer constantly being forced to ask, "what comes next".As a result, the licensed game of the film had little to no chance of living up to it's source...

Sixth Generation Open World at it's Best. 0

Scarface: The World Is Yours had a lot stacked against it when it was released.  From appearances, it seemed to be a GTA clone, released when the market was glutted with them.  It is a game licensed from a 23 year old movie which ended with (spoiler) the lead protagonist being mowed down in such a manner that precluded the possibility of any sequel.  Adding to its probable demise was a scattered critical response, with EGM giving it a 6.5 (Metacritic 76%).  Not a good starting point. As a r...

Put This On Your Radar 0

I came across Air Traffic Chaos while looking for DS games that support the little used Rumble Pak, the GBA cartridge sized force-feedback accessory for the DS and DS Lite.  Ordinarily I would not have even picked up this Majesco published game due to the comically bad front cover art which includes a westernized anime character saying, by means of a speech bubble, "I am an air traffic controller".  It is a shame that many would overlook this game on the basis of its cover art, but underst...

A Solid RE4 Clone 0

No-one ever complains about safe and dependable cars.  Companies like Volvo and Subaru keep pumping out stolid, reliable cars that have basically looked the same for the last 30 years.  When it comes to games however, it is a different story. Safety and reliability often lead to mediocre critical and commercial success.  Which is pretty much how Digital Extreme's over-the-shoulder shooter was received in 2008 when it was released for the PC, 360 and PS3.Dark Sector itself, in a vacuum, has...

No Objections 0

If you had not played or seen Capcom's Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney series you could not be faulted for thinking High Voltage Software's Harvey Birdman Attorney at Law is one of the most creative and innovative ways to revive the point-and-click adventure games that were so popular on the PC in the 1990's.  This entry however, also published by Capcom, comes after Phoenix Wright has already brought justice to the long forgotten genre, and as a result the developers could quite easily be cha...
