Games Finished in 2011

  • The Back to the future trilogy has always been a favourite movie series for me and for years I thought it would make a perfect adventure game. Using Day of the Tentacle as a template for time travel games. There are so many possibilities.

I still think that it would but unfortunately this ain't it.

That's not to say that it's bad, just seriously disappointing.

  • 10 hours of intense, dark, scary game-play.

    I fecking loved it.

  • Perfect length, new puzzle elements, fantastic voice work and new open environments to break up the white rooms.

    Superb with a mad ending.

  • Initially I thought this got off to a slow start as the game starts with a huge battle and then dumps you in a quiet new city with limited powers. However once I started to explore the game got addictive as hell. Searching the city for every last blast shard, message drop and completing all the side missions became so much fun.

The powers are a blast to use, the bigger titan monsters take some beatings and it's a loooong game. I think I must have put about 30 hours into it.

I collected all the collectibles and all the PS3 trophies with the exception of the evil missions as I was playing as a good guy. Now I need to go back and kill some street performers and get my evil on.

  • For the most part I played the game, sneaking around and hacking, avoiding contact with the enemies at all cost and knocking them out rather than killing them.

Unfortunately there are a bunch of boss battles that require you to actually shoot and kill someone. The change in game play is a bit abrupt meaning the first time you come across the bosses it can be a bit tough if you are not properly augmented.

Personally I didn't have a problem with the bosses as luckily I had put in a certain augment that made the bosses pretty easy and always kept a large gun in my inventory just for the boss battles.

If you spend the time to read all the emails and ebooks etc the universe is fleshed out in a convincing manner.

Loved the story, the sneaking mechanics and the atmosphere in the game.

  • Finished the fight, remained Brothers to the end and a hoard of other taglines about shooters. Took 12 hours which is pretty decent length.

    Pros

    * Gameplay is still as fantastic as before.

    * Graphics are gorgeous and not just brown.

    * Good enemy variety.

    * The bit when Mad World plays cry

    * The menu system contains the motherload of stats which is fantastic for tracking everything in the game.

    Cons

    * Pacing is a bit off and has a couple of lulls in it.

    * On Hardcore it is a hell of a lot easier than the previous games. I hate to think what normal or casual is like.

    * Nice to have a ending, but it leaves too many questions left over.

  • A superb blend of voice work, atmosphere attention to detail and a rouges gallery of villains all help to steep you in the game world.

The combat perfectly fits the Batman character as you alternate between all out kick ass melee and stealth. The combos flow together with a rhythm that soon becomes second nature. The gadgets are put to good use to access areas, solve puzzles or just smack goons in the head with.

    I loved it.

  • While none of the set pieces quite hit the heights of the 2nd game (with the train level or the helicopter across the rooftops sequence), they were still a lot of fun to play and exciting as hell.

I finished the game in two sittings (in 9hs 15mins according to the stats)

While not quite Uncharted 2, I Loved it.

  • I was impressed with the game. The shooting is massively enjoyable, with a wide array of weapons that have multiple ammo types meaning that customising the way you like to play is a lot of fun. Personally I liked to go with the Shotgun for mutants as they get close pretty fast, the Authority rifle for all other types of enemies and the wingstick as the alternate fire.

The Wingstick is my favourite toy in the game. It's a glave type throwing device (Think the movie Krull) that spins at an enemy, bouncing off surfaces and decapitating them as they run towards you. It never gets old and just gets better with the advanced model you get later in the game.

While the story is functional and the atmosphere in the game is great. It seriously loses it towards the end making me think that the game was rushed. It has a disappointing last few missions and it felt very rushed. The expected final boss battle never materialised and the game just ended leaving you thinking WTF happened next.

It took me about 12:30 hrs to complete the game and I had a hell of a lot of fun.

  • The Behemoth of video games is back for another year, but without most of Infinity Ward's staff. Still didn't stop it selling $775m in 5 days.

Is it bigger, better and more insane than last years action feast?

Unfortunately the answer is a resounding NO.

It's shorter (it took me 5 hours to complete one hour less than MW2), less interactive and instantly forgettable. The Transformers 3 of video games, all bluster, no substance.

  • Fantastic music and a decent story.

Wish there was more of an actual game though.

Still, I enjoyed what there was of it.
