@fram: You're right, Minecraft is a big deal. But what happens now? What should Microsoft do with it? Minecraft isn't exactly an IP ripe for a sequel. Does MS try to make lightning strike twice with a second game, or contnue to port the original game to every other system and sell merch. I honestly have no idea what should/would be done with this property.

Ads, analytics, and branding. Serious big money stuff. Convince other companies you have the means to reach hundreds of millions of dedicated consumers for years to come. Got a movie coming out targeted at preteens and kids? Give microsoft money to produce exclusive content in the game and advertise. Minecraft branded movie branded merchandise. Kids want to keep up with the latest edition of Minecraft, tell your parents to upgrade you to the New Surface 4 Pro.

Everything you just said makes me cringe. I'm 20, and have probably put in 1000+ hours into Minecraft and Feed the Beast over the last 4 years. To know that the property will be hijacked to cater to child demographics sucks and it'll probably continue to happen (the Star Wars prequels come to mind). However, Microsoft is not Disney. Microsoft has little to no experience with the kind of marketing and merch push that you're talking about.

There was literally nothing said about alpha backers not being entitled to a share of the profit generated by a multibillion dollar business deal. . . .

It frustrates me when people think that being a backer is equivalent to being an investor. You pay them money for an unfinished game so that you can receive said game earlier. That's it. There is nothing in any EULA or agreement that guarantees you any stake in the company or property.

It would be out of character for Notch if this sale goes through.

Like that matters in the face of two billion fucking dollars.

At this point, with this amount of money, it'd be fucking irresponsible not to take the deal. I don't presume to know Notch's personal life, but if it's anything like mine then he's got bills, he's got dependents, and he's got to make sure their futures are secure should anything bad happen to him. The peace of mind alone one could get from such a deal is worth it.

I mean, Holy Wayne, how is this is even a debate?

And you don't think he already has close to a billion dollars if not more at this point? Think about how rich this guy already is considering every copy of Minecraft ever sold in the last 4 years. He's already set for life.

$2 Billion.

Mojang is worth more than ALL OF TWITCH.TV. This feels like I live in crazy land where people just throw money out on the street for no reason. Can anyone explain this to me?

It's baffling to me as well. Minecraft was lightning in a bottle that's most likely already run its course. I doubt a sequel would achieve anywhere the same success as the first. Meanwhile, Twitch is a service that is used everyday by millions and only has potential to grow its userbase. We now officially live in bizzaro-world.

Well, Mojang already has bajillions of dollars, why not a few bajillion more. Also, I don't know if you guys know this, but Notch has always been a hugely pretentious hypocrite. I hope he buys a private island and goes away for a while.

Watching half of the people I follow on twitter (including bombers) tweet nonstop this morning about apple announcements made me shake my head. Even if the tweets are sarcasm, you're still participating in Apple's hype machine.

This can only be a good thing for the Oculus proper.

What happens when something newer than the New 3DS comes out? Think further than 12 seconds into the future Nintendo.

Newer 3ds? That has them covered for at least 3 more years!

What'll they do after "Newest 3DS"?

THE 3DS

I think Nintendo is just trying to screw over kids whose parents have little to no understanding of console names. "wtf mom, this is the New 3DS. That's from like 3 years ago."
