Underrated Games I Love

Those games that the masses seem to despise. Whether due to impatience, some form of group-think, or simply a clash of tastes.

List items

  • This is a game that I played from start to finish, and loved nearly every bit of it. My only issue was that it took me a while to get started with it because of the way the main character, Capell starts out. Regardless of this slow start, it became one of my all-time favorites. Capell amazed me with his change of character, and to me, he is one of the most believably human characters I've ever seen in a game. I would say the character was relatable and even inspirational at times. My final impressions of it are that it was an epic adventure, a unique and well-told story, had great characters (specifically Capell, Aya, and Edward), and was a very enjoyable and touching experience over-all.

  • To me, this seems to be the Final Fantasy that old fans didn't like. I wouldn't personally know, as I am a fairly new fan of SquareEnix games.

People complain of it's similarity to Star Wars. Maybe I'm missing something, or maybe I'm blinded by what remains of my Star Wars fandom days, but I didn't see too much that could be called direct Star Wars knock-offs. I thought that the cast was original and believable. The characters that really made the game for me were Basch, Balthier and Ashe. Sure, the plot had a few holes, and I hated Vaan, but to me it was still a lot more solid than many games I've played.

  • The Last Remnant is a very unique gaming experience. The combat is incredibly different from any other game I've played, so it is a bit hard to describe. It can be frustrating, and it is a challenge to be sure. Yet despite the hate it received from those that thought it was too hard, or forgot to install it to the hard drive, or just plain didn't like the story (which I think is interesting), I find The Last Remnant to be compelling, and unique in a ocean of retro turn-based RPGs. Besides that, I actually find the main character relatable (which is extremely rare for me in a JRPG).

  • Gladius just didn't get enough exposure. I think that with a few tweaks, and better publicity early on, Gladius would be a more recognized name in the gaming world. Too bad it didn't earned enough money for a sequel.

  • "Love" may be a strong word to use for Alon D'ar, but it was actually a pretty decent game in it's own right. If you take the good and leave the bad, there are still a few characters and aspects of this game that are interesting enough to give it a shot.

  • Man...I had to put it on here after reading the highly biased article on here for it...jerks.

I missed out on XII, but it looked really cool, and unashamed in its references to Star Wars. Also, of course, Gladius.

XII was good. Mainly for it's cast of main characters: Basch, Balthier and Ashe...I didn't like the others very much, though I enjoyed giving Penelo (a teenage girl) a claymore. It was full of interesting concepts and locations. The combat is also a lot different than tradition turn-based, and the "License Point" system for learning abilities/upgrading your characters is pretty cool.
In spite of all of this, I have since...withdrawn it's standing when compared to X. I have to say that in all honesty, I was having a hard time getting into it when I wrote this, and now I see that X is the better game.

Basch, Balthier and Ashe are amazing though...oh, and Gabranth. Man, I have way too much to say about games...sorry. lol
