Xbox 360 slim - what we should of got in 2005

Like most people, I can't help but think back to times in the past that raise the question - what if?

Back in 2005 I sat around with my friends to watch MTV (of all the channels Microsoft had to choose from...) and we waited in anticipation to see what Microsoft would bring to the next generation console war.

At that time, I already owned an original Xbox console. It cost me £115, came with some very good games, was a bit bulky and heavy but I was sad to see it go. That big black box won a place in my heart. The purpose of the system was to play games, nothing more - the essence of a games console. The features the original Xbox had such as an internal hard drive, comfortable controllers (at least for me) and a games line up that constantly pushed itself to be better without complacency. It wasn't trying to be super stylish like the Apple gadgets of today, it didn't need to organise your photos or surf the web or twitter to people - it simply did its job and did it well.

So as I sat there waiting, I couldn't be happier. Here was the next generation console, the improvement over an already great machine. Undoubtedly my expectations were high. Microsoft already had Xbox Live, a great service. Great games such as Halo, Forza MotorsportChronicles of Riddick, Brothers in Arms - even now I can name 20+ great games for that console! And most importantly, they had the drive to be the best.

But what I witnessed on May 12th 2005 was something akin to waking up on Christmas morning and finding your presents replaced by a piece of jewellery... Yes that's right, jewellery! It's expensive, looks good, you can show it off to people but it essentially doesn't have a job. The new "sucked in" Xbox 360 with its white colour, large power brick and of course later, the three rings of death was certainly an anticlimax.

But I gave it a chance, I embraced change and bought one. But this story isn't about how the console had hardware errors, or even bad games.

In the back of my mind I always knew, that this console wasn't the best it could of been. The design wasn't up to Microsofts previous standards, it was loud, bulky (if you include the power brick) and it didn't have the build quality of the original Xbox. Perhaps its because the original Xbox was build like a tank, but still...

Flash forward to the present, I no longer have an Xbox 360 (had a PS3 for a while but that didn't work out). What I have instead is the feeling of what if? What if the Xbox 360 slim came out in 2005. What if that sleek version with built in wifi and a hard drive that is actually inside it instead of sitting on the top, what if the design was so good it wouldn't have hardware problems. What if Microsoft actually made the 360 look like the original (which the new slim model does). I'll think you'll agree that that is the version of the Xbox 360 that should of launched.

So sooner or later I'm going to bite the bullet again and buy an Xbox 360 slim, for better or worse. But this time, I'm hoping things will be different.

No when the 360 launched it was the console to own because it was alot cheaper than the PS3 and it actually had games to play unlike the PS3 which for the longest time was a gaming wasteland, its good now but in those early years it was not a good purchase.

I think the Xbox 360 Slim should've been the console back in 2005, not necessarily with the features and shit, but rather a quiet and reliable console. That's really I ask for.

Yep. Just like the people who say "try and" instead of "try to."

I think that the early years of the 360 was pretty reasonable in what they offered. One thing that made me buy a 360 over a PS3 was obviously the price. The ps3 came with all the bells and whistles on all models, where as if you wanted stuff like Wifi or the short-lived HD-DVD player on your 360, you'd pay extra and in the long run you'd end up paying the same amount for all that as if you would have bought a PS3.

I think thats a big part of why the 360 was way bigger in North America and Europe up untill they dropped the PS3's price. You'd buy the system for half as much, and if you stuff like wifi, you'd pay extra, which seems fair to me. You werent paying anymore than what the PS3 was going for, but you weren't paying for features you weren't going to use.

Plus back in 05 wifi was still relatively new, so there wasn't a a strong need to include wifi out of the box in the 360. Now we're 5 years in the future theres a lot of people that use wifi, enough to warrant that stuff being included in new consoles.

I like the design more of the PS3, but the look of the PS3 slim is fantastic as well. The original ps3 even looked expensive, so kudos to Sony to make a premium looking device match the premium price tag. I got the original in '08 for 200 bucks on ebay, great purchase to this day. Then I got the slim, and I see what people are saying about how much nicer it looks. Sure, but IMO premium looking is better than slimmer and more reserved, after all, it will just sit on my table all day, its not like I have to move my systems around, so I'll take the giant, expensive looking thing over slimmer anyday.

If you ask me, the original Xbox was pretty bulky, though it was quiet and that's something I can't say about my old 360. It was louder than a vacuum cleaner...

Wow thanks for all the comments guys, I'll have to post some more articles seen as the feedback seems positive.

To answer a couple of your points, there's no way I would expect the console to launch with 250GB hard drive or wifi G, probably the 60GB hard drive would of done and standard wifi for the day but like Burns098356GX points out - hardware goes out of date and nothing is future proof. People will always find something to complain about!

It just seemed to me that Microsoft were too concerned with their attach rate at launch rather than building a well designed console.

I dont think many people were using wifi like they are now. Or if they did, it wouldn't be enough to include it in the console. Then again, back then it would have been a B, then when G came out people would have bitched it didn't have G.

Also, I accept my 360 despite it's flaws. I've only had one RROD, but for the most part I can't complain. I will be trading in for the new slim model, but do I really need it? No. But it looks sleek and shiny, and it looks good next to my TV and PS3.

I think i share your opinion exactly.. i had an Xbox 360 around launch.. two of them actually, the first one broke and the second one lasted for about a year then i stuck with the Wii, eventually buying a PS3 slim around the end of 2009. I recently bought an Xbox 360 S and yea it should have been the system we got in 2005, no arguments there... the difference between this one and the old model are night and day not just cosmetically but internally as well. Just the reduction in noise would be good enough for me, the 360 Slim is as quiet as my ps3 and it doesn't make annoying cracking noises when it's temperature changes from use.

P.S good read.
