My Favorite Video Game Music of 2013

As I continue gnashing my teeth trying to finalize my top 10 games of the year, I find myself reflecting on the great music that accompanied many of the year's best games. As an appreciator of not only quality music in video games, but also how a great soundtrack can enhance an otherwise good game, one of my favorite trends of recent years has been the influx of wonderful video game soundtracks. 2013 continues this trend, providing tons of great video game music, and I'd like to highlight some of my personal favorites. I've picked out 10 video game soundtracks that I particularly enjoyed this year, and then picked a standout track from each one to share below. I hope you enjoy listening, and please feel free to share some of your favorite video game music of the year!

Loved the music in Ni no Kuni. Every piece of that game seemed lovingly crafted, and the music complemented it all spectacularly well.

Gah, how could I forget to make a music based Top 10 for this year! I'm going to have to start from scratch, but thanks for reminding me!

I like your taste in music. Enjoyed the music in all those games that I played!

I'm really liking the music in Rogue Legacy so far, especially the tower. The first part of that particular tune is kind of similar to the music in Sly Cooper, actually, which I've also been listening to. I wouldn't even know what to call that kind of sneaky slow music. Heist Jazz? Jams Bond?

The mariachi stuff from Guacamelee ain't too bad either, if it happens to be your kind of thing. Ditto for whatever madcap chiptune raver nonsense was in Electronic Super Joy.

Oh, and Rayman Legends too. I feel like most of the music in that game was either lifted directly from Origins or just sounded similar, but the remixes of actual songs for the big musical finales for each world were outstanding, if only for the way they used items and enemies in the stage as instruments. Plus, even more awesome spy music for the underwater stages. Maybe Monaco: What's Yours is Mine has even more music like that, seemed like a good year for it.

Last but not least, Project X Zone did with its music what it did with much of its presentation: made you nostalgic for the various games it references. Every character, playable or no, had at least one or two leitmotifs lifted from the games they came from and given modern remixes, similar to the way Smash Bros does its music. It's really great if you like a lot of Capcom and Sega music from the games in their back catalogue.

@mento: I just started Rogue Legacy a few days ago, and haven't gotten to the tower, but that theme sounds awesome. I also really like the music in Guacamelee... it was one of the tough cuts I made, along with Gunpoint (there's some more jazzy spy-like music).

I haven't played Electronic Super Joy, but just listening to that music almost makes me want to go buy the game on the spot!

I don't think it's possible for Joe Hisaishi to create bad music. Ni No Kuni's music is gorgeous. I love the big dramatic march in one of the towns.

Man, I really need to play Runner 2. I like how they just used the music from the first game, but made it really grand.

So many games had great music this year. As mentioned the tower in Rogue Legacy is great, and there have been some fantastic orchestral scores in a couple of OK games like Remember Me and Puppeteer.
