I realized I never actually gave my opinion on the game back when I posted in this thread originally: Skyward Sword is one of my favorite games in the series. I still prefer Wind Waker, but Skyward Sword looks incredible; the art style never stops being pretty to look at, and the way they break up areas with color is fantastic. The whole sand-sea section with the timeshift stones was just great. Character designs are pretty much universally outstanding as well, with what remains the coolest version of Impa and my all-time favorite outfit for Link. Something about the chainmail under the tunic and the pants just works super well.
Besides looks (and the obviously impressive music) it's also just really well designed. The Ancient Cistern is probably one of my favorite dungeons in any Zelda game, and I still remember realizing what the Sky Keep was as one of the coolest moments I've had in any game. (I go in, find a sliding block puzzle that I don't understand, muck it up completely, and figure I'll back out and reset the puzzle so I can find out what I'm actually supposed to be doing... and then the screen shakes and I realize that the puzzle I just messed up is the dungeon I'm standing in, and now I've gotta navigate that heap. It was awesome.)
Also had a pretty good story. People usually don't talk much about the character interactions and stories in these games, but that whole scene where Zelda seals herself inside a crystal and has Link promise to break her out when she doesn't need to remain in the temple any longer was pretty touching. Ghirahim was a good antagonist, the people on Skyloft were a fun crowd... I will say I probably did less side-content than in any other Zelda game, but that's largely just because I was way into the main story. I'm also one of the few who like Fi, so I guess I'm firmly in the minority on just about everything now.
Also: Update on my Niece playing the game. She continued to button through tutorial messages and then ask me how to do the thing the game just tried to tell her how to do. It usually ended with her giving me the Wii remote and having me show her what, exactly, she needed to do. After a few weeks she switched to playing Ocarina of Time on the 3DS... and doing about the same thing there. Some people are beyond help, even when the game tries to tell you what you're supposed to be doing and how. She's way into Smash Brothers and Hyrule Warriors, though.
