IT'S FINALLY HERE

When I say that I have been anticipating Fallout 4, I want y'all to understand that is a huge understatement.

I have been imagining what this game might be like for years. I have theorized and brainstormed with friends for hours at a time. I have, occasionally, told myself it'll never happen, and that the Fallout franchise is dead, and we'll never get another one.

For once, I'm very happy to be wrong. :D

There are a lot of folks on my Twitter timeline worrying that this is a "gritty" and "grimdark" version of Fallout--I'd like to remind those people that Fallout trailers are always gritty and grimdark, but the actual games are different. Fallout 3 shows us an abandoned, crumbling city full of regret and carnage. Fallout: New Vegas literally opens with a Fiend being shot in the head. Ron Perlman always talks about how war never changes, which is about as gritty as it gets. It'll be fine.

No joke, I don't care what this game is like. I don't care if it's not perfect. I don't care if it's literally just Fallout 3 again but with brighter colors and better textures. I kid you not, I would play the hell out of that. The only thing I don't want it to be is a prequel. I got a little worried with the flashes of pre-bomb America(?) we see in the trailer, because I don't want to experience that turmoil. I don't want to see those people frightened and dying, even if they're just pixels. The terror of nuclear war is actually my least favorite part of the franchise, and yes I know how silly that sounds. (I'm still upset about those text files you find in Honest Hearts detailing the life of that ranger.) But I don't care if it's silly; I don't want an entire game with that kind of emotional gut-punch.

Naturally, of course, I also don't want things like gratuitous amounts of hurtful isms, or unnecessary rape plots, or fridged women, or other shitty stuff like that. But I'm not too worried. Fallout has been pretty good at avoiding most of those, (at least as much as any video game ever does these days, while we wait for our dev groups to diversify) and what has cropped up usually doesn't feel like it's crammed in there just to be "edgy" or whatever. I was also pretty disappointed to see a white guy at the end of the trailer-- surely the devs could have left the identity of the Wanderer an enigma as they've done so well in previous games? Failing that, it would have been quite simple to put in a person of color or even a woman. (Or both!) It's a missed opportunity, and incongruous with a franchise that prides itself on you getting to play and create whatever kind of Wanderer you can imagine.

Otherwise, though? I don't care. I just don't. If that makes me a bad gamer or a fool or whatever--so be it. I'd rather have few to no expectations and have a blast with this game than become a cynic and hate on every little thing.

I just want Fallout.

Hey, is this thing on?

Oh hey, it's my Giant Bomb account. Haven't been here in awhile. Too long, maybe. Hard to say for sure.

Year passed. Lots of stuff happened. I won't bore y'all with it here. Long story short, I'm a much different person now, as you'd hope after so much time has gone by. (They never seem to talk about that in TV shows where people are immortal...)

Anyway, mostly I'm here to pump some life back into this old profile. While I'm here, please enjoy this link to a YouTube video which is a compilation of hilarious clips of Austin Walker (newest addition to the GB crew) over at the Streamfriends Twitch channel. I'm delighted to have been a part of a few of these streams. (And many others) I didn't make the video but it's fantastic so I'm putting it as many places as I can think of. Enjoy.

Here's hoping maybe I post here a bit more regularly from now on. :)

Funniest game...

Took me a minute to think of this one, and I'm still not sure of my answer. But I'd have to say it's a toss up between Portal and No One Lives Forever. In Portal's case, the humor was very dark and left me feeling vaguely horrified, but it was still amusing. NOLF's humor was more upfront, and completely absurd, though lovably so. I mean, what's not perfect about fighting to stop a criminal organization that uses a puppet to deliver its threats and kills people via farting? That game had me cracking up at every turn.

I may have to add Persona 4 to this list, too. I've just started playing it, and while I'm not laughing with it very much, I am definitely laughing at it a lot. Mostly because I keep thinking. "Dude, Jeff and Vinny are going to love this part when they get to it on the Endurance Run"

Just a few new games...

Went out to NC this weekend to go see Shinedown in concert. Sure, it was a six hour drive, but the boys are worth it. The show was amazing, even if I did contract some sort of weird throat devouring concert plague and now can no longer speak...but you know what you DON'T need your voice for? PLAYING VIDEO GAMES, OF COURSE. =D Yes, on our way through the cold and snowy expanse of Hickory, NC, my mom and I stopped to get lunch and do a little shopping...I found my way into a gutted Circuit City that still had a few PC games lying around for amazing discounted prices.

By the time all was said and done, I'd spent about $50, but I got three games for my trouble. First, I got Jade Empire: Special Edition, which I've been wanting to play since it came out (BioWare Fangirl Alert) but since I don't have an Xbox and only recently got a less crappy computer, I had to wait this long to get my hands on it...next up was Spore, which I've again wanted since it came out, DRM issues be damned. It's effing SPORE. And it's addictive as hell. Next I grabbed a copy of Unreal Tournament 3, so I can kick the ass of *cough* I mean, play nicely with one of my friends and we can have lots of fun doing all sorts of fun things.

And as if that wasn't cool enough, when I got back home last night I discovered my super cheap $25 copy of Persona 4 and accompanying booklet had arrived in my absence! So now I can do my very own Endurance Run. Yay!

So yeah. Between all of this and the games I've already got (still working my way through the tedious slog that is NOLF 2 and of course there's WoW to consider) I'm going to be gaming for a looong awhile...just the way I like it! Because, of course, the only thing better than good video games are CHEAP good video games. <3

Give up WoW for KOTOR "3"?

Possibly. I'm not a great fan of WoW at the moment, and I worship the ground the folks at Bioware program on, so it's probably going to happen. But I'd kind of like the game to get here first before I make up my mind about buying yet another MMO. Since when did gamers become social creatures, anyway?

What I'm looking forward to in '09

I am definitely looking forward to a lot of games coming out this year, but I'd have to say the two games that take the top spots are Dragon Age: Origins and Mass Effect 2. Of course, I fully expect ME2 to get pushed back since it's already slated for "late 2009", but a girl can dream, can't she? Riddick: Dark Athena also looks completely amazing. Hoping my PC can actually run that when it comes out. And of course we musn't forget about The Sims 3...
