Best of 2013

We're contractually obligated to do this, right?

And, yeah, The Last of Us is not on my list. I played the first few hours of it and wasn't really enjoying the game part of it. I love Uncharted, so...I don't know. I DON'T HAVE TO EXPLAIN MYSELF TO YOU!

Seriously though, I did end up watching a no commentary play through of the game on YouTube recently though, because I was interested in the story part. I did enjoy watching it, but putting it on my list after that doesn't feel right.

So, here we go. Feel free to yell at me in the comments.

List items

  • A Link to the Past is my favorite console game of all time. I have lost count on the number of times I have played through it on various platforms. When Nintendo announced they were making a sequel, I was worried. Don't fuck with a good thing, you know? But, they nailed it. A Link Between Worlds is the perfect balance of familiarity, nostalgia, innovation, and challenge. While still feeling like that old game, I was constantly stopped in my tracks to really think about how to tackle dungeon puzzles. Not only did they make a worthy sequel to one of the greatest games of all time, they also shook the foundation of what makes a Zelda game, which is promising for the future of the franchise. My only complaint about the game is that it ended. For I was suddenly no longer 11 years old anymore.

  • I love Assassin's Creed. Yes, even the first one. I even liked III, though I was disappointed. Black Flag gets things back on track by delivering a fun experience at almost every turn. Edward Kenway's attitude towards this whole war between the Assassins and Templars likely mirrors many players' own attitude at this point in the franchise (especially after III), and that results in a rejuvenating effect for the entire series.

  • Animal Crossing is an interesting franchise for me. I could not care less about the console versions, but I will dump hundreds of hours into the handheld ones apparently. For several months this year, New Leaf was a daily ritual. Like many others, I find it difficult explain why I love this game. Admittedly, there's not much "game" there to begin with, but...wait...I haven't played since it changed to Winter. I...I need to go catch new bugs and fish for Blathers. See ya.

  • For a while there, I thought Tomb Raider was trying to set the record for reboots. But, they got it this time. I thoroughly enjoyed the story as well as exploring the island. I do wish there were more of those tomb puzzles. The gruesome death animations did seem really out of place, but it didn't take away from the game to me.

  • It was nigh impossible for this game to live up to the hype, but the backlash in the months that followed its release was ridiculous to me. Nine months later, I'm still thinking about that ending. I had a great time all the way through.

  • I'm not a big FPS guy. I've enjoyed Battlefield since 2 though. And I've had a blast with BF4...when it works. This game would easily be higher on my list if not for the fact that in the month since its launch (on PS4), it has been various levels of broken the entire time. The game itself is great, but when you're dumped back to the PS4 dashboard every few matches, you can't forgive that.

  • I couldn't do it.

  • Is GTA5 a watershed moment in the history of video games? No. But, you know what? It's pretty great. The level of detail in that world is astounding. Sometimes I would just stop and slowly spin the camera around in amazement. The choice to go with three protagonists was clearly the right choice as it freed Rockstar up in terms of giving mission types that made sense depending on the character. The heist missions were incredibly fun. Like many others have said, I just wish there were more of them.

  • Divekick will always be synonymous with PAX East 2013 for me. Discovering the pure fun and surprising depth of this game with a group of friends (and thousands of strangers) was an experience to be remembered. I did not end up playing it as much as I thought I would when it came out, but I'm hoping to rectify that once it launches on PS4.

  • This entry is a consolidation of all three Picross releases on the eShop this year. I love me some Picross. Whatever variation you want to throw at me, I will play it. And each entry of this series had some unique takes on the concept of picross.

This is a good list. Tomb Raider was what Uncharted 3 should have been. Also, it rightfully ignores The Last of Us, which has somehow succeeded in convincing most people that it isn't trash.

It's always funny to see people late to a party to call something that people love overrated. I hope that you were actually able to enjoy one of the best games of all time, and are just trolling poorly.

I actually posted a review pointing out how terrible it is shortly after it released. I'm not late to the party, man. Just wait, in time people will realize how hilariously bad TLOU is, much like how most non-maniacs are now suddenly aware that FF7 is godawful too. Pretty sure it's a very similar case, too, actually, with both games blinding people with cutscene quality.

Looks like a solid list but Last of Us isn't on it which means it's completely and objectively false. If you keep working on yourself maybe next year will be better.

Great list. I am super stoked to play A Link Between Worlds, as I have nothing but fond memories of the original.

I enjoyed Brothers but I've heard some people in the past say they didn't like certain games because they were "emotionally manipulative" and then I hear them like Brothers and I'm like...wah?

@tothenines: Because that's how lists work here.

A clunky work around that I've started to do is to make an unordered list and add each game 10-1, putting the number in the description. Again, it's super clunky and awkward, but if you are a stickler for descending order it might be worth it.

I picked up the game boy version Picross through Club Nintendo. It's the first time I've played one of these and I'm kind of addicted. I'm intrigued by your inclusion of Picross e.

Picross with colour?! I--J'UH--can't even---

That's interesting about Uncharted/Last of Us... I hate Uncharted but love The Last Of Us. I do think the first few hours of The Last Of Us are the most like gunless Uncharted and then it opens up. Also why won't they release another 3D Picross??
