Child's Play!

No silly goose, not Chucky.. charity.

Donate
Donate

I just got through listening to a podcast where they were graciously promoting the Child's Play charity. For those of you who may not know, this is a charity founded by Mike Krahulik and Jerry Holkins(or Gabe & Tycho) of Penny Arcade, that helps bring games and other items to children's hospitals. Ever since its inception in 2003, donations have increased each year and hopefully this year will be no different.

This will be my second year participating and I couldn't be happier being a part of it. These kids need something to take their minds off of their unfortunate circumstances. I remember when I was in a hospital for months with a pituitary tumor (Cushing's syndrome) and I would ask the nurses if I could have a chance to play the N64 or PS2. Any chance I could get to play something, I took that opportunity because it was a fun outlet. I even asked my mom to bring some games from home for whenever I had a system in my room. I don't think I realized at the time how much I appreciated having that outlet because it helped make rough times a bit easier.

It is really easy to donate. Just head over to the Child's Play charity website and choose a hospital to donate to. Each hospital has a wishlist with items to choose from. Games are as little as 10 bucks so don't worry if you can't afford much. Every little bit counts. Books, toys, and movies are also available so there are plenty of choices.

Again, any kind of support you can give is greatly appreciated. Tell your family and friends. Thanks for reading! Any questions, leave 'em.

Also, feel free to mention any other charitable organizations here that you support. =D

Do work, son(s)!

EDIT: Here are a list of community fundraiser events.

This is a great thing you are doing MasterSplinter. My wife and I donate money every month to St. Judes Children's Hospital.

Man i'm glad you made this blog, i was thinking of making a sticky about it later this week. I've been donating to Child's Play since the day it started mainly because its a charity i feel i can believe in. As a gaming enthusiast i find the fact i can bring a little happiness to younger gamers in hospitals somewhat appealing, i guess it might be selfish, but i feel better by donating to this charity because i think it gives video games some better press in the public eye.

Honestly if you have even a small bit of extra money, £5 even, its worth donating to Child's Play. Sure we might be having a global credit crunch but i don't think anyone is on the verge of poverty from it that they cannot afford to donate a little something to kids in hospitals around the world.

God damn i love Penny Arcade.....i will be banning anyone who does not make a donation :P

I am so donating soon, this such a wonderful cause! It really goes to show that the mainstream media's stereotype that all gamers are evil delinquents is just so untrue.

I think i'll sticky it for a few days, its a charity i think a lot of gamers should be involved in. Especially at this time when the economy is down the drain. There are kids in hospital this christmas who may not be able to play games, we need to get that changed!

I must agree this is an awesome charity! This will be my second year donating as well, I am just not really sure what or how I want to buy though so I have not just yet. I am also hoping someone sells the t-shirt again as now that I have money and a job picking up that would be awesome.

Nice. It seems allot of gaming websites are doing charity events now. Sarcastic Gamer with their Extra Life gaming marathon is the one that jumps to mind - those guys rule.

If I was older and had more money, I'd donate all I can but sadly, I just don't got the money now, although I really want to.

Yeah I heard of that a while ago, but back then I was thinking about other charities. The anime(youtube) community has donated their fair share of donations as well as others. I'm pleased how generous the guys from Penny Arcade as well as the contributions the community was affected from. I will glady contribute my share.

Awesome, man.  I'm gonna buy Spiderman: Friend of Foe for the Oakland Children's Hospital, which is close to me.  I remember having to stay in the hospital off and on every year as a kid for asthma attacks and being so bored.  They had an arts and crafts room, but that sucked.

I heard about this charity on G4 and I think its a great cause. This holiday season I will donate some money to this charity.
I really want to do something like this in my community where I can bring maybe my xbox or wii to a childrens hospital and play some video games with them.

I am pretty sure they did last year and I believe they do this year as well. I am not 100% sure though.

This is the first year I've had a job and I'm definitely going to give something to the children's hospital in Arizona. I'll just buy myself one less game this year so that those kids can play some games. Do you guys think those kids would like Pokemon Diamond or Viva Pinata: TIP more?

I definitely want to donate to this, as someone who grew up with 2 back muscle conditions,i underwent 3 surgeries in a span of 5 years, and countless visits to Children's Hospital in Vancouver.I know first hand how hard it is to go through that,so I want to do my best to make that experience that much better for kids in Children's Hospitals.Awesome of you for posting this Master Splinter!!!!!!!!!

I posted a blog about this too. but i donated using  Cheapass Gamer's raffle, they do a raffle every year where every 5 dollars you donate, you get an entry to win great stuff like a 500 dollar amazon gift-card, a X-box 360 prize pack with 50 games, and a bunch of other stuff. I donate anyway, but why not also try and  win some stuff while you're at it.

I've known about Child's Play for a few years now but this is the first year I've actually been able to donate something.  Feels good to give to little gamers something to ease their stay in hospitals.
