I finished the story last night. I've spent more time in Brotherhood- about 24 hours- than I did doing everything in AC2 (feathers, everything) and I've only completed about 35% of it. If you concentrate ONLY on story, you can probably do it in 10-12 hours, I'd imagine. I spent a good amount of time on the shops, Borgia towers, and leveling up my assassins, but I've hardly touched the contracts, Da Vinci missions, shrines, etc. There is easily another 20-30 or more hours worth of stuff for me to do now.
College, the military, whatever. Any honest profession or path in life after high school is totally honorable. I'm anti-war, too (honestly, who isn't?), but I'm pro-serving your country if your conscience is telling you to.
Just understand, man, that it's going to be hard on them. Not just because of their beliefs, but because it's hard for any parent to send their kid into the military. There's always that chance of them not coming back, even if there's no war on. Don't minimize their feelings, and there's a chance they'll take yours seriously, too.
It's "repetitive," but if you enjoy what it is you're doing over and over again (climbing stuff and stabbing dudes, basically), you'll love it. And it helps you appreciate the later games even more. Almost any decent game is worth $15, so if you're low on cash, the first AC is a good buy.
Just don't play Brotherhood unless you've played AC2 first!
There's no specific place to find stuff. Keep opening chests and chasing down the robbers (or whatever they're called... the random guys who run away from you). I found a shrunken head last night in a chest. Grab a map from one of the art dealers, do some chest looting, and I'm sure you'll eventually find what you're looking for.
