This will probably get buried but something that I think should be clarified in this article/Austin's remarks on the podcast is that the armies from The Old Worlds didn't go away with Age of Sigmar. All the existing races and models were given free rule updates (even new models since have free rules). There are a few cases where lesser played factions are likely not going to be supported going forward, like Tomb Kings or Brettonia, but if you already had an army of these factions you can still play with them. They still have rules, they just won't be expanded on. When Austin and Vinny were talking about this on last week's podcast Vinny had asked if the new world ending meant that the army you built up is useless and unplayable now, and Austin said yes. I think it should be noticed that this isn't the case.
Riot continues to be a scourge on the gaming industry. I'll miss you Rising Thunder.
Not that I think Riot Games is perfect in any way, but how are they a scourge on the gaming industry, in your opinion?
My thoughts exactly. They've focused tons of resources into making sure one game is as competitive and balanced as they can make it. Sure you can argue their success in that matter but...the scourge of the gaming industry? Not Activison or EA who pumps out sequels and closes beloved studios? Not Ubisoft or Capcom, who often times put out games that are barely playable at launch?
People have a weird hate on for a company that, if they so chose, they can completely ignore the one game that company produces and it will effect their other favorites in no way.
mazik765 I'll be more overt riot isn't the one people should be hating here. They really shouldn't hate anyone as this is just business but all companies are always trying to make more money and grow you can never have plenty. Growth can't stop - that is a way to get no new stuff. Radient could have said no to the deal but they didn't so if you have to hate someone hate them. The new game could certainly be a lol fighter and the easiest way for them to do that would be to buy Radient who have done work on it. Change the IP and you turn from one game to another so it would qualify as a new game. In the business world games are about IP not mechanics. Speculation yes but it isn't really as baseless as you make out.
It's equally as viable that they will have them create an entirely new IP. We have just as much evidence for that, so I'm simply saying it's really early for people to get angry about a game that doesn't exist. And if anyone has the capital to put into a new IP, Riot is one of the few up there.
You're right that the industry is dominated by successful IPs and Riot has 1. It seems more likely to me that they will try to expand with newly successful IPs, similar to how Blizzard has functioned over the years.
Again all this is speculation but I still think the doom and gloom is early, especially with a company that has no track record for this type of thing. If it were Activision or EA I'd get the hate; they have a long history of buying studios just to pump out maps packs or sequels. But it's simply to early to tell if Riot will take this same approach or actually invest int he company to make some interesting new properties.
Ok guys, I understand not everyone loves League of Legends but the wild, baseless speculation that Riot is doing this merely to absorb employees, or create a LoL fighter, despite the fact that the statement clearly says they are continuing to work on Stoneearth and a new game, is more than a little silly.
Let's be honest, Riot doesn't need to buy a company for employees. And League of Legends is making them plenty of money already, I doubt they need to saturate their characters in a fighting game. If you want to hate Riot, that's your prerogative. But don't jump to conclusions that have literally zero evidence.
@homelessbird: Dan seems to be a regular dude who has just had life work out in his favor a few too many times. I know a few people like that personally and they're naive about the weirdest shit like sour cream, how the law works, etc.
No kidding, I stopped listening to the Bombcast like a year and a half ago when Drew was talking about his trip to North Korea and Dan kept insisting he could find a McDonalds to grab a snack at. I understand he's partially joking, but these ignorant statements happen often enough that I'm worried I'm gonna wake up one day and hear he's dead because he put a fork in a socket when someone told him he couldn't.
