Dealing with Cheaters and other Wiki issues

Effective immediately, anyone found to be exploiting the WIki by either plagiarizing others' work or otherwise abusing their live edit privileges to get points will have their points reset to zero.  In addition, these people will be banned from making any further submissions or edits to the site.  If you've copy & pasted something from another website into the Wiki, it would be best if you went back and editied that stuff out before you get caught by one of us.  Remember, we want original material in your own words, and no watermarked images from other sites in galleries.

Thankfully, there are a few users who have taken it upon themselves to investigate the submission history of users that are on the top of the leaderboards.  If you come across suspected plagiarism, PM me and I'll make sure the appropriate action is taken.   Make sure you include plenty of links and supporting information.

On a related note, please do not submit thousands of screenshots into a gallery.  I'm not naming names here, but there are a few people that are submitting hundreds and even thousands of screenshots for games that were only taken a second or two apart from one another.  This realliy ruins screenshot galleries, and it makes looking for a specific shot like looking for a needle in a stack of needles.

New Feature: Community Rating Tool!

I'm pleased to announce that there is a new feature on the forums, a sort of Crowd Moderation/Reporting Tool.  The way it works is that the moderators are notified when a post gets a certain number of negative ratings.  That number is subject to change, but for now I'll reveal that the number is not very high at all.  Once  a post gets it's required number of negative ratings, a moderator will be notified to look at it and then he will decide what action to take.

This is an aspect of the site that is vitally important for the community to get involved in, simply because there are so many forums and so few moderators.  When there is a bad post...tell us!  Reasons to negatively rate a post could be inappropriate images, trolling, spamming, attacking other users, or any other situation where you think a moderator needs to be involved.

To rate, click on the - or + icon in the top right hand corner of the post.

In pictures, here's how the system works:

Troll starts acting up

Once the specified number of negative ratings is reached, a Moderator

checks out the thread and handles business.

Modcat is watching you!

Everyone goes back to business as usual!

Giant Bomb...serious business!

Moderation Queue Update

Through a combination of hard work and the power of technology, we've reduced the queue to around 7,500 submissions.  The turnaround time is just about 36 hours at this point.  We expect to meet our goal of a 24 hour turnaround time by the end of the week!

Edit:  To clear up a little confusion, this number does not include image submissions, those are in a separate queue.  Again, thanks to the awesome power of technology, the image crowd moderation tool has reduced the number of images waiting to be approved from over 20,000 down to almost  zero.  Go forth and submit more images!

The Image Moderation Tool:  Here's what we see.

Moderating Emegency Averted!

The staff has just rolled out a new script that automatically approves certain duplicate entries.  This will show as an Approval on your submissions queue, but you will not get points for these submissions if someone already had entered them before you.  In English - the moderating queue just got reduced in size by about 50%.

Moderating Submissions...

A bunch of us are hard at work on moderating your submissions.  In the last two hours, the number of subs in the que has actually gone up by about 20.

I need a drink.  I'm thinking Bombay Sapphire & Tonic?

Forum Moderation at Giant Bomb - The Beginning

I think I speak for all of the forum moderators when I say...THANK YOU!  You guys have been great.  Of course there were a couple of trolls and bad apples, that was to be expected, but to be honest, I thought there would be far more than there actually are.  Everybody has been really cool.  It's also refreshing to see that you all are actually trying to post in the appropriate forums, which I know isn't easy considering there isn't exactly an easy to use forum index at this stage of the game.

Just so you guys know, the moderation tools are quite limited at this point but the staff is hard at work on improving them.  Currently, we can only move posts between the major forums.  That means if it belongs anywhere other than General,Off Topic, Bug Reports, or Editing/Tools there is pretty much nothing we can do about it short of deleting it and having you repost your thread in the appropriate section.  Thankfully, Giant Bombers are pretty savvy and have been trying hard to keep their posts in the right section.  If you need a post deleted or moved, feel free to PM a moderator and we will work with you to get your posts in the place they need to be.

As far as moderation goes and what the rules are here at Giant Bomb, that's an ongoing discussion amongst the staff.  There is no Code of Conduct yet. I did write up a brief post that has since been slightly modified by some of the other mods as a general guide as to what you can and can't post here.  In short, just be cool to one another.  Try to treat others with respect, and don't act like a douche.  We're not here to micromanage every little thing you post, but on the other hand, if you get really out of line then one of us is going to drop the hammer on you.  This does not mean you are going to get banned for one borderline post.  It's more likely that a moderator will edit your post and then PM you about it.  Beyond the obvious, try not to get into Hard-R or X-Rated territory with your posts.  Discussions about illegal drugs, sex, warez, porn, nearly naked pics, racist comments, extreme flaming or personal attacks, and similar topics or posts will be edited or deleted.  Just use a little common sense and you'll be fine.  If you aren't sure if something is OK to post or not, ask a moderator for clarification.

As most of you know, there is no Report function for anything here yet.  That is something else that's being worked on, and a lot of you have been really helpful with PM'ing one of the community team to deal with issues as they arise.  Here is the list again, just in case you didn't see it elsewhere:

Forum Moderators

There are an additional fifteen Wiki Moderators that are strictly concentrating on approving your thousands of Wiki submissions.  Wiki Moderators do not have forum moderation powers at this time, but that may change in the future once things settle down.  They don't have a special avatar yet either, that is something else that is being worked on.  These are the people you need to contact for emergency edits to wiki, when an image of a hamburger slips into the Solid Snake gallery.  In case you see them posting on the forums and wonder who they are, here is the list:

Wiki-Only Moderators

These lists are of course subject to change as things on the site evolve, but that's the list as it stands for now.

Anyway, that's about all I have to say for now!   Just wanted to say hello and get some things out there to keep everybody in the loop.  The moderators are here to help you have a better experience at Giant Bomb, and if there is anything I can do to help you, please shoot me a PM.  In the meantime, I welcome your comments, criticisms and suggestions.
