ngl- the pitchfork component of this latest round of layoffs is the one that hits closest to home for me. i have complicated feelings about p4k, but it does kind of feel like a leg is getting kicked out.

there was a good On the Media ep recently if folks are looking for supplemental info.

sorry to hear about your gaming ennui!

(and thus marks my first opportunity to use that word since finally metabolizing its meaning)

it's different for everyone, but i find the best medicine for me in those circumstances is to try new things. if a break isn't in the cards, maybe try a completely new genre out? maybe something critically acclaimed but not your usual cup of tea. that shift in perspective usually is good for me.

yeah, similar to @therealturk i'm not reliably consuming gb video anymore. i shoot the bull with you chuckleheads here and on the discord, and catch bits and pieces of the pods on their respective RSS feeds, but that's the extent of it.

which is all to say i'm probably not the best judge of the current video product.

however i do remember hearing various staff throughout the years describe the prep that went into quicklooks, and i think if you compare content from the pre-COVID era to now, that's the big delineation (for me). i understand why basically everything is shooting from the hip/live to tape these days (it's probably the shrewd decision), but the caliber of the commentary has changed for me. part of that might be just due to staff churn, but i do think there's a tangible, meaningful difference when more structure is imposed and there's a less of a 'streamer reacts' vibe. i gravitate towards outlets that focus on curation and expressing their interest in a thing more than just coverage of 'what's the current thing.' quicklooks used to strike a pretty good balance there for me- but everyone's mileage will vary, though.

so far there isn't a hot-button brand new release i'm actively anticipating, but i'd say i'm very likely to give these a spin:

tlou2 remaster - as a big fan i'm stoked to see the cut content and other supplemental material

like a dragon: infinite wealth - i've just started yakuza: like a dragon, but so far i'm enjoying it more than yakuza: zero

homeworld 3 - pure curiosity

ff7 rebirth - wasn't head-over-heels for remake, but i'm curious to see how this one compares

space marine 2 - enjoyed the 1st, here's hoping the 2nd is equally as good

elden ring dlc - as a bit of a elden ring skeptic (relative to the fervor; i enjoyed it but it isn't in my top 3 From games) i'm curious about this one more for conversation than expecting a mind-blowing experience

yep, same as OP- NES to SNES to N64 (childhood/teens), then mostly PC until later years.

strangely enough i don't have much nostalgia or attachment to those consoles, but i'm also not very nostalgic in general. Switch was my first Nintendo console since N64, so it's been interesting to have a catch-up.

i'll be honest- i'm a beneficiary of someone else's prime sub (i get the shipping perks but none of the other services), so it doesn't affect me since i don't have streaming privileges in the first place.

however once my meal ticket expires, i likely wouldn't pay for prime. just doesn't seem worth it anymore.

twitch is already kind of an ads-addled hellscape- wouldn't be surprised if it gets worse.

yeah, this is a quandary that- at the risk of sounding like an noncommittal coward- i can see from both sides (withholding reporting in an attempt to minimize impact vs. reporting details...goes without saying i don't think anyone should be reposting the stolen material itself).

at the end of the day, outlets will have their own code of ethics, so they should be clear and consistent about those and everyone should focus on their own individual comportment. newsworthiness is not a universal standard, so whatever happens- it's on editorial or individuals to figure out if they can sleep at night.

speaking for myself- i would probably want to work for an outlet that didn't feel obligated to try and make lemonade out of others' lemons of misfortune. and yes- i know that's 'The News,' but counterpoint- we're talking about an entertainment company that was extorted and exposed product/business plans- not exactly the Pentagon Papers. it's not quite ambulance chasing, but it's in the ballpark (for me). maybe paparazzi is a better analogy.

i answered 'none of the above' since i've never sought narrative 'solutions' from fandom. but authorial intent is pretty critical to how i digest stories- so i kinda don't give a flying fig what the fans have to contribute to a story.

in fact it can be a bit of a turn off- every now and then you hear about shows that rely on intrigue 'logging on' and surveying reddit, boards, fan communities to see what people are postulating to better duck them.

that- conceptually- drives me up the wall. and is fairly off-topic to be fair ; )

@chamurai: i mean, it's all about execution right?

it didn't resonate as deeply with me as with others, but i think few would argue something like Red Dead Redemption 2 didn't justify its existence as a prequel.
