For my favourite console controller I'd pick the Xbox 360 controller. Slips into my hands very nicely, is aesthetically appealing (as long as you don't look directly at the area where the bumper and triggers were), wireless, has a button that can turn a console on/off (PS3 has this as well but I don't have it), and is very comfortable. My only complaint as many others has raised, is the bloody spongy d-pad. You'd think they'd take a issue on that. I hear they've addressed this with a new green controller but that's for a limited time, which makes no sense to me.

Runner up is the Dualshock 2. I'm not sure why, but I like it. Only problem is it's too darn small so my hands get pretty sweaty after a while. Even if the controller felt comfortable to you, eventually the built up of moisture will get you. I'm not sure if this has to do with big or small hands.

I think the N64 controller was pretty good, as long as you entirely ignore the D-pad and hold the controller by the middle.

The 360 is fun, and I have probably played it the most out of all 3. You're right about the RROD. I'm on my 3rd 360, because the 1st replacement they sent me didn't show picture right out of the box. They "made it up to me" with a free copy of PGR3. Overall though, I love my 360.

The Wii is fun... when you're drunk. No problems with it, but the only games I played by myself were Zelda and the SSBB campaign. But if you're drunk and you have some friends around, the Wii is probably the greatest thing ever.

My PC plays older games like Battlefield 1942, Counterstrike, and Starcraft. I just can't afford to keep upgrading it to play the new games smoothly.

I mean, if you can afford it, PC gaming is great but consoles are pretty reliable gaming on a budget, with the exception of PS3. With the money people spend on PS3 you could buy a top-of-the-line graphics card that would last you 5 years, and have a bigger selection of games, and better graphics.

So although you make some good points like the Wii lacks good games, the 360 breaks down, and the PS3 is too expensive, I gotta stick with my consoles because PC gaming at it's finest requires a new graphics card every few years, and a new processor every few years. I can't afford that, but if you can, it's a lot of fun."
I'm on the same page as Commando is. I've got a pretty decent computer but it won't budge on anything that's of next-gen quality. I get lots of people who are big on PC gaming telling me to get a better hardware. Easier than said than done, but it gets expensive to stay the top dog with frequent advancements in gaming design including uber graphics, higher polygon counts and special effects. Consoles are good for people who have a limited budget, but that doesn't rule out that even richer people enjoy playing on consoles. I know this rich guy who has a uber computer but he plays his Xbox 360 because it's fun and all his friends play on it.

It looks like a PS2 is in order initially from all the responses. Out of curiousity, how is the backwards-compatiblity of the PS3? I hear that it is not so hot though.

I'm not very clear on that myself, but I think a few versions have it and some do not. If I recall correctly the cheaper version generally do not have backwards-compatibility.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PS3#Retail_configurations

Nevermind, the newer versions do not have them so it seems. The older ones that do have it aren't in production anymore.

I really wished Sony didn't fiddle around so much with the PS3 by having 6 different versions of them...

I don't know what's all the bitching about. Then again, I've never played the first Bioshock. Gotta do that first.

No, I don't hate Epic. They're fine in my opinion. Gears of War 2 had a buggy multiplayer but I never really play that competitively so it doesn't bug me out.

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare turned on Veteran mode. I can complete Mile High Club on Veteran within half an hour of trying but the rest are just ridiculous.

Shit, there's actually somebody out there that owns a Sega Saturn aside from me.

For getting back and starting off in the gaming world, I agree with most of the posters here. Get a PS2. It's compatible with the games on the previous console so there's a huge library at your expense, most of which are dirt cheap at this point (including the console itself). There's tons of great titles on the PS2 so it'll get you started. If you want to move onto the next-gen gaming it'll depend on what you want to experience as all three systems have their differences, it does boil down to the games but secondary functions and the price tags do count.

The Wii version (graphically) actually looks fine. Why? Because it's got a different art style and direction than the Xbox 360 one. It's not like it's carbon copying the models from that console and just dumbing it down 5 times more than needed, they look like two different games if you know what I mean.
