Welcome to the next gen.  Watch out for Wii owners and for gods sake don't buy a motion control system from a man in exchange for magic beans, no good can come of it

I'm in a similar situation. I got my first truly current-gen console, a lovely 360 Elite 120GB, this week. I bought the GTA + Episodes bundle for €40 and with 2100 MS Points I got Super Meat Boy, Scott Pilgrim vs The World and Dead Rising: Case Zero. I can sincerely recommend you get them all. Great, great games.

Also, tagging this topic for future reference :P

@michaelfinnie: What kind of games do you like?

check out the Mass Effects, Alan Wake and ...oh my god all the multiplatform titles. You have 4+ years of great stuff to catch up on^^

Posted by Dany

Mass Effect 1 and 2, Red Dead Redemption, Assassins Creed

Do you have an HDTV?

Edited by MrKlorox

A little known title called Red Dead Redemption springs to mind.

Also there's the Bethesda RPGs. Same for Bioware.

Sure none are 360 exclusives, but they're hundreds, even thousands of hours possible of fun combined.

buy Saint's Row 2 for countless hours of mindless fun

Make sure to check out all the great arcade games on Xbox Live (you don't need a gold account to buy them).
Here are a couple that are completely worth your money.

  • Scott pilgrim
  • super meat boy
  • geometry wars (1 + 2)
  • UNO
  • Penny arcade (episodes 1 + 2)
  • Comic Jumper
  • Limbo
  • Shadow Complex
  • Castle Crashers
  • Braid
  • etc...
I could keep going for a while.

I can not recommend any games more than Mass Effect 1 and Mass Effect 2. Those games are great (and super cheap!). Tales of Vesperia is another good one if you're into RPGs.

A suggestion that I didn't steal from someone else would have to be Batman: Arkham Asylum. It's a great game, even if you aren't a huge Batman fan. But if you are... then it's even better!
Edited by Branthog

If you're impressed by that, your mind is going to be blown when you get your hands on some games that are actually good. :)

Go to some place like Amazon and start checking out all the $20 "platinum hits" or whatever they're called and have at it. You'll get a big selection of stuff. Check them against reviews on GiantBomb to get a good idea if they're "must experience" titles or not. Have at it. Almost all the great titles that are over a year old can be found for around $20 or so brand new, right now.

Besides the games you mentioned, stuff like Halo, Gears of War, and Mass Effect are a must-have. Also, just because no one else has mentioned it in here yet I'm gonna throw Fable II out there, it's not the perfect game but I think it's worth playing.

I'm surprised I'm the first person to bring this up, but you should have gotten a PS3 instead. Wait, let me back up. Before you decided on what console you wanted, did you think of which games you want to play the most, and what features you want in a console?

Splosion Man is a fun little ditty

yes i did. all the games i really want to play are usually released on 360 and PS3. I got the xbox because graphic videos ive seen on youtube with splitscreen comparison look better. My parents arent rich >.> so i had to get a normal one and not a wifi-included version. Its 100x better than the ps2 i had to use for several years. yes... this is my FIRST and ONLY time ive ever had a next gen console... aka 6th generation of xbox360,ps3,or wii

Well, there's a lot to pick up...what're your favorite games for the PS2, I guess is the first question.

Go out and get the Mass Effect games ASAP!

Posted by Jolt92

Batman Arkham Asylum
Mass Effect 1 / 2
Halo 3
Red Dead Redemption
GTA IV
Borderlands
Left 4 Dead 1/2
Viva Piñata

Check those out, you should be able to get them for a decent price and, welcome to the next generation!

@michaelfinnie: No, I mean PS2. You said you've been playing one for the last six years, you've got to like some of the games from it. I'm asking which ones you liked so I can know what kinds of games you've played recently, and can move onward to suggest either new experiences or evolutions of old ideas. For example, someone who's played a lot of Sly Cooper might still enjoy Enslaved: Odyssey to the West, but they've played something like it before that is (to most people) probably better. However, seeing the evolution of games like GTA might also be a big drive. So what PS2 games did you like?

I'm just gonna say: Mass Effect 2 is under 20 bucks new.

Have you ever wanted to ride on a jet while it's taking off?
Have you ever wanted to jump into that jet, yank out the pilot and then fly it into a group of fuel tanks?

Have you ever wanted to completely destroy a 3rd world country just for shits and giggles?

Play Just Cause 2.

There are plenty of great titles on all 3 systems. You'd do well to just investigate games that suit your taste and then read reviews and general community feedback on them. There's nothing wrong with the Wii. I don't own a Kinect or Move however.

If you like racing games at all, buy Forza 3 without hesitating.  Banjo Nuts and Bolts is also one of the best 360 games in general so check that out.

nice man, it must be great to get an update. get some call of duty: black ops and other games.

This guy makes some good points.  Still, for the love of god stick with your 360 and never buy a Wii though.
