Thanks everyone for the responses!  Sounds like I should definitely check it out.

Just wondering if the two are comparable at all.  Any thoughts?

Definitely still worth picking up.  Just make sure you have some MS points as well for the map packs.

Is onslaught mode worth the 400 points?  My buddies and I loved Horde from Gears 2, but didn't enjoy Firefight in Halo:  Reach quite as much.  How does it compare to those?

I like that the maps are a bit smaller because there's more opportunity to encounter enemies and also that there seem to be fewer perches for snipers to just sit and pick you off from.

Also, getting the jump on a jeep full of dudes when you're packing the flamethrower is pretty fun.

I was in the same spot as you (got a used copy of the game for Christmas).  The VIP is definitely worth it in terms of number of maps.  If you find you're getting into the multiplayer portion game, I'd buy the Vietnam  DLC as well.

That said, I have found the Vietnam games to be better populated than the 'vanilla' BC2 games of late.

@Mystyr_E: I'm in the same boat you are.  I tried it out the other evening and enjoyed the maps, but got my ass handed to me.

I recently discovered that the Defiant achievements are attainable using custom maps as long as you're using the "official" Bungie version of the gametypes (do a search in the bungie.net forums for detailed instructions).  This sure makes getting that 150 points simple!
