I think Castlevania 64 (for all its other flaws) handled this rather well: the shopkeeper in Dracula's Castle is a devil. Of course he doesn't care that you're trying to save the world. In fact, if you spend more than 30,000 gold, he tries to steal your soul.

@zombiepie: I can see that price being "reasonable". SNES copies of FF6 still go for $60+, IIRC.

My initial thoughts is no, slotting mods is more similar to equipping items in extra equipment slots than crafting.

And I debated breaking it up into object-limited and time-limited, but I decided against it under the belief the end result (player making tough decisions about what to craft) was similar enough.

@luchalma: Endless mode. Maybe there's a Hard mode after you beat it on Normal? Not sure. It feels like an almost sandbox-ish roguelike that's just a few tweaks away from being something challenging. Whether it would be interesting, though... not sure.

@bhizzy: It was a decent way to pass the time for a day or two. But the moment I got distracted by another game, I nearly forgot about it completely and have little motivation to go back to it. I would pay $5, maybe $7 tops for it. Feels like it has more style than substance.

I'd guess about 80-90% of MOBA matches are decided within the first 20% of the match almost universally. Granted so are many other things.

Perhaps! But this just feels much, much worse than those. Let me elaborate:

  • You win an OMDU Sabotage match by having more Rift Points than your opponent. You lose Rift Points whenever a minion reaches your Rift.
  • Players have the fewest traps set up on the 1st wave.
  • The number of traps quickly outscales the number of minions, so the farther into the match you are, the easier it is to prevent any minions from reaching your Rift.
  • Card strength does not scale with waves; aka an Ogre All-Stars card spawns the same number of ogres whether it's the 1st or the Final Wave.
  • As a result, victory often depends upon who can randomly draw the best cards during the 1st Wave. Losing 1 point during the 1st Wave was often enough to doom you for the rest of the match.

That's not even getting into issues with Sabotage's Sudden Death (infinite minions spawned, team that has a minion reach their Rift first loses), where it's possible for certain heroes to indefinitely knockback/crowd-control the minions so they never, ever reach the Rift. (They said they modified it this patch so minions had resistance to knockback/CC in Sudden Death now, but I'm not confident it worked.)

@clagnaught: I can definitely understand getting tired of games all about existential teenage angst as you mature out of that stage of your life. I fell out of love with JRPGs in college for a similar reason (among others). However, I do find myself still able to enjoy those kinds games while wishing they had a mature voice of reason in the cast more frequently than they do.

That said, I'm probably never going to stop playing games just because of the ages of the characters. Pokemon is still mechanically entertaining after all these years even with the 12-year old protagonist and coming of age plot.

Agreed. I suspect the actual problem here is "I don't like how these characters are written" instead of "I'm too old to relate to them". And Persona 5 definitely has bumps in the storytelling. The trope of "best friend who can't date a girl to save his life" is worn out, the casual leering of female teenagers can be off-putting (especially if you have daughters approaching that age), and the jokes about the two gay revelers commit the cardinal sin of being stereotypical and unfunny.

My girlfriend has been playing it a hell of a lot since Saturday. She'd been looking for a new Fantasy Life style game for a while and this has seemed to hit for her.

Just out of interest, how do you know you're 3/4ths of the way through?

Technically, I don't. I'm estimating by the story beats. The first 3 goals are collecting 3 crystals; once you do that, a big storybeat drops & you have to revisit each region to assemble a special key to power up the crystals to fight Chaos itself. Assuming the "revisit each region" part indicates the final part of the main plot, I estimated I'm 3/4ths through the plot.

Granted, the actual game itself, if you decide to squeeze every ounce of completionism out of it, seems to be much longer. I'm at Oasis Level 20 out of 30, I'm missing at least 19 residents (only have 41 so far), and only 3 of my shops have reached top-tier. Judging by the in-game achievements, there also seems to be several bonus bosses, an endless dungeon, and even rare monsters I've never seen.
