Games completed in 2016

A list of games I'll be updating as I complete things throughout the year

List items

  • Completed: 02/01/2016

With Uncharted 4 looming around the corner, and a fresh copy of the Nathan Drake Collection for the PS4, I'll be playing through the first three entries in this fantastic series from Naughty Dog. I started on Jan 1st and finished on the 2nd. The length of Uncharted actually really caught me off guard. I always remembered the game being epic and it felt much longer then it actually is in earnest (6 hours 30 minutes). Perhaps having played the original atleast 5 or 6 times I was at a decided advantage, but the actual quality of the game and the way it plays (for the most part) still holds up incredibly well when you consider the game is now nearly 10 years old!

Another dive into the Nathan Drake collection leads me to - I would hazard a guess - my 5th playthrough of Uncharted 2. My personal favourite of the original trilogy holds up well and the polish of the remaster only helps the game shine brighter then it did during its original release. For a game from 2009, Among Thieves still holds up great and the improvements over the first entry are all the more clear having played them both in such quick succession. The further I get into the Nathan Drake collection - and with only the third entry still to play, Uncharted 4's release can't come soon enough in my opinion.

Assassins Creed Syndicate was certainly a step in the right direction for the series, however it all might be too much, too little, too late if sale's figures are to be believed. Though I enjoyed this entry alot more then other recent outings for the franchise, there were also some issues that Ubisoft really need to address if they want to continue the series. The controls really feel in need of an overhaul, and if you're going to have two main characters, have their missions intersect along the way. The final mission gave a test of this but its execution was poor. If Assassins Creed to learn a thing or two from the GTA mission structure and provide a bit more freedom in the framework - the series could absolutely fly upwards like that eagle that's always on my vantage points.

The third and final stop on the Nathan Drake collection tour helps highlight that for three last gen games - they sure still pack a punch. Uncharted as a series is more ambitious then a large selection of current gen games and shows why Naughty Dog are one of the best in the business when it comes to big budget blockbuster games. All be it for some janky checkpoint saves which left me in a state of 'where the heck am i?' - Uncharted 3 reaches the highest heights of the series and leaves me ridiculously hyped for Uncharted 4 which we all know is going to blow all three of the previous entries out of the water!

In between bouts of action courtesy of Assassins Creed and the Nathan Drake collection - the charming little title Persona 4 Dancing All Night kept me busy with its bonkers story mode and addictive gameplay. As a huge fan of Persona 3 and 4, I had been aware of this title for quite some time, and with a sale in place it was time to get in on the action. Dancing All Night is certainly 'for the fans' but if you're into the series, you'll appreciate the amount of small nods to fans of the series and the incredible remixes of all your favourite tracks from Persona 4. The fact that the songs have already been drummed into your skull from countless hours with the original game only aids in the ease of access when dancing to the songs. The gameplay is engaging and hard mode is exactly that - hard! Trying to beat the songs can be a real challenge - but the addictivness of the title keeps you coming back for more. I'd love to see a version done with the Persona 3 cast thrown in - for now...its back to freedance mode!

At first, I wasn't too into the Evil Within, but it's a game that gains momentum and interest the more you play. Oddly enough I felt the game reminded me of The Last of us and Dead Space in terms of gameplay. The exploration and level structure were well thought out and taking things cautiously was rewarded - until you got a rocket launcher.

  • Completed 21/02/2016

Picking up an unfinished replay with about half the story to go on new game plus. The Last of Us is still phenomenal and is easily one of the greatest stories in video games. Such great characters and interactions. Probably one of my favourite games of all time. Can't wait to see what Naughty Dog plan on doing after Uncharted 4!

  • Completed 25/03/2016

At release Bulletstorm was one of my favourite shooters in the genre. I felt the action was fast-paced and the dialogue was a good laugh. A replay shows me the action has held up well and sure, some of the jokes still get a laugh out of me, but I'm surprised how poorly this game has aged. I would still be open to the idea of a sequel but I very much doubt it'll ever happen.

  • Completed 25/03/2016

Shorter then I remember - or perhaps just quicker and easier on a replay, Splinter Cell Conviction represents the catalyst for change in the series. Gone are the somewhat clunky controls, and instead we have a fluid shooter that can feel great when performing takedowns and breaches on the fly.

  • Completed 30/03/2016

The latest, and in my opinion strongest of all the splinter cell games. Again a bit shorter then I remember - but the amount of freedom and fluid gameplay really helps make this game still hold up incredibly well today. I would love to see another outing for this version of Sam Fisher and I really don't think Michael Ironside's needs to mumble his way back into the voice actors studio - i'm fine with what Eric Johnson brought to the table!

  • Completed 09/04/2016

God of War Ascension is very cinematic, it relishes in presenting visually astounding levels but at times it's to the detrement of the action on screen. The camera pans back making Kratos about as big as a pin head as you attempt to continue to combo your way through your enemies. This replay highlighted how limited the combat in God of War is when compared to other character action games. I'm still a fan of the series and the Norse mythology rumours for an up and coming sequel is interesting but I really feel the game needs to bring it in terms of innovative new combat and gameplay options.

  • Completed: 25/04/2016

Visually this game is still beautiful and presents one of the best looking open world environments to this day. I really like the infamous franchise, and Second Son was a great entry and my first game on the PS4! I went for a replay but explored the bad karma side of things and was impressed with how different the choices and ending was. The gameplay still holds up well and I'd love to see a new entry into the franchise in the future.

  • Completed 28/05/2016

The best exclusive on PS4, from the best developer on PS4. Naughty Dog make jaw dropping games time and again, from the uncharted series to the last of us, everything just has so much polish and Uncharted 4 is the shinest example of a game from the studio so far. Everything about this game is 10/10. The voice acting, the mo-cap, the natural banter, the effects, the climbing, the gunplay. It's all just perfect. I'm sad to see Nathan Drake go, but I hope it means we get another blockbuster franchise from the team that once upon a time brought us Crash Bandicoot. 10/10

  • Completed 05/07/2016

Wow...I found this game to be one of the most atmospheric i've played in a long time. It really sucked me in with its visuals and its incredbile character development and story progression. You actually cared and in the end you were left feeling somewhat heart broken with the outcome. A short game, but I never once felt short changed. 10/10

  • Completed: 10/07/2016

A fun little game with an engaging story and interesting turn based combat. There wasn't much in the way of difficult encounters but it felt challenging enough to play through to completion. The adventures of my character 'Ramen' and his 'street justice' attitude were fun and didn't over stay their welcome. 8/10

  • Completed: 10/07/2016

Having never played a borderlands game, I found this series incredibly accessible and it could very well be my favourite Tell Tale game to date. The music intro's to each episode alone were so beautiful and creative, not to mention the rest of the game being so awesome. The characters were all amazing and the voice work throughout was top notch. We need more games with a strong sense of comedy. This was the perfect combination of comedy, action and drama. 10/10

  • Completed 24/09/2016

A replay that highlighted just how many men Lara Croft murdered in this outing. I still enjoyed the game, but ultimately Lara cut through an entire island's worth of men like a hot knife through butter which is a huge disconnect to her 'Oh God!' moment from her first kill at the start. 6/10

  • Completed 9/10/2016

Sadly this my go down as my biggest disappointment of 2016. When it's good, Deus Ex Mankind Divided is really good. But a woefully short main story and a game that ends just as it's getting going is incredibly bad practice - especially for a game that has been in development as long as this has. 6/10

With episodes becoming shorter with each new release it really seemed that sadly telltale's batman was more of an obligation then a commitment to make an exciting batman adventure. I enjoyed juggling Bruce Wayne's social life more so then the laboured and poorly thoughout combat and investigations of The Bat. Where as tale's from the borderlands had interesting and lenghty action sequences, batman's really were hit and miss. 7/10

Sadly, this game will never truely be completed because no more episodes are coming out and it's a horrible notion to consider. I picked up the game knowing it was incomplete but at the price it was, I was curious enough to dive in anyway. The game was really interesting and I'm annoyed that it'll never be complete cause it was just getting going when it was all cut to short. 8/10
