My Five Games of the Year

I didn't get around to playing many games this year so I thought I would keep the list short and focus on those that mattered to me.

List items

  • I have never had as strong of an emotional reaction to a game as I have to Gone Home. The final concluding moments left me in a ball of tears and was the perfect complete gaming experience for me

  • A beautiful game, and one that packs a punch at the end. This game isn't about the written story it tells, it is about the the unwritten one it creates through its mechanics that culminate in one climactic moment. At least that was how it played out for me.

  • For a level of pure fun I would go to Risk of Rain, a game that expertly toed the line between being difficult and being fun. You could experience both ends of the stick over the course of two runs and that is what makes the game so much fun. Also, there is nothing like the sensation of having the drops go your way and start snowballing and you just mowing enemies down.

  • No game left me smirking to myself, this year, as much as The Stanley Parable. What an incredibly clever game that held continued surprises through the multiple runs I had in the game.

  • Rogue Legacy was the perfect game for me when I just had 20 minutes of playtime and wanted to feel like I made some progress in a game. Tight controls, a sense of humor and just fun all around.
