MjHealy: Best of 2010

Since I am young and foolhardy, it is hard to always get the games you want with a limited budget of money. Even if I probably played more new games this year than last year, there are still some mighty gaps on my gaming pallet. Ignoring that, however, one should note that 2010 was packed to the gills with tasty releases, on both the physical and downloadable ends. Thinking back over the year, here is my list of the games tht just made me smile throughout the year.

List items

  • It may seem obvious, sure, but there is a reason why Mass Effect 2 is on everyone's lips. BioWare took Mass Effect, a terrific yet flawed game, and turned it into a masterpiece. I have never felt so entrenched in a game world. The first time I walked through the new districts of the Citadel was one of my gaming moments of the year. Game of the year, no question.

  • I love me a good western. When details of this game circled the internet, lets just say I was pretty excited. Red Dead Redemption ticked all the boxes of what I wanted from "A Fistful of Dollars: The Video Game". Rockstar have once again created characters that fit oh so well into the beatifully created worlds.

  • About as close as video games come to being art, minus the pretentiousness. LIMBO creates such an atomsphere, such an experience. From an art standpoint, LIMBO's gray, industrial world is such a pleasure to behold and play. It may not be the longest of games, but LIMBO certianaly leaves a lasting impression.

  • Hey I quite like Zelda. Blood and guts ain't half bad either. Not a bad little combination if I do say so myself.

  • Heavy Rain may not exactly live up to all of it's goals, but hell if I did not find it satisfying. Words such as "cinematic" may be thrown around in a clichéd manner but it would certainly be the word I would to use to describe some of this game's incredible set-pieces.

  • Good God! There is an awful lot of explosions in this game... and I love it. Sure, there is some terrific/awful voice acting as well as some annoying upgrade mechanics, Just Cause 2 take #4 as it is just enjoyment.

  • What a terrific first 15 hours this game fed to me. More Fallout 3, but a bit sunnier. It was not until the end that this game began to slide... hard. Ignoring the bugs and other annoying things, New Vegas is still very good. Not quite at Fallout 3 good, but good nonetheless.

  • This game is so fucking weird. Like, seriously, what the hell is actually going on? With it's combination of incredible madness as well as an approachable combat system, Bayonetta surprised me.

  • The thrill of the chase. There is something so satisfying with smashing your head against a level a hundred times and finally break through on the 101st attempt. SMB is about skill; you can progress until you play better. SMB has some airtight controls and a great test of anyone's patience, which is a compliment.

  • Shit blowing. Dudes getting shot. What better way is there to open a top 10 list? No, you're right, there isn't.
