Underrated Games from Past and Current Generations

I  plan on making blogs about some of these games as to why these games are so good, yet their rarely mentioned within the gaming community, but this list will serve for what might be a preview to a series of blogs tentatively called Where's the Praise?  Here is a list of games that come off of my mind as underrated games and write down quick comments about each game. If I can get my blog going, write about each game one or two at a time. Enjoy! Though let me worn you, the number of past generation games outweighs the number of current generation games, so my list isn't even in older and newer games.

List items

  • When you think of games from the late and great Ensemble Studios, you think of Age of Empires II: Age of Kings or even Halo Wars for 360 users. While Age of Mythology isn't as well remembered, I think its just as good as Age of Kings.

  • Honestly, I've never had more fun with a racing game than this. Seriously this was kind of Star Wars racing game taking elements from F-Zero, but becomes a good game on its own.

  • The remake from 2004 to clarify, not the first installment. This was a great game, but this rarely got as much attention as other PC titles in 2004 (Half-Life 2, World of Warcraft, Sims 2, etc.).

  • Why does everyone I know not remember the World Land games? Specifically 3, that game was the SHIT for the GB Color!

  • I may compare Wario Land 3 to 4 in a versus blog if people want me to do that. Both rock!

  • This might be one of the weirdest games I've ever played, but damn is it fun. What other game lets you shoot sharks into the ground to eat enemy soldiers!?

  • Some may not think of this game as underrated, but I do considering that when we think of titles to get for the PS3, most people would point to games like God of War 3, LittleBigPlanet, and Uncharted 2. THis doesn't seem to get as much attention.

  • The GBA had a great lineup of turn based strategy games. I feel this isn't as well renowned as Advance Wars or Fire Emblem, but it should.

  • I'll probably cover the whole NCAA Football franchise, but I'll definitely refer to what I think is the best iteration of the franchise

  • The greatest Simpsons video game ever made was a GTA knockoff, but a good one at that. There should be a sequel to this, but I don't think it will ever happen it.

  • I like to think of this as Age of Empires meets Advance Wars. It wasa turn based strategy that had a combat system similar to Advance Wars, but transitioned Age of Kings' features in TBS form.

  • Why did Donkey Konga get more attention for the Bongo Drums instead of this. This was way funner to play in my eyes!

  • This seems to be the least known Total War game, aside from maybe Napoleon, but its definitely far from being the worst.

  • I'm putting this in because whenever people think of games from the Burnout series, they think of 3 as the pinnacle of the franchise. Revenge was the only Burnout game I've played and I think it deserves some recognition.

  • Probably the most obvious choice out of all of games on this list, but its still something more PS3 owners should get.

  • Gonna play more of this, but this seems pretty underrated in both the Giantbomb community and the whole sport gaming community.

So, I like the idea for this list, but I just don't agree with many of the games. Tools of Destruction isn't especially worthy of praise; if anything, A Crack In Time would be a better fit. I disagree that Age of Mythology is even close to as good as Age of Kings, especially when one considers that its campaign was pretty heinously below par. If you've played Star Wars Ep 1 Racer recently, you'll probably see that it doesn't hold up so well; I tried it about a month ago and I did not have a good time, though I remember liking the game as a kid. I definitely preferred Donkey Konga to Jungle Beat, but the song list could very well send me the other way now that I'm not 14.

Not having played Revenge, let me just say that whatever people say is the best Burnout game is almost definitely the best Burnout game as they're all pretty much exactly the same (with the exception of Paradise.)

Also, while I definitely prefer Hit & Run to any other Simpsons game, there's another Simpsons game that people prefer, right? Even then, Hit & Run wasn't necessarily special, it was just rather fun to play.
