The thought puzzle, Ship of Theseus, asks if an object that has had all of its original components replaced remains the same object.

Yeah, when I was 19, my track coach's house burned down...he went back in to save his puppy and he died. He was only like 24 at teh time. His sister was a senior in high school at the time, so a year behind me. It was a big loss for the whole community because we all knew the family is our small town and him being a coach. [ I haven't thought about that in years, it still very sad.]

I never understood the appeal of Power Rangers and other tween programming. Once, I was over the age of 12, teen books, teen movies or teen-tv was boring. Once I was in 6th grade I was reading Stephen King novels and only wanting to see adult movies...not even consciously...if they asked what movies I wasted to see it was Dirty Harry, The Dead Zone, or Year of the Dragon or something like that. Every Sunday from 1979 to 1999 I watched 60-Minutes...that just how my mind functioned.

The meanings of ratings have changed a lot, and will change a lot. Movie rating over time have changed meaning...and not for the better. And I expect the same will happen for games. In ten years games that were T rated will be M for sure...they will probably as some sort fo crazy T-17 rating thus making M-Rating a scarlet letter to never have.

Rating are as much of a tool as they are a barrier. People can use them well or poorly, and in some cases people will use them well in one way and poorly in another. My sister is afraid to allow her 12 year old son to play CoD, but will let him play Destiny. Hey, I agree Destiny is seemingly a less violent seeming game even to me...but is there REALLY a substantive difference that holds up to thoughtful analytical scrutiny?

Thanks everybody! You were all very helpful. Who knows, maybe I will have a game to distribute in a year. This is more of a passion project, rather than something to make money, so I would give it away for free. I just want librarians to laugh, but I'm sure it would appeal to anyone in a public service job.

I will tell people if I get started or find something that will work as soon as I can.

Years ago, there were games or tools like "RPG Maker" or "Fighter Maker". They allowed people to make their own games and while simplistic they utilized only one program to do all the tasks involved in game making. I'll admit I have no looked into Unity or any of the other cross-platform game creation systems. However, I assume that are a bit harder in some respects and maybe a bit more flexible in other respects.

SO, I guess my question is what can you make, and what would be one of the easier tools that is between Free and $30. I think I'm looking for something that might be able to do something that looks like Sims 2 level of graphics...so not necessarily 3D.

It just seems to me that making a game should be a tool that is more "out there" in front of people's faces, but maybe it is and i just don't know it. Is there a game engine that allows someone to make "Paper's Please" with "Game Developer Tycoon"combined?

I see all this hot garbage coming out on Steam and I wonder how these seemly stupid people are making games. If a bunch of charlatans trying to steal people's money on Steam can make a game....well I could make something.

Just so you know I want to make a "Librarian" game, sort of "Paper's Please" meets "Game Developer Tycoon". You have to buy books, hire staff, deal with patrons complaining, boost circulation, hire more staff....build your library up. I'm not worried about someone stealing the idea....I'm sure some smart librarian has made this game. However, I DO want to make it...I have this vision.

So, if there an engine that could make a "Game Developer Tycoon" style games but could maybe incorporate some mechanics from Paper's Please?

This is Vegas. Not because it was going to be good, but because it was going to be cheezie. It was a really sleazy game and uncouth in conception, but there is really nothing wrong with that....it would be been interesting, Sometimes weird stupid games should exist. There needs to a a John Waters attitude of gaming too, games that are irreverent to the medium itself should exist.

This is vegas would have been trashy....because THAT IS VEGAS. This Is Vegas would be have sexist, reprehensible and dumb but that is okay if that was the point.

Besides the occasional poorly done teen-lingo (who uses "hella" unironically?) I thought it was pretty well written. At its worst, it's still better than a David Cage game (and I love his games). The acting is mostly on point too. I'll just ignore the poor lip-syncing, because the rest is the game is gorgeous.

I really like Max. She has a slight awkwardness to her speech that makes her a believable high school character and weirdly charming.

Agreed. I liked it; I think the script was pretty good. The only thing I think I was asinine as calling her Caulfield....come on that was a bit too obvious...even Max herself would vomit at that literary allusion. Also, why are all these seniors 18 and 19? Where these kids all held back two years? Bright high school seniors are 17, and some just before they graduate might be 18. If they really felt this "had to be safe" just have the school be a liberal arts college....or better yet grow some backbone and tell the ESRB and whiney suits that high school kids aged 17 smoke pot, swear,... get pregnant, and...is that 'mousey' religious girl sleeping with the teacher..

I love this game. I think this is better than Walking Dead. I easily see this as being well worth the money to play.

@sethphotopoulos: I find it hard to believe you can buy a NEW 360 with six games in North Carolina for $99. Are you getting this from Craigslist....I mean murder-for-hire.com? I'm not looking to buy a used system of unknown functionality out of the back of a van...I'd rather not die to get a 360.

I just went on gamestop's website. I also didn't think you meant new. If you mean new then the cheapest one I can find is about $180.

True...but I thought the 4GB ones are worth a damn because they don't have enough storage to run things like Halo because they lack the space for the game to install, add DLC, etc?

@monkeyking1969: I'd imagine their primary goal is to switch as many people as possible to the new console.

....

If they make the 360 too appealing, it would just drive more folks to put off "upgrading" and just stick with the old console.

Probably, but it would be nice to get my hands on a new unit (THAT FUNCTIONS) without spending tons of money. Used 360s are hit or miss, you might get a broken one form disreputable person...or it might be fine. With the used systems being time-bombs people are forced to buy new systems and that is hard on the wallet.
