It's THAN, not THEN!

When I'm on the internet, I usually try not to be a "grammar Nazi," as the kids like to call them. But there's one thing, that no matter how many times I see, it ALWAYS makes me angry. And what is this, you ask?

Well, it's when people use the word "then" when they really mean "than." For example:

Incorrect: I like this game more then that other game.
Correct: I like this game more than that other game.

Incorrect: There are more dogs then cats.
Correct: There are more dogs than cats.

Then is used in the context of time. I went to the park, and then I saw some dogs. You turn the car on, then you drive.

Than is used when comparing things. Pizza is better than broccoli. I'd rather eat broccoli (which I hate) than read people miss use the word then.

So, my question is, WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE?! Did you not pay ANY attention during English class in school? Do you just not care? Just typing fast, push the wrong button, and you don't take the time to make sure you used the correct word?

And I CAN'T take it. All it does is make the writer look like an idiot for not knowing the proper grammar, or for not caring.

Now, I'm not going try and say that I use proper grammar all the time, but I don't do anything as glaringly wrong as that (at least I don't think I do).

Anyway, does anyone else get this angry over stupid little things on the internet like this?

The "then" and "than" is commonly not used properly in the English speaking world. People always screw it up and it pretty much got to the point where it really doesn't matter too much to any ordinary person. Grammar is a bitch to learn.

Now, if you have good grammar and type properly but spell a common word improperly (like they're spelling it as if it was pronounced that way instead of how it is spelt), that actually pisses me off.

I see plenty of mistakes on forums, and no doubt make many myself. If someone has a question then I will answer it as best I can, none of my answers are peer (pear/pier/pare???) reviewed and most are rushed. If I screw up with my spelling and get my point across then what matters is that I got my point across, and hopefully it helped. That doesn't mean that I don't notice mistakes, and some really get on my nerves, particularly the ones I made, but I just read the post again as if it were correct and forget about it.

I dunno whether it is as blindingly in your face in the states, but here in England, all the cool kids seem to take regular words and use them completely out of context or with a completely different meaning. That is also something I find very annoying.

If people would just take a moment to read their messages before they post them, this kind of thing wouldn't be so rampant.

I generally only get pissed off at people's bad internet grammar when it's clear they don't know any better. But aren't foreign. I mean if your first language is clearly english, but you still make major fuckups like you're and your, I don't know how you even managed to turn the computer on. I want those people purged from the internet.

But if you're just learning english, or you're obviously trying your best, I don't care. Screw up all you want.

But having horrible english out of pure ignorance of your own language is inexcusable. These people spend a shit-load of time online, yet in all the reading they do, they don't notice the glaring mistakes in their own writing?
I just don't know how these people even pass school.

@iam3green: I don't think it has anything to do with education. I learned everything I know about the English language by going to school. And I'm only 25. So either the public school system has gone downhill exponentially since I graduated, or technology like the internet is giving people greater leeway to use bad grammar.

Both can correct, it's just that I could care less doesn't play well in type. I've always interpreted "I could care less" sarcastically - as in "I care very very little but I suppose it's mathematically possible for me to care less". "
I was actually thinking about this today and reached the same conclusion.

Seems like the kind of thing that you really need to emphasize when saying it. But unfortunately, I know people who say it literally, not sarcastically.

Than/then and you're/your: these don't bother me too much, but there is one word that really drives me crazy.

I go into a blinding rage when someone types "prolly" instead of "probably". "Prolly" is not a word, and if you use it, fuck you.

You started three sentences with a conjunction, failed to use proper punctuation many times, had incorrect sentence structure throughout and failed to capitalize 'English'. Tut, tut.

I do that on forums a lot, I know it's technically incorrect but it just sometimes helps to break up what I'm saying so that it's not one big wall of text, or written like an essay.
I do like correct grammar and all that but I think some people can definitely take it a bit too far.

One that does really bother me is "irregardless".  I once had a job interview with a company and the guy said it at least five times.. Felt like my eyeballs were going to explode.  But I didn't want to correct him.

My biggest pet peeves are people who mix up their, there, their or your and you're, use "good" and "well" in incorrect situations, use effect/affect incorrectly, or people who misuse then/than.

Edit: Oh! Can't forget its and it's, who's and whose.

I was browsing the deli at my local supermarket when I came across this tag for cookies:

Better then homemade!

I had the same thoughts about it you did. Then, on another label, I saw:

Better than homemade!

Phew! Sweet grammatical relief!... Then I saw

Better tham homemade!

It can be annoying, but at the same time often I'm at work and doing other things at the same time when I am typing so my grammar isn't going to be perfect. Also, sometimes I'm on late at night and make tons of grammar mistakes.

I don't correct other peoples grammar unless they're friends and I'm joking with them.
I often typo or fat finger a lot.
You will often see any post I make get edited at least once because I am not happy with my own grammar, haha

Other people, though, can type how they want; as long as I can understand what they are saying I won't care. I only get offended when the grammar mistakes are intentional- and not in a funny way, but rather in a "I speel worng cus I bez kewl!!!!11!!"

Ya, otherwise I don't bother people with it. I have no real pet peeves with spelling for other people; I'm harsher with myself.
