It's THAN, not THEN!

When I'm on the internet, I usually try not to be a "grammar Nazi," as the kids like to call them. But there's one thing, that no matter how many times I see, it ALWAYS makes me angry. And what is this, you ask?

Well, it's when people use the word "then" when they really mean "than." For example:

Incorrect: I like this game more then that other game.
Correct: I like this game more than that other game.

Incorrect: There are more dogs then cats.
Correct: There are more dogs than cats.

Then is used in the context of time. I went to the park, and then I saw some dogs. You turn the car on, then you drive.

Than is used when comparing things. Pizza is better than broccoli. I'd rather eat broccoli (which I hate) than read people miss use the word then.

So, my question is, WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE?! Did you not pay ANY attention during English class in school? Do you just not care? Just typing fast, push the wrong button, and you don't take the time to make sure you used the correct word?

And I CAN'T take it. All it does is make the writer look like an idiot for not knowing the proper grammar, or for not caring.

Now, I'm not going try and say that I use proper grammar all the time, but I don't do anything as glaringly wrong as that (at least I don't think I do).

Anyway, does anyone else get this angry over stupid little things on the internet like this?

I'm typing this sentence at 80 words per minute and I am not going to make any mistakes. I'm going to tell you that I did not pay any attention in English class because I much prefer things like numbers in Math class than all the words in English.

There are few things less important then people using then instead of than. Unless you have some sort of compulsive disorder, you should really get your priorities straight. It can't be healthy to be get so angry at a different letter being used.

Be sure to take into account that not everyone's first language is English, either. I'm not saying you do, but I see a lot of posters making this assumption.

I don't get bothered by a person's writing ability as long as I'm able to understand what they're saying.

Edit: A lot of missed opportunities by the previous posters above to jokingly misuse then/than! :(

People actually get them mixed up? Guess I've had the luck of never having to see it before.
I mean, that kinda thing doesn't really get to me but it sounds like a really basic thing to mess up. I suppose I'm a native english speaker though.

What annoys me is when people say "I could care less". That means you do care, because you could care less than you currently do. They should say "I couldn't care less", because that means you don't care, because you can't care any less than you do. The then & than thing often comes from english not being their first language, but more often than not, it's Americans who say "I could care less".

I'm not sure if you're intentionally making his post incorrect or not, but just in case, "than" was indeed correct.

Yeah, and also the words to and too. Then there's you're and your. What else?... Mixing up words is never good. Anything that slows me down to re-read a terribly written sentence isn't good. I'm not perfect myself, but I often if always catch when there's a problem in a sentence.

This is only tangentially related, but I hate when people think Frankenstein was the monster. It wasn't. Frankenstein is the doctor; the monster has no name, and this is a major plot point. GET IT RIGHT!

Well, you could make an argument that in the book, the monster views Doc Frankenstein as a father, the monster probably would have gone by the name Frankenstein, so that's not really that bad of a mistake.

However, in most movies, the monster isn't intelligent enough to think of much beyond "fire bad," so that argument is moot in that case.

This is why I always call the monster Robert De Niro.

Edit: @mutha3: I think you've gotten to the real core of the problem. Now we should just call them both monster.

People who don't know how to use plurals.

One of the things a family member of mine (who's over 40 years old, mind you) does that bugs the living shit out of me though is that instead of typing the word "and" it's always ~n~.  I mean really?  It's the same fucking amount of characters.  In fact, you have to hold down the shift to get the tilde.  So there's no "it's shorter to type that way."
Other such crap that's not any shorter to type but is done because it's "cool" bugs me too, especially from middle-aged folk who should be past worrying about fitting in with their kids.

Not really, though. Nobody calls the monster "Frankenstein." They usually call him "get that fucking thing out of our village, it's burning our house down." Also, no, you can't call him Frankenstein based on his daddy, since the Doctor disowns the shit out of him as soon as he realizes what a terror he created.

I hate it when people say 'supposably'.
I really, truly hate it when people are too dumb to tell the difference between 'no' and 'know'. I've seen that way too frequently on YouTube.
Nobody seems to know when to use the word 'they're', as it's almost always replaced with 'their', or vice versa.
People seem to always use apostrophes in the wrong places.
While we're on a similar subject, I hate things like 'lol', 'lmao', and just generally all emoticons. If it's not worth it to type it all out, it's not worth saying.

Both can correct, it's just that I could care less doesn't play well in type.
I've always interpreted "I could care less" sarcastically - as in "I care very very little but I suppose it's mathematically possible for me to care less".
As far as "then" and "than", I know their definitions fine, but I'm sure that's one one of those typos that I often miss when I'm re-reading my posts.

...but at the end of the day, I use these boards for entertainment so my attentiion too grammer and spelling comes and gos at times. :)

Screw people who call you a grammar natzi. I can understand simple mistakes made on a qick comment. That's just being in a hurry. But if the person is being a d-bag and continues making the same mistakes on comment after comment, I am all for calling that person the idiot they are.
