Dead Rising 2's New Save System Will Probably Still Tick Me Off

Kotaku link about Dead Rising 2's save system.

I am severely disappointed.  The only changes made are that you can now have multiple save files and there are now more places to save your game.   Still no auto save, or temporary save.

The news of how the save system works in DR2 makes it and instant "try before buy" instead of a "Day 1" purchase for me.  When I played Dead Rising, I didn't get pissed off because I'd die and lose an hour's progress, that was fine.  I could cope with that.  It was "I need to go to bed, I have to work in the morning" type of progress loss that pissed me off.  If I wasn't in an area with an accessible bathroom to save, I had to walk the long way across the mall just to get to one of the save points.   It made me feel like I was wasting my time.  So I could only play Dead Rising when I had at least 2 - 3 hours to spare, which is hard to come by for a working adult with a family to take care of.

The least they could have done was implement a "temporary save" type functionality that allows people to quit out of the game when they need to without losing progress; The temp save would disappear when it was reloaded so you can't use it as a "quick save".

I know for a lot of you, this is a non-issue and think nothing of having to replay parts of the game is no big deal.  I agree with you except that it's not the game that beat me, it's the save system that beat me.  The challenge should come from the zombie horde not the system used to save a game.

I would love to play Dead Rising 2 but until I know exactly how easy it will be to save and quit if I have to, without losing all the game time I put in, I am staying the hell away.

For me it was a combination of the two, and it being like that in the first made the sequel a "try before buy" the day it was announced, regardless of whether they changed it or not.

S'funny, and made that much more frustrating for me that if this was any other game, made by any other company it would get absolutely skewered because of this. Yet for some reason this bad design decision is totally cool when it comes to Dead Rising.

I hear ya man and all my friends had the same issue.  I mean that first boss fight or whatever, you had to learn how to use the weapons but the AI would kill you pretty easily then you find out the game had no checkpoint system.  I lost 45 minutes and I had a couple friends lose hours as they was just checking out the mall and ect ect.  There is no excuse for that crap.

And I hate timed missions that aren't racing.  The game is forcing me to play in a rush instead of letting me look around and enjoy.  They simply do not care to IMPROVE their game.  I hope the second game tanks badly so it will force them to listen to the issues.

That sounds ideal, really.
It prevents people from saving too much, simply so they can re-load and try a part over and over, and it lets people save quickly so they can turn off the game and get back to thier real-lives, lol

of course, I don't think any of this is in Dead Rising 2 (at least it wasn't in Case Zero) so, let's just hope it's in Dead Rising 3...

The save system is really the only thing preventing me from buying DR2 "day one", as i returned the first one because of said save system. It feels extremely old, and not very modern.

I'm willing to give  this game a shot though, seeing as i have been having a ton of fun with case zero.

While the system does have some issues but the point is that you need to plan what you'll do within the next few hours of game time before returning to the safe areas.

I found it fairly easy to manage my time in the game once I leveled up abit.  Removing the save system would change the game a bit too much in my opinion but maybe they should have made the save system as part of a Hard core mode.

Personally I don't understand these critiques at all.

I admit that I'm really experienced with the first game and know my way around  better than most, but the only area in Dead Rising where you aren't five minutes away from a save is the tunnels underneath the mall. If they're adding even more of these locations plus multiple slots I don't know how you can single out this franchise for having an "inconvenient" system. How do you play Rock Band when you can't save in the middle of a song?

The difference between a game like Dead Rising and Rock Band is that Rock Band doesn't have any real "progress" that means more than unlocking new songs.  Even still, if you have to quit in the middle of a song, it's five minutes.  It doesn't take much time at all to play through a song on Rock Band.  Playing through a section on Dead Rising and making real progress can take an hour or more.  When you only have a couple of hours a day, maybe, to even think about playing a game, it isn't fun to replay whole two hour sessions because I can't seem to find my way to a save point.  Not to mention, until you level up a lot, just running through the hordes quickly to try and get to a save point is not easy either.  It's also not reasonable really to run to a save point every time you do something because it eats away at valuable game time and you can end up missing missions just running to save points (I did).

I simply don't find it fun.

I agree. There needs to be an understanding that not everyone has unlimited time to play games, or even that not everyone can just set aside time in their day that's devoted solely to playing games. I think the temporary save system is a perfect way to fix that, but it seems that they're being stubborn and refusing to implement something so simple, just to accommodate those of us who no longer have set hours that can be devoted solely to the game.
