Divergent Opinions: When I Don't Agree with the Giant Bomb Staff

It's bound to happen, especially when reviews are so totally opinion based on this site rather than the analytical, clinical style of GameSpot of old. That is, I find myself totally disagreeing with the Giant Bomb crew's assessment of certain games from time to time. I tend to be de acuerdo with them more often than not, and that's why I like them and trust their judgment. But every now and then I so totally disagree that it bothers me. So here's a nice little list of the games that have stood out to me the most.

Dead Space 2
Brad raved about this, and Jeff respects it a lot and spoke of it as if it's serious Game of the Year material that Ryan definitely needs to play before those discussions happen. I just played it, being a pretty big fan of the first game, and was screaming at it and ready to rip it to pieces by half way through. It's frustrating and cheaply difficult, it's badly paced and so identical to the first game that I was actually pretty mad at it. The storytelling was better, but the rest was just such a waste. I might even go back to my review and change it from four stars to three. Maybe I'm in the severe minority here, but I was very disappointed by this game. The average Amazon reviews are lower than the first game's though, so maybe not. Brad's statement of "You could have told me it was just more Dead Space..." is annoying, since I actually got sick of the first one before the credits rolled anyway due to poor pacing, and the second game is worse. Ugh.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii
I was catching up on old Bombcasts, and Ryan specifically was talking this game up as being a really fun romp. I LOVE me some Mario Bros. and was excited to check it out, and I freaking hate it! It's one of the laziest games Nintendo has made for the Wii this side of Wii Play and Mario Kart Wii. The only good things were done better in the 2006 DS game! It's frustrating, has bad controls, and is really boring. Whatever. I hate it. I may beat it eventually just to spite it, but UGGGGGGHHHH... Super Mario Galaxy 2, in the words of IGN (I think) makes this game look like some sort of fan-made flash game by comparison. It's creative, consistently fun, challenging but fair, and marvelous in every way. I totally agree with Ryan on that one.

Rhythm Heaven
Jeff loves him some Rhythm Heaven, and I love the WarioWare games and other random assortment-style games. I thought it would be a perfect fit. This game, however, is terrible. The controls are unforgivably bad and the objectives are inane. Bleaugh. Hey, but I agree with Jeff on one thing: Picross 3D is pretty flippin' sweet.

Bionic Commando Rearmed
The NES Bionic Commando game is one of my very, very favorite games of all time. It's fun, challenging, and varied. It also has kick-butt music. I was so stoked for this game when I saw the announcement trailer that I nearly wet myself. Then I played it...and it's really dumb. I don't like the remixed music, I don't like the controls at all, I don't like the overall feel of the game or the strange, oversaturated graphics. There's little I like about this game, actually. It feels like a shoddy cash-in. Jeff seemed to love it, though, and it's well liked. Maybe I'm crazy.

Rock Band 3
Let me preface this by saying that overall I think Rock Band 3 is a fantastic improvement over the past iterations and has a ton of great new features. Okay? I'm not crazy here. My trouble is that it's just not mind-blowing in any way. The progression stats and all that are fantastic, but the way things were moved around sometimes makes it hard to access. It's hard to tell where my songs actually came from (Rock Band 2, DLC, Rock Band 3, etc.) and switching around instruments causes you to change to a horrifically ugly default character instead of the one you had saved. My biggest complaint, though, is the poorly implemented keyboard controller. It receives praise from nearly every editorial site I've seen, and I can only chalk that up to the lack of expertise or experience of each of these sources when it comes to playing piano. I've played since I was seven and am a fairly well accomplished pianist in classical, rock, jazz, and many other styles. I can play really, really hard stuff very well. So when I find the keys nigh-on unplayable due to the nit-picky and poorly laid-out nature of Pro Keys, it's a bad sign. Playing piano allows for improvisation and trills, and is dependent on feel, but the nature of the note setup is the requirement of absolute rigid exactness. Sometimes I can't even figure out what I'm messing up. The worst, though, is the notation. Everything seems shifted over one note farther than it actually is, so I rarely read it right even after getting all the keys achievements and practicing hard at it. Would it kill them to allow an option to put the note names above the note line so you at least know where your hands are? Geez...at least playing guitar is still loads of fun.

I'm probably expecting way too much and being irrational here, but c'mon! I should love to play the keys in this game. It seems like it was made for me!

Fable II
They openly admit there's lots of problems, but they still love the heck out of this game. I don't know why. I played a bunch of it and it feels like utter garbage. Nothing is right in this poorly-made game, at least in my opinion. Whatever. Play it if you like. Crazy people.

Metroid: Other M
Of all the...this is another example of Brad being crazy I guess. I like the guy a lot and all but...this game is FREAKING TERRIBLE. I love, love, LOVE the Metroid series and have played every single game multiple times, and I even like Ninja Gaiden too. This game is so bad my roommate and I sat in utter shock for the longest time trying to figure out if this was just some kind of practical joke. Thumbs down, everyone! Somebody please shoot me...

Darksiders
This game was an alright copycat of God of War and Zelda. It was kinda slow-paced and boring a lot of times, and enemies were sometimes weirdly cheap in a way that the gameplay wasn't built for. Actually, the controls were straight-up pretty bad. Jeff seemed to like it a lot though. Not that he thought it was a masterpiece, because it wasn't. Whatever. Good on him I guess. I'd put it more at the three stars range, personally.

Alan Wake
Here's a first for this list: a time when I felt the editors didn't give the game a fair shake. Brad's review was very fair, and he seemed to really enjoy the story and characters and the general action. But when it came to Game of the Year time, everybody talked as if the game was a failure and just didn't live up to expectations. WHAT? This game was LOADS better than freaking Halo Reach and should have gotten the 360 GOTY award. Was this even an honorable mention? I think the gameplay was good up to a little before the end, and the story was one of the best of any game I've ever played. I am going to go back and S-rank this game too. It's amazing, scary, gripping...geez you guys are lame sometimes. On that note, I want to know what unknown, ethereal third-person shooters these guys are playing when they say that Alan Wake and Mass Effect 2 are simply passable. Gears of War is better, as is Uncharted, but I can't think of any others that are any better than these. What, is Army of Two better? Kane and Lynch? Heck no.

GTA IV

Now I just have beef with the whole editorial industry, I guess, because nearly EVERYONE openly admits that the gameplay in these games is generally downright awful and the best parts about it are the characters and storylines...which are mainly just overblown, profane stereotypes. Tons of people, after raving about this game in reviews and giving it perfect scores, wanted to go back and modify it because I think the realized how poor it really was. What gives? These guys still gave it GOTY over Gears of War 2 and MGS4 despite the arguing of everyone but Jeff that the actual game part of it was horrible. Brad didn't even want to finish it at all despite the great story because it was so annoying and frustrating. Do you understand it? Maybe I'm just not rough enough. Whatever. I think glorifying gangs and mafias is a bad idea one way or another, even if this game does paint it as an awful world to live in. Whatever. Again, play it if you like it, I guess. It just seems like a collection of everything wrong in games these days.

Prince of Persia
I like the art style of this reboot, but...uh, remember how the first Assassin's Creed was extremely repetitive to the point of being almost painfully boring after a short while? Yeah, this game's even worse, because the stuff you're doing isn't even as cool or fluid as the AC series. Dang it, I really wanted to like this game too because it's so pretty and stuff but...it ain't no Sands of Time, that's for sure. Now THAT was a game. Dang it Brad, you crazy.

Despite this rant, brought on by my recent experience with Dead Space 2, I more often than not find myself agreeing with the assessments these guys put on games and I trust their journalism. But every now and then...geez, you guys...I know an opinion's an opinion, but sometimes you can be straight up wrong. Maybe I'm wrong. Whatever. I'm not suggesting they should change their opinions or their reviews, I just don't agree sometimes. Whatever. Peace.

I really enjoyed Dead Space 2, and almost across the board disagree with almost everything you said about almost all these games. I really liked Alan Wake but I have zero interest in it as a franchise or to replay it because of basically all the same falts listed by everyone else, mostly of it just being so freakin gamey with it's interface and collectibles.

I can't comment on Other M, or Prince of persia cause I've never been into the series either at all or past the originals.

Funny thing about opinions is that it's an opinion, you can try and make sure you're as 'right' as you possibly can be but your opinion is based on your own personal experience with the game and with past games leading up to it. You can't filter yourself to be just like someone else and even if one person like 99% of the same things you do doesn't mean they will enjoy that next thing just as much as you, they may even think it's utter crap and have good reasons.

I don't come to giantbomb because of their editorial integrity or whatever. I mean that is nice and stuff... but I come because their content is enjoyable and most of the time funny, and even watching stuff from games I know I'll never touch or even enjoy is something I find myself doing all the time. Unless it's some super boring Japanese based rpg where even great commentary can't save my interest in it. Or handheld stuff, cause I've never been a person that enjoys gaming outside at all, I'm strightly a listen to music and podcasts on the bus guy, not a DS or PSP etc.

As long as they play a game THEN give an opinion I don't mind. The issue for me is when they comment on things they clearly haven't played or have no interest in doing so like they know everything about said game.

Confused by your comments on Dead Space 2. You said you were tired of the first by the end, Brad says 2 is more of the same, and you are disappointed when it is? If you didn't think the formula held up till the end of one game, why would you expect to like it in a second? Also not sure why you found it anymore difficult than it's predecessor.

Again, have to strongly disagree with your assessment of Alan Wake. The gameplay is horribly tedious. Wake's strengths are story and atmosphere, but that gets bogged down in having to shoot way too many guys along the way. You're right about the gunplay not being any worse than other second tier shooters, but the problem is I don't want to play any of those games either. It's more frustrating here because there are legitimately good parts you want to get to, but they make your way through tangential crap to get there. The game was unfortunately designed to it's weaknesses.

I agree with you about both Dead Space 2 and Alan Wake. Alan Wake was stayed with me long after I finished it, great game. But Dead Space 2 has been a big dissapointment. I loved the first, but I'm on chapter 11 of the second and I just can't get the energy to finish it. I've found it really boring and repetitive.

I agree about Dead Space 2, but what's frustrating for me is that I liked Dead Space and wasn't getting tired of it by the end. Somehow, amid all their improvements for the sequel, they did one thing (or many small things) that fucked everything right up, and I still can't properly describe what exactly it was. So I understand why Brad would give it 5 stars, but at the same time it baffles me that anyone could have liked it that much.

Those guys are fucking tards and they know it. You just play it as you know how. Even written reviews are not set in stone in the larger scheme of things, opinions change, you change and in the long run, reviews and opinions are for that moment in time and they allow individuals to access certain information that pertains to us as individuals to be used accordingly. It's simple really. Opinions have words of fact and fiction, it's what we subscribe to at the time that gets our attention.

Dead Space 2 (and 1) are two games I don't understand the praise for. They don't send enough enemies at you at once, the enemy placements become way too predictable due to those damn vents, and the necromorphs feel like paper compared to the beefy enemies in Resident Evil 4 + 5. Plus the necromorphs are kinda terrible looking; nobody is gonna be scared of a turd with a human face carved in it.

I'll also agree that it was kind of a bummer to hear the guys so down on Alan Wake. Yeah, there is too much combat but it's still some of the best feeling third person shooting around and everything else in that game was just fantastic.

@bukkookkub: Please don't.
I realized something making this list: if anything these guys have serious journalistic integrity, because about 95% of the time or something the guys give a game fair treatment and are willing to give it a shot even if they think they won't like it. They didn't review Demon's Souls because none of them felt qualified to do so, and they don't do sports games typically for the same reason, or JRPGs. I usually only disagree with how high they rated a game, not the other way around.

I'm not claiming I'm right, other than the "My opinion is better than yours" ridiculousness that is obviously not "fact." Can't you guys recognize a mindless rant when you see one? You can enjoy all these games for all I care. Whatever. I just didn't agree.

Since I rarely agree with people on just about any and every subject I really don't have any use for opinion pieces on sites. I don't care about anyone's opinion on anything but my own. I watch the videos, play the games, and make my own decisions about whether or not it's worth playing.

@Slaker117: He says it's not more of the same, even though it could have been. And with some better pacing and a bit more variety, I would have totally loved every minute of the first one. Instead it improves only the story and does worse at nearly everything else that isn't just plain identical to the first game.

@528seven
I know, right? I still gave the game four stars because I just can't articulate what they did wrong exactly, other than the really cheap difficulty spikes. I can't put my finger on it but I really didn't like it at all.

  • New Super Mario Bros. Wii

I think the charm of this game is in multiplayer, which might come at the expense of single-player. I like it, but it's not a classic. Galaxy is the true innovative Mario game for Wii.

  • Bionic Commando Rearmed

I love this game. The controls are tight. It just feels good to play. The Challenge Rooms show that off (arguably more fun than the game proper). I could take or leave the art style.

  • Rock Band 3

I want to like this game more than I do. I prefer the metagames (and track list) of Rock Band 2.

Rock Band 3 just seems functional: it's a stat-tracking, music-playing program, rather than a "game".

  • GTA IV

San Andreas was better. GTA IV does make a great first impression with the story and the organic movement controls, and I do love the feeling of driving around in the city.

Every gameplay element other than driving is clunky and the story drags on. The side missions are there but aren't as fun because the game takes itself too seriously.

I've stopped reading the reviews here, I find myself disagreeing far too often and getting frustrated with The GB Crew's complaints or praises. The biggest two for me are: Buggy ass, glitchy ass, fucking recycled New Vegas gets praised out the ass (and let's be honest, it's fucking fallout 3 all over again, not that it's bad, but it's not new, and it should be slammed for reused assets), but the phenomenal and overlooked Lost Planet 2 gets panned because they don't want to learn a new way to play shooters or bother to look at control scheme layouts.
I know enough about my own gaming tastes that I only skim reviews for technical info (any game breaking bugs or glitches) because I know my own tastes will often be out of line with review scores.

Review events always seem to artificially pump up review scores and publishers know it. GTA IV reviewed higher than it should have, Modern Warfare 2 and Black Ops also benefited from the limited exposure time allotted to reviewers when it came time to score those games in my humble opinion. Anytime I hear of day one reviews being based on a review event I take the final scores and text (especially regarding multiplayer) with a huge grain of salt.

I disagree with GB reviews sometimes, but as you said it's bond to happen, I do respect how well thought out their feeling are for a game. That to me is more valuable. That being said I loved Dead Space 2, Prince of Persia, I like Alan Wake, and GTA IV, from what I played of it. Also, I rarely read a review because I need a decision made on if I want a game or not. I read them for entertainment value more so than information. If a game is a big mystery (L.A. Noir) then yes a review becomes important to me. Otherwise, I'm good.

Its cool that you expressed your opinion and went on this crazy rant. A lot of people don't have the balls to disagree with the popular opinion. But dissing on other people's opinions isn't cool. Just let the giantbomb guys think what they want and don't let it get to you. FYI, I love/enjoyed every game on that list of yours.

@MormonWarrior: I haven't read the review since it was new, but I'm almost certain Brad's comments on the game there, in the Quick Look and on the podcast were "it's like the first one". The controls underwent some small tweaks, and the scale was turned up, but the core experience is the very same. I don't believe he said anything to suggest it wasn't more of the same, just tightened up a little. Perhaps it tightened what you enjoyed from the first right out, and you are free to not like it, but it seems you maybe misunderstood what was being said?

@Maelstrom: Giant Bomb was still new when GTA4 was released and I don't believe they attended any review event for the game. If I remember correctly Jeff and Ryan's first experience with it was at the midnight release and a review was not posted until about a week later.

Dead Space 2 was a little hard and it seemed the difficulty was baked in to provide more suspense.  I find Dead Space 2 boring as hell largely due to the fact you have to run a certain way, you have to do things a certain way. It doesnt feel linear, but knowing if I dont run down this hallway, and do this specific thing I will die is about as annoying as realizing most of the game solutions are soo painfully obvious you shouldnt be enjoying dying when you make a mistake. Realistically I just couldnt find the game that fun. Making the game fun instead of a chore would have persuaded.

Alan Wake was a good game, however due to its design I felt more obliged to not explore, something all good horror games allow you to do. Overall its storyline and not its gameplay was what I enjoyed about it. This is a very significant reason not to be GOTY.

Fable 2 and 3 both sucked. Terrible, terrible games.

GTA 4 was a good game, but at least for me I found it pretty much unplayable from a fun story perspective (I found the story boring and repetitive, horribly linear). The sandbox aspect was great though.

Bionic Rearmed had some serious issues when playing against bosses mainly to do with the controls and the inability to actual throw the objects in the game.

I sort of agree with you about Fable 2. I played through it all, but a lot of things really bothered me and when I was done, I was done. It was fun, but I didn't have the experience that others seemed to.

I agree with you on Bionic Commando Rearmed. I loved the original when I was a kid. I forced myself to play through rearmed, hoping I'd find something to love. I never did.

I disagree on the points of GTA IV. I loved that game and thought it was every bit as good as Jeff said, and I say that as someone who didn't read any of it or listen to the Bombcasts discussing it until after I finished the game, not to avoid spoilers, but because I hadn't really discovered the site yet.

I COMPLETELY agree with you about Alan Wake. It really impressed me. I loved everything going on in that game. After playing the first bits I decided to play the rest at night with headphones. It's not because I was trying to make it scarier or anything weird like that. The atmosphere was so moody and well done that I wanted to isolate myself from everything external. That really helped to suck me in and make it a great experience. It's easily in the top couple of games I've played from 2010.

I disagree with them all the time- Mercs 2, Dante's Inferno- but it sounds like you just have a bad taste in games, because Dead Space 2, Fable 2, Rock Band 3, Bionic Commando Rearmed were all great- and Darksiders was fucking awesome.

I wouldn't say they are very opinion based, Jeff usually is one to say something like "I can see why people like this game and why its a good game, but I don't like it" which is usually for quick looks. But I do see how you would disagree with them on their opinions, but your just using your own opinion.  Your just saying your opinion is better then theirs...

Edit: Sorry I didn't see that you said that in a later post, well at least you recognize that you did that and aren't claiming your opinion is far superior. Now I just look like an ass for pointing something out that you didn't do...sorry dawg

I disagree with a lot of their 5-star reviews, as they're often conventional or not even close to pinnacles of the genre: see Portal 2, L.A. Noire, Mass Effect, Dragon Age, Batman: AA, GTA: Chinatown Wars, Uncharted, Limbo, Call of Duty, inFamous, LBP, etc. Not saying all of those games are bad mind you, but they're closer to three stars than five to my mind. I've come to the conclusion that games are often rated as if they were cars: if they're technically proficient, reliable, from the right developer and run fast then they're 10/10 GOTY, and if the game is more ambitious yet has even somewhat lacking graphics, UI, or technical polish (Lost Planet 2 etc.) then they're shit. Dunno about you guys, but I don't care about 1080p graphics or a pretty multiplayer hub if the game itself has extremely simplistic or unrefined mechanics and/or if its narrative (if it's a story-based game) is botched. To me a game should be seen as the sum of its mechanics and narrative as a meaningful "work", one that's hopefully fun to play and either advances its genre or does what's already been established very well.

I absolutely hated the Lost Planet 2 review, it's so bad that I would rage but it's not really my style. I thought it was highly slanted (OH WHAT THE ITEM SLOT MACHINE ISN'T ALWAYS USEFUL WTF!) but to each their own.

Im usually OK with Jeff's opinions.. thou I do like inventory management, I guess my taste is more close to the one of the VInny and Dave.

The one I really don't get it's Brad he's somewhat inconsistent and he over hypes - over rate stuff I don't really care for.. just look at the L.A Noire podcast.. I mean game is good but common, not nearly as good as he put it.

I'mma take it all 360 degrees and counter yer counter opinions! for fun!! woo!

Dead Space 2:
I didn't find DS2 THAT identical to the first game. The first game was way more puzzle heavy. Despite the fact that i liked the puzzles in the first game i highly enjoyed DS2. Didn't find it that difficult, in fact it, was too easy up until a heavy shift around the end where the difficulty unexpectedly ramped up. The difficulty required you use the full breadth of the game, killing dudes by throwing impaling objects with telekinesis (which is very powerful) and using stasis for crowd control. It brings a better sense of strategy back to gaming and im all for that!

New Super Mario Bros Wii:
You play it with friends...if you do otherwise, you're doing it wrong!

Rhythm Heaven:
never played it...you get a pass on that one!

Bionic Commando Rearmed:
I liked this game! i liked all the things you did not claim to like! structured arguments! if you're trying to tell me that Rearmed was more saturated then the ordinal then you are a crazy person or you do not know what "color saturation" means!

Rock Band 3:
It is what it is! When a game has the number 3 on the back of it i usually no longer care to take the argument any farther then that!

Fable 2:
I liked the story of Fable:the lost Chapters better but Fable 2 was a huge improvement on refining the gameplay. Good things are good!

Metroid Other M:
never played it, don't care! PASS!

Darksiders:
IT'S ON MY TO DO LIST! i'm getting to it! get off my back!

Alan Wake:
The combat, good as it was at first, didn't really evolve. Got redundant. The emphasis on "collectible items" pulled you out of the experience! these are bad things!!! I don't even know what the hell happened as far as the story when i finished the game...story bad!!! Great game. Worthy of higher praise? not so much!

GTA IV:
key quote, "wanted to go back". If everyone used that term referring to all games all the time; ALL GAMES ARE TERRIBLE! It was a character piece more then anything, the appeal was in the exaggerated cast of characters more then anything!

Prince of Persia:
i have the reboot on steam, haven't played it, probably never will!!!

Opinions!!!! i got'em!

So since he made a topic about people having different opinions then him, I should post that I disagree with his opinions, and then someone else can post that they disagree with my opinions, or I can just be happy in knowing I have my own opinions and not everyone has to agree with them.

@MormonWarrior: I think you're missing the point that all reviews are "totally opinion based". Gamespot was in no way more analytical nor clinical. Just because they had more numbers besides stuff like graphics, gameplay, and audio in addition to the main review score, it doesn't mean that those numbers were in any way less opinion driven. There was never any empirical formula to arrive at any of those numbers; they were driven by the whims of the reviewer, not to mention the date of the review.

Would anyone expect a game with a graphics score of 8 in 1998 than a game with a graphics score of 7 in 2004 to actually have better graphics? Furthermore, I would hazard a guess that most, if not all, of the reviewers did not take a keen eye towards the history of their own review scores. So, I then don't see how you would even begin comparing scores for one game to another, let alone between other reviewers. I like Giant Bomb's move towards less granularity with scores. I would however like it even better if it was distilled into three levels:
  • play
  • try
  • don't play
That's essentially why you made this rant, right? A game got reviewed poorly, but you enjoyed your time with it; or a game got reviewed glowingly, but you had no passion for it.

With all that said, I only had one issue to take note of from your rant. The opinions you expressed about Rock Band 3 piano are pretty much the same exact way real guitarists felt about the guitar "instrument" ever since Guitar Hero. You're not actually playing the instrument, you're pressing buttons in time to a song. There's no phrasing or interpretation. You just press keys. Singers felt the same way about how the singing was scored. Real drummers couldn't even play the game correctly until they pushed it to expert. Just like DDR had nothing to do with real dancing, music games have nothing to do with real music.

@owl_of_minerva: This is where I disagree, while we need ambitious games, there definitely is something to a well polished game. The trend I see with them is they appreciate the first ambitious game and usually don't peg it down to much for some of its flaws (maybe lost planet 2 is deferent, I didn't read the review or play it so I have no input on that) Then when that sequel of said ambitious game comes out and it takes what made the first game better and then just improves it, then I think that is a better game then the first, even thought the first one is more ambitious. Then its those kinda games that get GOTY nominations alot, thats USUALLY what I see.
That being said I thoroughly enjoyed shadowrun, a pretty ambitious game in my opinion, and I think it got pretty bad reviews all around so I can sympathize with your point.

Man I really set off a fire, didn't I? And yet I've always argued that video games are the one medium where reviews can be more or less right. This is different from movies, music, books, etc. because none of those things are ever released fundamentally broken. You'll get your money back if a CD is cracked or won't play, or if a movie cuts out halfway through because it didn't burn right to the disc, but even with incoherent stupid storylines a movie still begins and ends just as you expect. Video games can be totally busted or extremely derivative and boring, bringing nothing to the table and not being worth your money. It's really in the 7.5-10 range (say, on Metacritic or whatever) that the distinction becomes much more about opinion, especially from about 8.8-10. That's where personal taste completely comes into play. Is anybody going to argue that a game with a Metacritic score of 40 is somehow a hidden gem or even worth playing no matter who you are? Nope.

Although a disturbing amount of you are defending that totally piece of flaming garbage Lost Planet 2, and that was a 68 on Metacritic. That's it, YOU guys are crazy. The Giant Bomb guys are totally alright. I guess some people like Dynasty Warriors too. Some people are mentally challenged as well. :)

I dont know if I would say the GB guys arent analytical in their assessment of games, but I do like how they allow the way they felt during the game to sort of rule their final judgment. If you are recommending a game to a friend, you arent going to pour over every detail of the game; instead, you are going to take your likes and their likes into account and tell them if they would like it or not. That is pretty much what the GB guys are doing.

Needless to say, I like the GB review system. I think the 5 point scale is the way to go, and I seem to agree with their reviews more than other sites.

Maybe if you had one or two examples I could understand the use of the word "divergent." But when you can produce a list that big, I'd just chalk it up to your tastes being different than the crew's.

This would make fine use of the lists feature.

I don't always agree with GB reviews either, but there are some quality user reviews on the site. I generally know from reading the complaints in the review which ones will bother me and how much, so it still serves its purpose. I usually don't go out of my way to share any disagreements I have with a GB review unless I find some really petty shit being mentioned as if it kills the game. That happens way more often in Quick Look than reviews though.

I heard that a lot people thought Lost Planet 2 was a disappointment. But you know what? If you like it, who the hell cares what reviews say. I tend to agree with GB but if you the best thing about games is there are games for all tastes.

It's an awful game.

Very pretty. Awful.
