No offense to Jeff- I respect him for being a founding father of the site, but over the years he has become increasingly bitter and jaded. It seems like he hates everything nowadays and has very few positive things to say about most games. I stopped watching the game of the year awards because it's become a dictatorship- whatever he says goes. It stopped being a group vote a long time ago. I don't think he left intentionally, I think people were unhappy and finally starting to voice their complaints. There's a reason nearly everyone left to start Next Lander. I think he's likely a difficult person to work with and that boiled up over time and led to him being asked to leave. Just my guess anyways. When Brad, Vinny & Alex left- it was obviously their choice, they talked about it and explained their reasons on the podcast before doing so. They said their goodbyes. This was sudden and swept under the rug, that to me points to him being asked to go.
