Man this thread did turn into the Phil Fish debate center. Poor Fez will always be judged by its creator.

I'm not coming down on this argument one way or another, for I have not played FEZ, but he spends the entirety of Indie Game the movie going on about how Fez is the most personal game of all time, he and the game are one, and that the essence of indie games is putting yourself into it in a way that doesn't happen with bigger games.

So, it's a tad more relevant than in, say, an LA Noire, for he himself is attempting to benefit from the positive sides of that discussion. To ignore the negative is to have the cake, and eat it too. So I can see why it's especially prevalent with this game.

That argument falls apart for me if you look at it like this: Everyone is accusing Phil Fish of being this angry, racist prick, right? Well if you look at Fez, it's the exact opposite of what people are accusing him of. There's no combat, the world is peaceful and mysterious, the music is relaxing and airy...it's nothing like his "public persona". So, in that respect, I do think it's OK to have my cake and eat it too.

Oh, I'm not saying I agree with the argument or not, cause I haven't played the game, I'm just saying that I can see why people are talking about Phil Fish's public persona a lot more, when he himself is using his personal connection as promotional material for the game. Plenty of people make games and can be accused of a lot of things, true or not, but that's the reasons I see as to why it's especially prevalent with this game specifically.

You should play it, and then you'll understand. :D

especially with an indie game, if the creator's a dick that makes people not want to support him; simple facts.

I liked ender's game before I knew how orson scott card was a crazy fuckin mormon asshole, but after that I could never really read it again.

@MURDERSMASH: sure, and I didn't really like myst anyway; if a game wants me to piece together shit, I'd rather enjoy playing it (like dark souls, for example).

Heh, funny thing is, I don't like Dark Souls for how obtuse it is, at least in some ways. My biggest complaint about it, though, is how everything respawns if you die. It turns the combat from a tense, delicate dance into a tedious, needlessly hard grind. And to me, that isn't fun at all.

But that's off-topic.

Awesome, Fez is coming to other platforms! Lets hop onto some message boards to...OH COME ON! FEZ is coming to other platforms, not THE VIRTUAL PHIL FISH SIMULATOR. Can we all please just fucking talk about Fez for once? The same bullshit is being spewed over at Reddit as well, and i'm sick and tired of all the cynicism, ignorance, and negativity surrounding Fish. He has an abrasive personality. WE GET IT. Holy fucking shit. Swallow your damn pride for two seconds and just take a look at the game as-is.

I don't even care about him at this point, but it's still a sticking point for a large group of people.

more specifically it's the fact that there will be very little of that original zeitgeist of trying to solve the puzzles that there were in the 360 version, which according to the crew was a large part why that game was so cool

Discovering that stuff is still really amazing, even if you are able to look up hints. I actually didn't get to NG+ until sometime in May, which is several weeks after all the puzzles were already worked out. I actually cracked one of the languages myself (the tetris shapes one), and that was an AMAZING feeling. Some of the stuff that I was completely stuck on, like the alphabet, or the clock, etc., I looked up, and even looking up the solutions was mind-blowing when I started piecing together in my head how I would come to those conclusions.

So, yeah...the zeitgeist is gone, but you'll still be amazed by what the game has to offer regardless.

I wouldn't have bought the game anyways honestly, this is mostly because it is an indie 2d platformer and I have hated every one I've played.

and even then the puzzle solvey stuff just makes it sound like myst or something

It's not really a platformer, but I get what you're saying. It really is a 2D Myst, in many ways. The platforming is just how you get around the world, kind of like in Myst, how you get around the world by clicking. God, just thinking of Myst is making me nostalgic. Absolutely LOVE that game.

I suppose I should clarify my beef with the map isn't that I don't understand it. I understand it perfectly fine. I just find it difficult to move around and see properly, since the portraits for the locations are so small and focused on one aspect of the destination. I also find it tedious having to trace myself a path from A to B. IU suppose 'tedious' would be a good word to use for why I find a lot of the game hard to warm to.

Also, I do have to echo what has been said above - I remember when Riven first came out.. I had pages of notes done in pen and colour pencil. Most of those notes were as hard for people to decipher as the game its self. I even used to draw maps for Zork games on grid paper. However, I just don't think thats the sort of thing I want to do anymore.. I used to enjoy it, but now I guess I'm just too old?

That said.. if you guys who love it all think it's acceptable to use hints from online, and that's not just going to ruin my chances of enjoying the game at all.. I'll give it another chance.

The map also has a zoom function if you're having trouble seeing the portraits.

As for the hints, I would recommend not going for them until you've seen the first ending. Getting all 32 yellow cubes is simply a matter of just platforming. That's it. The crazy puzzle-solving, glyph deciphering, etc. doesn't come into play until you start New Game+. If you're stuck, you just need to find a couple doors that you missed. Could you give us some details as to what you've seen? Like, have you uncovered all 4 of the main hubs you can access via the warp gates? Stuff like that.

Trust me, it's worth working through the first ending to see the real insanity buried in the NG+.

I finally joined the Xbox 360 party this year, and I'm looking to add 3 new games that are currently going for $40 at Best Buy and Target. One game I'm picking up for certain is Black Ops II. So pick 2 more from the following list:

  • WWE 13 (I haven't watched wrestling in years, but have always been a fan of wrestling games. I heard they made some strides with this version)
  • Madden 13 (Huge football fan, but haven't played Madden since Madden 10.)
  • Forza Horizon (Is this redundant since I already have Forza 4?)
  • Halo 4 (I'm thinking maybe if I want to play a shooter I'll be playing Black Ops II.)

I want to focus on the multiplayer aspect of the 360, as I've had a PS3 for some time and have a good PC that I do a lot of single player gaming on. Keep in mind I got the 250GB bundle so have Skyrim and Forza 4 Essentials Edition already, and I also picked up Mass Effect 3 and Crackdown. I also intend to pick up ME1 and ME2. I just want to take advantage of these sales right now.

I'd say Forza Horizon, and, while it's not on your list, get Fez. FEZ, DUDE. FEZ. JESUS CHRIST, FEZ IS GOOD. GET IT.

You may have missed the code-cracking zeitgeist, but the game is still a great experience. The GB crew suggested that, when you go to play it, don't even look at the internet for clues until you've seen the first ending, because you can easily beat the game the first time by simply exploring and picking up the yellow cube and cube-bits. A handful of the anti-cube puzzles are relatively simple as well, so that makes reaching the magical 32 much easier the first time around.

It's great that other people had such a good time with it, but this all seems a little baffling from my point of view. The ME3 multiplayer always just felt clunky and rather unpleasant to me.

Yeah, in some ways, ME3's combat in general is just clunky. It's because they bound so many abilities to the space bar (played the PC version). If they had spread out the controls more, I think that would have helped a ton. Other than that, though? The ME3 multiplayer was really great. It's hard as hell, which means your team has to work together, which always makes for an amazing experience when playing with friends. Reminds me of my WoW days, when we'd group up together and run the really hard dungeons.

Oh geez, you just reminded me of the synchronized rocket launcher attacks on Gold. You had to call out your shots and decide on an order to launch to prevent people from wasting rockets.

Hell yeah, that was awesome!
