Gaming in 2013 - The List So Far

Figured I would get my 2013 list started even though it's still technically 2012. Since the GOTY stuff is all over, this should be as good a time as any, right? This will be a mix of old and new stuff that I've played for this year. Since i'm starting this during a two-week break from work, I've played through a surprising amount of games already!

List items

  • Ehh...you know, I was really pulled in by the first 30 minutes or so. Really funny, with some great action set pieces too. But, once I got into the open world, and ended up at some customization house, the endlessly respawning enemy gangster helicopters shooting me as I tried to just get away to do something else reminded me how much I fucking HATE open-world city crime games like GTA, Sleeping Dogs, and this. Argh, it's so frustrating, because the beginning was SO promising.

  • Near flawless, mechanically, and the ending is really cool. I must have really enjoyed it, since I played through it in two sittings, but I found myself really frustrated at several parts, mostly from trying to do too much, too fast I guess. Overall, a really good game. Definitely recommend it!

  • I looooove me some Doom 3. It's so impressive that a game closing in on ten years old still looks so damn good, and that's thanks to it's impressive use of lighting. It created a really dark, creepy atmosphere, and when color is mixed in, it's pure eye candy. Fuck the haters, this game is great!

  • This game is a ton of fun. Breakout-style games are always great to play, and this one puts a really unique spin on the formula. God damn that soundtrack is good, too. SO GOOD. Recommended!

  • One of the best first person shooters ever made. There, I said it. Come at me, bro.

Seriously though, I absolutely adore this game. The suit mechanics make me feel like a superhuman, sneaking through the jungle in stealth one moment, and then absorbing bullets like a tank the next. Even five years later, the graphics are still the benchmark by which all games today are judged. HIGHLY recommended!

  • Woo boy, this is a tough one! I rage-quit after about 20 minutes since it gets so hard, so quickly. For those of you who love those super-tough platformers, this will be right at home in your library, though it's not a platformer in the traditional sense. Cool sense of style, and a killer soundtrack. Recommended!

  • Interesting game, for sure. It's like part Sim City, part RTS-something-or-other. Really slick interface and presentation. Only put in a couple hours so far, but from what i've played, it's complex and engaging.
