Sonic 4 is apparently one of the best XBLA games out.

Despite the fact that nobody has played it yet. I was just searching XBLA for arcade games. As you may know, XBox Live has a rather pointless rating system where every bit of content can be given a rating out of five stars. Of course all fighting games that require the slightest bit of practise to get good at get low ratings while anything Halo gets universal 5s. But thats for another day.

Live has the option to see all the highest rated games. I would say most of them deserve to be there. I'm particularly glad to see that my favourite game of all time is very popular. But one thing is odd- just after SOTN is the unreleased Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode One. Apparently Sonic 4 is the 20th best game on Live Arcade according to user ratings.

I'm like most (ex)Sonic fans- I loved the Mega Drive games but hated the 3D shit. I'm kind of looking forward to this promise of a return to form but at the same time like any sensible person I am very, very skeptical given Sonic's downfall as a whole. I'm not sure what the point of this post is. I just find it stupid that 976 people are willing to rate a game that isn't even out yet. Maybe I'm getting the rating thing wrong. Maybe its just to reflect personal opinion of something. Its like its just proof of good marketing which in turn is just more good marketing.

Screw rating systems. People need to voice their options- not just give a vague "good" or "bad" and run off. Give reason and meaning.

What do you think of the rating system on XBL? I think of them the same way I do with all user ratings- with distaste.

Honestly i dont even pay attention to them :I

I don't feel strong enough about it to care.
It's there, it's easily ignorable and if there's people out there who enjoy using it, all the more power to them.

Damn people and there opinions. Damn them for liking Halo over some fighting game. DAMN THE WORLD.

Also i was under the impression those ratings where for the sonic 4 video that's up. I don't think they can actually vote for a game that isn't out yet just trailers and stuff that are out. Not 100% sure on that.

No, they can. Otherwise it wouldn't appear in top rated.

I'm not that upset about this as many of you seem to imply- I just thought it was pretty stupid.

And having an opinion of something that you have no experience of is fucking dumb. And Halo is fucking garbage.

I actually think the rating system is very forward-thinking compared to what was there before: nothing. I'm not surprised that Halo gets high ratings, a lot of people play that game and enjoy it. If a game I like gets a low rating, like say Scramble, it doesn't really affect my enjoyment. As for people voicing their full opinion...well, that's why we have Giant Bomb.

You're right, on the Xbox Live Marketplace web page for Sonic 4 Episode I the game is getting a 4.5 star rating right now, and it's not even out. Anybody can go on and rate this unreleased game. That's kinda broken.

The idea, I guess, is that since you can change your rating, the scores should balance out by the time the game comes out.  But like others have said, I don't really pay attention.

Who cares about the rating system?....nice nerd rage though.

i havent cared about sega since forever, they keep putting out crap games so i keep ignoring them

Dayum....it MUST be good to be getting such high ratings before it's even released. The next shadow complex in terms of downloadable game quality, definitely!

Game ratings is one of the only online features that MS could learn a thing or two about from Nintendo. The fact that you actually have to play a game for an hour before you're able to rate or recommend something on the Nintendo Channel keeps the ratings more genuine. Unfortunately though, this feature is hidden away in the Nintendo Channel which 99% of Wii owners (including myself) probably never touch.

I actually went and rated all my games right when that came out.  I was hoping it would be like Netflix where it would start bossing me around and tell me what to play.  Instead, it didn't do much of anything.

The XBLA rating system is very screwed up. It's difficult to do a user-rating system and have it work very well though. An alternative I can think of off the top of my head would be to not allow people to rate something out of the blue. Have them purchase the game, and then 1-2 weeks later they could get a message in their XBL inbox asking them to rate the game. Maybe it would get more legit ratings that way.

They're essentially user reviews, and I give more credit to user reviews than to journalist reviews.

I absolutely care about the rating system.  The point of having that star rating system is to give an indicator of whether I should spend my money.  I mean, I'll still end up doing my research beyond that, but rarely does a demo for an XBL game really give me a good idea of whether I want to play the game or not.  Hell, it'll barely tell me if it's a game that I'll play multiple times.

Moreover, I think it's stupid to allow ratings on games that haven't been released yet.

When dose it come out?

User reviews that are that easy to do and don't require any actual effort are always absolutely useless see:  metacritic, amazon etc. Combine this with the Sonic fanbase which is probably the worst online and you have a recipe for disaster. Just ignore it man.

The problem with Sonic is you either don't care or you are obsessively writing Mighty the Armadillo/Jeff Goldblum crossover slash fiction and cosplay as Charmy the Bee.

I don't pay attention to the ratings system, even if those ratings were backed up with some kind of greater justification I don't put much worth in the opinion of the average Xbox LIVE gamer. Honestly, I don't think half the people who do post those ratings could piece together any real kind of review of these products and here is a situation where a game has gotten a good rating simply because a bunch of people saw the name 'Sonic' and entered 5 stars without even playing the game.
