Just Finished Machinarium

A fellow Giant Bomber recommended this game to me, and I just completed it.  I'm sure I'll have more thoughts on this game (from the same guys that made Samorost 2), but for now my reaction is very positive.  The game is extremely cute, the puzzles are generally not ridiculous (my biggest problem with adventure games), and the art style is very appealing.  Plus, it includes an in-game hint system that largely precludes the need for looking online for hints, while at the same time being just cumbersome enough to use to make me think twice before using it.  Just really well put together, with a nice little story delivered completely without dialogue.

@Geekcore:  I'm with you on the bead-dragging puzzle.  I did not get a lot of fun out of that one.  But the in-game assistance pretty much shows you exactly how to solve that one, so I can't complain about it too much.

I beat this game as part of the humble bundle too. It was awesome and I was glad to see a fresh take on the adventure genre. The puzzles were just hard enough to drive me a little mad, but the solutions made sense, for the most part.

@mzuckerm:  So I finished Machinarium , and the last couple of puzzles (bead dragging and  arcade machine 2) really gave me fits. I really enjoyed the art, the music, the atmosphere, and the characters. But like RockmanBionics, I occasionally had issues because I didn't interact with one small element in the game, which made me look up answers in game walk-through only to be annoyed by a simplistic answer.

I really liked and enjoyed the game, but I do think some of the puzzles were too obscure. Like I said earlier, this was my first point and click adventure--so I could just be a newbie--but the game didn't always equip me to see what was coming next. I like it when you feel like the game is teaching you all the rules before you have to implement them in the game.

But I did feel that the journey was ultimately satisfying. The game oozes with personality, which was the main reason I was drawn to it.

Steam says I've played two hours of it. It's pretty great except for that part whre I got stuck for a long time, looked up the walkthrough only to find I had missed a very small dimly flashing button.

Also any part that requires me to learn a different game (playing five-in-a-row with that robot) or plan out my moves (that safe in the prison) I just have no patience with whatsoever.

But yeah, otherwise it's great.

@Geekcore:  There are a few mildly annoying parts to the game (like waiting for animations to complete).  But that sort of goes hand-in-hand with adventure games, and I think Machinarium does a good job of doing less of that than some adventure games in the past (cough, cough, Roberta Williams).  It's the journey that I ultimately find satisfying, when you can relax and take in the atmosphere and the visuals.  I've since moved on to the new Back To The Future series, and so far I'm enjoying it.  Takes me back....

I'm about 2 hours into it and I'm enjoying it (this is my first point and click adventure) . I'm interested in hearing more thoughts. When I'm done, I will be sure to add some additional comments.

My only complaint is that once you click on a destination you have to wait for the full animation to play out before you do anything else.

@Venatio: Not particularly.  Like all adventure games, if you know the solutions to the puzzles you can really breeze through it, and if you can't solve any, the game can take a long time. But on average I'd estimate around 6 - 10 hours total.
