Favorite Games of 1997

If it wasn't clear before, GoldenEye 007 should make it clear that I don't always take my justifications seriously.

List items

  • “Shit, Final Fantasy 7 as favorite game? Guess this asshole never played a Final Fantasy game before, otherwise he’d know that it’s actually shit compared to FF6 and FF4, and those games weren’t even released the same year! Materia sucks and Aeris’ death was as emotional as a brick slammed against the side of his head.”

Is that you? Probably not. It’s a crazy exaggeration of one of those annoying people who hate on Final Fantasy VII because of its popularity. Fact is, this WAS my first Final Fantasy game and Aerith’s death WAS kind of emotional for my teenage brain. Furthermore, I never bothered to understand intricacies of Materia, either, simply tossing whatever with anyone who still had open slots. It was my first foray into the RPG genre since Dragon Warrior (and even then I only watched a friend play it), so Final Fantasy VII really was mind-blowing.

Is it still great? Well, the pre-rendered backgrounds look like they were made with melted wax, and the squat models are really strange. (Why are their fists so much larger than the rest of their arms?) And that’s not to say anything about-- well, I can nitpick this game to death, but I still enjoy it. Is it deserving of most popular Final Fantasy? Maybe not.

  • The best Mega Man X game? Quite possibly. The jump to PlayStation brought upgraded visuals, the occasional anime cut scenes, stilted delivery of voiced dialogue, and the ability to play as Zero throughout the entire game.

There’s a negative somewhere in that last of positives, but I can’t put my finger on which. Seriously, watch the scene after Zero (spoiler, I guess) kills Iris. The acting is pretty bad. But the rest of the game is solid, even if I was never able to fucking beat that bitch, Sigma.

  • I regret to say that I’ve barely progressed through Symphony of the Night, and not for lack of interest. I love these types of games. Super Metroid is among my favorite games ever, and I quite enjoyed Circle of the Moon, Aria of Sorrow, and Dawn of Sorrow, but for whatever reason I just stop not long into Symphony.

But some Metroid-like Castlevania (I will never willingly use the word “Metroidvania”) is better than the whole of many games, and that’s why it’s occupying the middle spot.

  • Allow me to be clear: I haven’t played this landmark N64 title in well over a decade. Consequently, I have absolutely no ground to make the following statement: GoldenEye 007 for N64 fucking sucks. I’m not saying it sucked when it was released, but time hasn’t been kind to this game. Again, haven’t played it in a hell of long while and thus have no footing to make such a statement. Just call it a gut reaction.

Will I ever go back and play it? Short of a digital version for Xbox One or Wii U, which I know will never come, absolutely not. I’d rather play Call of Duty or Half-Life 2 or Call of Duty 2 or Halo: Reach or Halo or any other FPS that I know I like and has probably aged better than Rare’s supposed classic.
