Rhythm Goodness

This is a list of my personal favorite music based games. Most are for hand helds but all are fun! Note this list is based on my opinions, and I fully understand a lot of people won't agree with it.  I should also note this list is by no means complete and will be expanded over time. Thanks for looking!

List items

  • Project Diva 2nd keeps some of the original game play as the first but with tweaks to the controls, added difficulty, and a more DDR super nova like store to unlock items, outfits and other customize-ables. The graphics have improved slightly and the game play seems to flow smoother than in the first game. With the newly added 'Extreme' mode of game play and playlist with only a few repeats from the first game there is plenty of replay value for this one. The other Vocaloid characters get much more attention in this one then the last game, with some of the songs being solo's for them. They have also added duets into the game where two characters preform at once. All in all with smoother game play, improved graphics and an awesome playlist this game has very high replay value.

  • Project Diva Arcade is an improved and much more difficult version of Project Diva 2nd in my opinion. The game play is smooth and works nicely with the constant updated playlist. SEGA has a deal with Nico Nico Douga and is constantly updating the playlist for the arcade systems which is rather nice since it means the replay value for this machine is very high. You can use a game card to save your player information much like a save card (though you don't have to in order to play the game) and just like in the previous hand held project diva's you can unlock new outfits and characters to play with. There are some new notes added to the game play, some that involve hitting a group of certain notes at the same time. The graphics are about the same as the ones from Project Diva Dreamy Theater (a Japanese PSN d/l that allows you to play project diva on your ps3 with improved graphics) but that isn't a complaint really.

  • An import title for the PSP. The title can scare most people off, as games with 'Diva' or anything girl related tend to suck stateside. This game is different. You play as Miku Hatsune (which you can later unlock other character avatars and outfits)as you play through a decent size collection of some of her more popular songs. To be far you don't really control her, and the game itself plays out like DDR on crack. You have four buttons that show up in what seem to be random places on the screen along with the beat of the song. There is a tiny clock hand on each note icon that you have to hit it's corresponding button before the clock hand reachs the 12'oclock mark. This game is very fun for fans of rhythm games or Vocaloid music.

  • Much like Guitar Hero and Rock Band, this game brought some thing new to the table. Using a special 'turn table' controller, the game allows players to play through various remixes and gives the player the sense that they are actually the one mixing the music. With a detailed tutorial mode this one is easy for new players to pick up and play. Unlocking Daft Punk was my personal favorite part of this game. All in all I really like this one.

  • I really enjoyed the track list on this one and the game play was what I'd come to expect from the Dance Dance Revolution games.

  • Strangely enough this was the first DDR game I ever played. I was given it as a present for my birthday along with the game mat from a friend. The game play is almost identical to pretty much every other DDR game, but unlike most of the earlier titles this was one (if not the first...though I'm not sure on that) of the first DDR games to have a detailed tutorial mode as well as a mode for people who have a hard time with the normal and advanced difficulties. Some may say part of the game is too easy...but that varying level of difficulty was what made this game fun for me. It gave me a chance to learn how to play and then improve over time while still being able to play a rather large playlist. Again, like with all the items on my list this is just my person thoughts.

  • This game has a fun little story line with varying difficulties and the songs are sorta catchy.

  • While I haven't played many of the Guitar Hero games, this is one of the few I've experienced. The story included is a bit silly but pretty cool, and the game play is smooth and enjoyable. I could go on for a long time about this game...but let's be honest: Almost anyone who's ever played a Rhythm game is familiar with this game franchise.

  • I picked this one up as a random buy a while back and it didn't disappoint. With a decent sized play list of track sets and fast paced game play this one kept me both entertained and frustrated for hours. The game play takes some time getting used to and the controls can be customized if preferred. My only real problem with this game is that for none experience players who aren't familiar with the DJ Max franchise there is a rather steep learning curve presented in the game. Their are only a few lower difficulty songs for people to practice on and no real tutorial mode. All in all though this is a fun buy.

  • The first time I saw this game I thought it looked silly and really never gave it a second glance...until a few years later when I saw my husband playing it. The story is a bit goofy but enjoyable and the game play is smooth and slightly challenging.
