While the AJAX-y live search on GB & the other Whiskey sites is nice in concept, it'd be great to have a more traditional search results page.

The current implementation makes it very difficult to browse a list of search results, particularly if there are lots of results. Also, we can't use search helpers like Shortwave, Alfred, or  other custom search plugins for our web browsers.

So, how about a 'search' button and an actual search results page?

@gpbmike: done. Here you go:  http://db.tt/b2i5IiW

At 129x129, it should look sharp on iPhone, iPhone 4 & iPad. The device adds the rounded corners, gloss & shadows automatically.

You'll need to add this to your page headers:   <link rel="apple-touch-icon" href="/apple-touch-icon.png"/>

The real track-suit-wearing Jeff killed his evil mustachioed twin and reclaimed his place at Giant Bomb.

@greennoodles: I think the level of advertising would be very different without paid subscribers. Think Gamespot/IGN with huge background ads, banners, ads in front of every video, etc.

With a big enough subscriber base, GiantBomb could ideally limit ads to be less in-your-face for non-subscribers. The bargaining position for Whiskey with advertisers is very different if they have a lot of paid subscribers.

@Azteck: First off, I'm not a kid. Please don't call me one.

As far as the value/lack of value of time - sorry, that was a straw man argument, but I was trying to make a point.  Fact of the matter is they could've chosen $1/month and some people would still complain.

Establishing pricing is a difficult task, and Whiskey Media is in somewhat uncharted territory here. They chose a price point, and they'll soon find out if it was the right one. Well-known venture capitalist Paul Graham says that "you've found market price when buyers complain but still pay."

I do agree with you regarding the medals. Personally, I think there should be some sort of icon on a user's profile page denoting their membership status, perhaps next to other medals for wiki contributions, how long you've been a user, taking part in TNT, etc. The current display is probably too in-your-face and could make non-subscribers feel like second-class citizens.

@Titus: I think they have been pretty clear that they are trying to turn Whiskey Media into a real business for some time now. Frankly, the only 'surprise' with the paid memberships was the Bombcast split. It doesn't seem to me that anyone at Whiskey is trying to become an Internet Gajillionaire; they're just trying to do the work they love and make an honest living doing it.

As for $4.95 being a good deal or not, that's up to each Giant Bomb user. If you're a gamer, you're clearly into a pastime that costs a fair amount of money. $50+ console games, $300+ consoles, high-end gaming computers, $50 Xbox Live/PSN memberships, trips to PAX. Put in that perspective, $50/year to support Giant Bomb is a good value for me.

Deep breaths everyone. Giant Bomb isn't going away. The Bombcast will likely not be split (I'm pretty sure they'll hit 5,000 subscribers).

The harsh reality is that a staff of professional writers, editors, producers & tech people costs money. A lot of money. The Whiskey crew have bills & rent to pay, and the company can't run on venture capital (or whatever funding they have) forever. Those of you who don't live in a basement probably realize this.

They're taking a huge risk. Traditional media has always relied upon advertising, but it's clear that can't last forever. Newspapers & magazines are dying. Broadcast/cable television is probably next. The pull of advertising money is what led to Gerstmanngate and started this wonderful Giant Bomb experiment to begin with.

From the start, Giant Bomb has been about and for us, the users. They're asking us to help fund the work they do. From day one they decided to not write advertorials like some other gaming sites. They pick & choose what they review. They aren't afraid to speak their minds, and they never take themselves too seriously. They've become my trusted pals that I turn to whenever I think about games - which is a lot. I'd rather help support them directly than deal with Kane & Lynch 3 full site sponsorships and interstitial ads for dick pills.

For those of you who think this whole operation should be free: Why do you feel that way? Would you prefer that Giant Bomb sell out or shut down completely? For that matter, what do you do for a living? Why don't you do what you do for free?
In terms of value: Has the GB crew entertained you these past couple years? Have their Quick Looks or Reviews saved you money by helping you avoid crappy games? Do you look forward to the Bombcast every week?

To me, $4.95 a month is a bargain for the sheer amount of content that Giant Bomb provides. It's less than a single movie ticket, or a [b|d]urger meal, or a fancy frappucino. The content of the other Whiskey sites is just a bonus.

If you feel that the content isn't worth $4.95, then don't subscribe. You'll still have access to the wiki, news, and yes even the Bombcast. Sure, the back half of the podcast might be delayed a week, but you know what? That shouldn't bother you. You've already decided that GB staff's time isn't worth anything, so a week of your time probably isn't worth anything either.
