Best of 2009

Note: this list is only of games that I have played to completion, have found all the mechanics, or am still playing.

List items

  • This is the kind of game that sticks to your ribs, so to speak. You run it for a few minutes just to level up and before you know it its 20 hours later and your friends list is 20 people longer. all that plus a great dark sense of humor and a great "mad max" ascetic make it my 2009 game of the year and a high ranking in my all time

  • This one of the most trippy, fever-dream, mind-fucks that I have ever experienced and I watch indie moves, so that means something, man. This Chilean release is basically a source engine mod where the new main mechanic is bare knuckle fist fighting. yeah, I know there is some decent gun stuff but the games shines in its raw punching. The atmosphere of Zenozoik (that is what the world is called) is second to none, with unforgettable locations, completely off the wall characters, and "Memento"-esque storytelling. In short, I unconditionally love this game, even though it has some often crippling flaws and glitches.

  • A true masterfully crafted homage to the "MetroidVania" style of game. With not a smattering, but a full on 5 course meal, of hidden collectibles "Shadow Complex" rises above and beyond the common title downloadable game. This was not my number one because of the week plot, I'm looking at you Orson Scott Card.

  • Yes, Modern Warfare 2, the obligatory game on everyone's list who has played it. This is an excellent game with a stellar offline and online component. In fact, this is one of the few games that I can't really tell is the online or the single player is better. The only problems with the game is that the single player could have been a bit longer even if it was just padding, and the barrier for entry on the multilayer is pretty high, so watch out.

  • Much more than a rip-off of Diablo, "Torchlight" game perfects and adds to the experience. The drop in characters from Diablo makes it a much more concentrated game with different ways to play each character. The only apparent fault of the game is how much like Diablo it is, most people have already played too much without playing it. Regardless Diablo 3 has to watch its ass.

  • This is one of the most completely brutal and over all tough rhythm games that got a proper release in the U.S. let alone on the DS. it has some great beats and off the wall visuals. For added fun play with your eyes closed.

  • This is the absolute height of what the Wii can do. drink it in, because it won't get any better than this. It has sword fighting, Archery, wake boarding, disk golf, I mean it has freaking disk golf, they covered all of it. As the debut platform game for the motion plus it succeeds and as a fun party game it doesn't get much better.

  • What can I say, I thought that it was a really good action FPS with really creepy atmosphere. There are definite highs and lows and it could have done a better job of telegraphing where you need to go in some parts. At first I wasn't going to put it on this list, but then I remembered the mech sequences and the invisible enemies and I remembered how god-damn epic some stuff in that game was.

  • This one of those games that could get by on atmosphere and story alone. the fact that I think metal is totally sick and RTS gameplay is legitimately OK is just a bonus. It isn't Tim Schafer's magnum opus, but it has a great story and excellent music.
