Disappointments Of 2013-2014.

So It Begins

At a certain point, we all hop aboard that hype train. Maybe it's a new trailer that finally catches your eye (and that wallet), perhaps it's just a really good soundtrack, but somewhere along the line you're going to lose that battle with common sense and drop the cash.

Please Note that I'm going to be adding to list as the year goes on, moving titles from spot to spot. Just because I make mistakes doesn't mean I learn from them!

Anyway - Here's where I've gone wrong so far...

List items

  • In a perfect world, you would never have to hear about this game again. It would have come out, had it's fans and detractors and then be forgotten like all the rest.

We don't live in a perfect world though so prepare to hear yet another person bitch about this game.

I bought this game along with my PS4; it was to be a glorious time, filled with running, some gunning and perhaps, just perhaps, some explosions.

What I got instead was an inability to earn the platinum due to saves continually getting erased (I have beaten the campaign, no lie, seven times already), stats i.e. guns being reset from server to server and, of course, crashes.

People used to defend the game by saying that the series always had problems. That is like saying that food poisoning isn't so bad because you get to stay home. One way or another, you'll still sick of it by the third day.

Problem here of course is that this particular brand of poisoning has been going on for five months.

Actually, scratch that: The real problem is that when the game works right and everything is going as it should, it is a truly fun shooter and a worthy addition to the franchise.

Just a shame that it leaves such a horrid taste these days, even with most of it's errors fixed.

  • There is a certain level of anger that I have for this game. I would go into great detail and give you descriptions that would shake you to your very core, but I'll say this:

Whoever thought that Dracula (or any vampire really) should be placed in "be seen and fail" stealth sections should be fired, immediately.

They tried that kind of gameplay before: it was called Vampire Rain and it was terrible. Why did you make me relive that Konami...why? I thought you were cool!

  • Ah Garrett, old buddy old pal, how you been? Well besides the eye gouging and such I mean? Bad? Well yeah I guess being a thief isn't a walk in the park, but...what? You can't steal anything anymore? Why not? What do you mean by "loading screens?" They're stealing time from you, you say?

    Me too man, me too.

At least the Asylum is back...again.

Not entirely sure of the perfect way to ruin a series, but this one came pretty close for me. It's even worse when you realize this was supposed to bring the series back into the public eye.

I mean it did and all, but, you know, not the way we wanted.

  • Hot on the heels of what I think was the best game in the series, Black Ops 2, it would have been hard for any shooter to measure up. Ghosts, though, was a kind of two-prong attack in idiocy that threw Modern Warfare 3's insane weapon balancing problems into a blender with a story that had no heart.

I'm being harsh of course, after all, who plays these games for the story mode? Still, for a series that has been going on this long, you'd imagine one of these studios would have nailed it by now.

    Not here though; not here.

At least the PS4's overly sensitive touch pad makes it easy to see how bad I'm doing when I accidentally pop the scoreboard up for the umpteenth time.

  • Hold on, hold on, put your torches and pitchforks down!

I have reasons people, Reasons! Or caveats...whatever.

Anyway, hear me out. My problem with Titanfall, more than perhaps any other, is a balancing issue. Sure, the giant mechs (Sorry, "Titans") are fun and all plus the mechanic of calling them in is sweet but I just can't seem to find a game where I'm playing anyone near my level.

I'll give you the most recent example - I installed the game and decided to play the campaign mode first. Obviously it is that in name only since we all know that it is just a collection of multiplayer maps where someone chats in the corner of the screen while you fight.

I can get past that part, no problem at all, but it all starts to fall apart once the teams were drawn up: Me and a bunch of other low level folks, the highest being a level six, against a team of people whose lowest level player was a thirty-five.

Players would leave and be replaced but it never changed the fact that we were matched against people well above my level every time. Even leaving and finding a new campaign game provided no escape from the beatdowns.

Was the game just trying to say that because we're playing as the Militia it should be harder for us? Perhaps, but it shattered my illusion of the story progressing when we lost every single game anyway.

Make no mistake, I like the concept of the game and it's overall design aesthetic, among other things (GIANT ROBOTS PUNCHING), but one way or another it turned into a big letdown for me.

You guys having fun with it, keep it up! Me though? I just don't want to get jumped kicked by level fifties anymore.

  • I'm not going to lie to you folks, Dead Space 2 is one of my favorite games of all time, full stop. It had, to me, just the right balance of combat and atomsphere. Was DS2's last boss stupid? No doubt, but I still had a blast with the game all the same.

Dead Space 3 though? Is it possible to articulate cringing with a keyboard? Just the name makes me sad.

What was once a horror game with shooter elements turned into a military shooter where you blasted people heads off and battled aliens with blades for arms at the same time...

The games greatest sin was making what I just typed some of the most boring, predictable nonsense I've ever played. For shame DS3, for shame.

  • Hey, did you know that you can buy a booster to level up faster?

Hey, did you know you can buy a currency booster to get money faster?

Congrats, you just played Forza 5! Well, most of it anyway. Seriously folks - It has a prompt to buy those boosters on almost every single screen you come across. Loading screen? Hey, boosters are available in the shop! In the pre race screen? Press Y to buy some boosters bro!

It disgusted me. I actually stopped playing it not long after and I usually never stop midway through a racing game career. Pity because it was a fun game otherwise.

  • Before I rant fully know this: The single player portion of this game is great. The story is well told, the visuals are lovely and the x-rays are always fun to see. The multiplayer though? Well I just wonder why it's there and, more importantly, why the game tells me about it every single time I log in.

Sure, the co-op is a great idea, but competitive sniper matches? Why did you bother? Everyone just runs around with Machine guns anyway! Made me sad. Still a great game but man that was an unwelcome addition.

  • Though Bungie isn't going to be happy to hear it, this is probably going to show up on a lot of disappointment lists as the year goes on. I'm getting ahead of myself though; let's back up a little.

I hadn't really felt any desire to pick this game up until I was able to play the beta. My cousin, someone who had been pumping the game for months, had an extra key from his pre-order and let me get in on it.

At first, I was kind of let down. Sure it looked very good graphically but, when it all came down to it, the game was repetitive. I did enjoy where they seemed to be taking the story from what I saw so, assuming that they would go all out on it, I decided to pick it up.

To say it was a mistake is a little harsh but I do feel like I was slightly taken advantage of here. If you played the beta, you've played more or less all Destiny has to offer. The environments may (barely) change, but expect to see them many times and soon learn all the enemy spawn points as well.

It is not a bad game in the technical sense mind you, Destiny never having once lagged or glitched on me during my playtime to my current level of 12, but it fails to grab me like I hoped it would. The dialogue is especially bad, like it was written for a space opera that no one greenlit.

Building off this game could lead to great sequels down the line but, as it stands now, there were better places my money could have gone.

    Big Update:

Been at Level 24 for many hours now. No good loot drops, terrible story/ending and nothing fun opening up mission wise until way too late in the game to be worth trudging through. It has been upgraded from disappointment to insult. Please don't support this tripe.
