Why the Wii U will fail

I was rather disappointed in Nintendo at this years E3 because there was so much hype for the new system and the Wii U simply didn't live up to it.  Here's why in my opinion I think the Wii U will fail:

First and foremost, the Wii U is yet another gimmick by Nintendo and another gimmick that will be topped by Microsoft and Sony.  The Nintendo Wii introduced motion controls and that was a unique and new idea and it was fun (for about 3-6 months) then the gimmick of the whole motion control died down and sales flat-lined.  In come Microsoft and Sony who looked at the Nintendo Wii and said, "motion controls, hmmm, that seems neat.  Let's see what we can do."  Then the gaming world was introduced to the XBOX 360 Kinect and the Playstation Move, whose motion controls were/are vastly superior to the Wii's.  Both Microsoft and Sony were able to introduce Nintendo's new gimmick concept into their consoles without having to create a new system that was solely based on the idea of "motion control."  I imagine that execs at Microsoft and Sony were watching Nintendo's presentation at E3, like many of us, and when the Wii U was revealed I'm sure they looked at each other and said, "time to blow Nintendo out of the water with this one now too."  There is no doubt in my mind that both Microsoft and Sony will come out with much better versions of the Wii U, because the Wii U is giving them a lot of areas to be able to improve upon.  Off the top of my head they can incorporate HD, multi-touch screens on the controllers and have up to 4 or 8 players be able to use the controller instead of just one.  Come on Nintendo!  Seriously?!?

Second, in regard to the Wii U's ability to stream the game from the TV to the controller let me say this...WHO CARES?!?!  Assuming that everyone has a relatively nice screen TV, why would you want to go from the TV to a small 6.2 inch, SD screen?  Oh but wait!  No longer will you have to fight over the TV because you can just stream the game to your controller whilst the other person gets to enjoy watching a TV show!  Having been a gamer pretty much since I was able to pick up a controller, never once have I had to fight for the TV.  Honestly, when have any of us had to fight for the TV to play a game?  Especially with NIntendo claiming that with the Wii U they're aiming to please the hardcore gaming community; don't you think that being a "hardcore" gamer one of the prerequisites to that would be that we have our own TV?  Hardcore gamers don't just have their systems hooked up to a TV with a fold out chair, hardcore gamers have pimped out gaming setups.  Big screen TV, surround sound system or headphones and a gaming throne to sit comfortably in, because hey if you're going to game for hours on end, you want to make sure you're sitting in a chair that's pretty damn comfortable!  The average home has three or more TV's and you're telling me this person who needs to watch a TV show can't watch somewhere else?  The only time I can see submitting the TV to the other person would be if it's your significant other, in which case what makes you think that they're going to be fine with you playing games instead of watching "Generic Hospital Show" with them?  But that is a topic for a different discussion.  The bottom line is that being able to stream a game to the remote seems pointless unless of course the range of how far away you can be from the system goes beyond the room that it's in, which the Wii U won't be able to do.  Once again, come on Nintendo!  Seriously?!?

Third, as for the iPad, err, the controller itself; why in the world would Nintendo only allow one per console?  So one person gets to have fun with the new remote while everyone else has to kick it old school with wii remotes and nunchuks?  That just seems like such a HUGE oversight!  Especially since Nintendo (or at least the Wii) grabbed the attentions of a much younger generation.  How are you going to tell a room full of 8 year olds, "Now wait just a second there Timmy, it's Porter's turn to use the cool new controller, you have to use the old ones for now."  Come on Nintendo!  Seriously?!?

Fourth,  I was just slightly interested when all those third party developers showed major interest in the Wii U, but then I came to my senses and thought:  Let's say EA comes out with NHL 13 on the Wii U, 360, and PS3, why the hell would I get it for the Wii U?  I'm aware that the Wii U promises not to use those inane "friend codes," but I bet whatever social online support they muster up won't come close to Live or PSN.

Fifth, so the Wii U will be Nintendo's first jump into the wonderful world of HD and will be equal to or greater than the power of the 360 and the PS3.   That's great!  That's just great Nintendo!  So your new system that's due out in 2012 is rumored to be equal to or better than systems that have been out for 6 years?!?  Being 6 years behind you figure Nintendo would have been more like, "It will definitely be better than the 360 and the PS3!"  Not oh umm...maybe equal?  Not to mention that Microsoft and Sony seem to be due for next-gen consoles so when those do launch, once again Nintendo will be left in the dust.

Now I'm not just some Nintendo hater, in fact Nintendo has been my system of choice ever since I was a kid.  But now I just find myself hoping that they suffer the same fate as Sega because they can't seem to get their act together.  I mean come on how cool would it be to play Smash brothers on 360 where you can party chat with friends, check out leaderboards and actually play the game online!  Here's to hoping that this is the beginning of that for Nintendo.

As long as they make Mario, Zelda, Metroid, and Pikmin games for it I'm already sold.

I'm not sure I entirely agree with your arguments and the comments show that some of your analysis misses the mark. But to outright and wish them failure is pointless. I bought a Wii, enjoyed it and then got rid of it. Sure I wasn't impressed that the games released were not appealing to me, but they must have been appealing to someone. And that in and of itself is why Nintendo is successful. All of your arguments are geared toward the hardcore market which small, picky and is generally only happy with COD clones. I don't plan on getting a Wii U. This may change depending on if they cater to my needs as a gamer. If they don't, they will cater to someone else's and therefore they should not fail.

If you're going to be a zealot, hide it better. No one's going to pay attention otherwise.

lol i never read but you know what i am getting sick of these noob gamers these days assuming they are queen of shevas ,

first of all , nintendo did exactly what everyone cried for -high definition , now they still cry, it never ceases, no matter what nintendo does you still complain , ,

2nd of all , i guess all the little kids /or younger gamers have to play call of duty gta or 100-200 generic fpses because if nintendo released mario party 4 times , it be a crime , thats another thing why should gamers suffer because a few people want online play , they want to take away split screen , from those who want to use it , and slap online forcing it down our throats,

3rd the price, the more people complain about 599,99 -i heard this alot at ps3 well you know what you guys have no one else to blame but your selfs because you guys are the ones showing you want this , - you want your shiney coated graphics over good ol fun gameplay, you want bluray players and dvd players , and now you want youtube face book? by the time every little crybaby is done, we might as well just use the pc for gaming , cause it does all of those things! alot more better ,

and 4th another thing im sick of hearing about is when will nintendo allow for dlc really? forget dlc, im through with paying 15 bucks for 5 measly maps and you want nintendo to follow in their foot steps ya stick to your xbox then because people who want full games out of the box shall get those full games without paying 15 dollars just to have what ever it is the developer locked on the disc, back then we earned that for free, why cant we just go back to that

ill tell you why its people like the tc,

making topics like this every day ,, no matter what system , they gotta complain about somthing , for instance ps3

--- wheres my backwards compatibility? why you remove install other os,

xbox 360 --- why do i gotta pay this and that why does it not have blu-ray , seriously gamers these days are pushing it , asking for far to much ,

without taking anything in consideration -1 the market is bad, there is no room for 600 dollar consoles, and since this is nintendo wii u we are mainly talking about i think you definatelly should take the fact that nintendo is aiming at everbody not just the ones who play garbage like call of duty , kids do not have money , so if nintendo released it at 600 yes it will fail ,

so thank you i think wii u is fine the way it is!

nintendo has been here 20 yrs without a problem and now you wanna claim itll fail , well shame on you , because sony once opon a time was said ---- ps3 failed remember that ,

ya what ever happened?

this is the truth according to the sales numbers no system failed

nintendo ds-150+million

nintendo wii -90 million

psp -71 million

xbox 360 55 million

ps3- 52 million ,

how many is 52 million? it may not be more then competition but hey it sure as heck is not a failure

when sega only sold 10 million dreamcast and saturns thats what i call failure

if your system fails to sell 20 million or more , its a failure as you can see nintendo was never in that position ,

what 'good' games have come out for kinect or move?  I haven't seen any, at least not any that are pushing serious sells for the the hardware required... maybe Dance Central, but that's about it.

Also, the Wii U can support another controller... they just don't package it with 2 because it would cost too much.

I don't think I would buy a Wii U, but I also don't think that it is for me... or obviously for you... but that doesn't mean it won't sell really really well.  I think we have to wait till next year to see what sort of innovative ideas come out from the software developers...

Even if the Wii U sells a 5th of the sales they saw from the Wii, it will still be a huge success.

Nintendo at this point can't really fail. Sorry to say it..

Hahaha, the sales died down. That was so much to read I kinda fell asleep in the process. One, the name is hilarious and I think is pretty neat what they do. Because they try to make it different, and I found interesting to be honest :)

In fact. When Kinect was coming out, I can rest assured that you had the same opinion, when the PS3 move came out, I can rest assured you had the same opinion, hell Im sure you had the same opinion when the 3DS was featured on last years E3. If the sales die down is not because of a console costing a wooping £400 (UK) which also includes games on the bundle or because it didn't live to your expectations. Is because the stupid economy don't allow people to be able to get what they want, with job losses and not being able to find work. Trust me I been there.

I didn't watch the E3 because I didn't have any internet at the time but when my fiancé explained me what he saw I think it was pretty good. wiiuwiiuwiiuwiiu. Well jokes aside. I'm pretty sure you will be one of those (lucky ones) in the queue trying to get one when it comes to it, so I'm not fussed :)

Also NINTENDO never intended to create a console for graphics, it was made for pure entertainment and they live up to the nostalgia. They created for me one of the best games I ever played and I never going to replace my love for Zelda and other games alike. Now they are more diverse, who can blame Nintendo for trying?. What I like about Nintendo is while Xbox 360 and PS3 where fighting on who is the best graphically, or when it came to a console that can heat up the whole house better, who has the best "new generation console", Nintendo was just always in their element doing what they do best, is trying to do something different from them. =) I rest my case and thank you for the post :)

Each to their own :)

I've had to fight for the TV, because one TV for 3 people. Most families, who are Nintendo's core market for the wii, are in the same situation.

They're attempting to please both sides, the casual with the gimmicks of the controler, and those who are already gaming fans with the fact that it has buttons and analogue sticks, and they can just make some kickass games ignoring the extremities of the controller. The Wii U looked cool enough, it all comes down to the games.

@joshth: Graphics won't be a problem. The Wii U will support 1080p HD and have you seen Zelda for it? It looks fantastic.

I stopped reading right here: "gimmick of the whole motion control died down and sales flat-lined."

If you're going to call 80+ million hardware units sold and 100+ million software units sold "flat-lined" you may consider looking up the definition of the term.

so to your first paragraph: I don't see how Sony and Microsoft "blew Nintendo out of the water".  Is there motion controls much better? Yes of course because they were made years later, I would be shocked if they weren't better.  Your point in this paragraph seems to be that Microsoft and Sony will continue to copy Nintendos innovative ideas which while they will have the better tech, the majority of sales will go to nintendo like it did for motion controls, considering that people will get it with nintendo and then ask themselves "Why would I get this again?"

To your second: Your not totally wrong here, it isn't the wiiU's best feature to be sure.  But imagine your in the middle of a level, and your favorite TV show comes on, now you can continue finishing the level, while watching the show.  Again I see your point, though I wouldn't call it useful

Third: Has that been confirmed yet?  What  I heard is that they were only showing one controller for now because they merely wanted to show off what you can do with one for now.  Besides there is lots of cool things you can do with a simple 1 new controller and other wii remotes combos.

Fourth: A valid point

Fifth: Graphics never was or likely ever will be Nintendos strong point.  And honestly if your trying to make the argument that Graphics is what makes a game or console, your wrong.  Innovation and creativity is what does it.

Just thought I'd make a counter argument.
