My Favorite Gameboy Games

The Gameboy was amazing. It was the first system that was mine. All mine.

It wasn't my best friend Joey's SNES.

It wasn't my uncle Buck's Genesis. (yes I have an uncle Buck)

It was mine.

I cherished this handheld. Even after I obtained the aforementioned consoles not soon after getting the GB, did I find myself staying up till horrific hours of the night playing the big grey brick. A lot of these games shaped my gaming interest early on. There's no reason to list them numerically because they've all affected me in different ways. One or two I wouldn't even consider good anymore.

So without further adieu, here are my favorite games for the Nintendo Gameboy.

List items

  • The best handheld platformer in my opinion. The goal of Wario Land is simple: Get money. Get Paid.

The controls are a tad floaty and it has one of those jumps where holding up makes you go much higher than you need, but the shoulder dash and enemy throwing offer great fun and unique was to deal with situations(and get the most gold)

I have acquired the best possible ending many times in my life. I played it when I was 7 and I still play it to this day.

    Wario Land for lyfe.

  • Came with my Gameboy. It's Tetris. Your grandma plays Tetris, ask her if you don't know.

  • I found this game on the schoolyard in 1996. I still, to this day, can't beat it. You control a SPACE TANK and enter caves where the game becomes a first person dungeon crawler view similar to the Eye of the Beholder series. I've never been able to tell if the game sucks or if I just suck at playing it. Nevertheless, I will still at some point in the future turn this game on and try to understand it and once more, go to bed unsatisfied.

  • The game that changed me. That changed us. That's right, I'm talking about you. If you were there then you know. Pokemon was king of the world.

  • I really have a hard time enjoying the Metroid games. The originals, Prime, Other M(yuck).

I always found Metroid 2 enjoyable though. It felt better than the first control-wise and I didn't seem to get lost as much. Not exactly one of my favorite games of all time, but it was definitely a memorable title for me.

  • This blew my mind back in the day! Donkey Kong Country?! On the Gameboy!? The future is now! How could it get any better than this?!

GBA port sent this mother fucker packing. You will always have a place in my heart DKL, but you are beyond unplayable now and you will only collect dust until I do so myself.

  • This is the greatest Pokemon game there is. And yes, it can be played on the original grey brick Gameboys so it counts. This game dropped right at the peak of my Pokemon obsession. The thought of new Pokemon was mind blowing. The new region: Johto, mystified us all. I can't even begin to tell you how many hours I've sunk into this game in my life. Pokemon will never be as amazing or fun to me as this game was. I just recently replaced the battery in my old cartridge so it will save again. Heck, I'm probably gonna play some after I finish writing this!

  • One of the pinnacles of handheld gaming. Link's Awakening is pure adventure. I used to hike out to remote locations in my town to play this game just so I could get more in touch with the settings while I played. It captured my imagination and got me hooked on my favorite series. Link's Awakening must be played by all who love video games.
