Best of 2008

In 2008, I played several videogames. These are my ten favorite.

List items

  • The (almost only) reason to own a Playstation 3. Total fan service, great gameplay, beautiful visuals, superb game.

  • Fun and satisfying combat with a great atmosphere and UI, both of which highlights the game's superb presentation. A bit too video game-centric with the way the quests are handled and the train serves as the hub.

  • I could not get past level 2 (well, 3) without guides, so it says a lot that despite needing to have my hand held through the majority of the game, I'm always happy to return to Braid. The story makes pretentious look humble, but that it can entirely bypassed without ruining the twist ending is greatly appreciated.

  • My first Civ game and I loved it.

  • Better than its predecessor in every way and allowed you to play all of its songs. Spent more time playing this than any other game in 2008.

  • Lots of cut corners that frustrate me, but the journey was pleasant and there were a lot of collectibles.

  • The story is World War 2 as told by 12-year olds. The gameplay, however, is a great mix of real-time and turn-based strategy and shooting.

  • I only made it to act 3, but horde mode (I think that's what it's called) was great fun.

  • Giant fire breathing ants still inspire fear in me.

  • The Grand Theft Auto series isn't my cup of tea, but it's difficult to deny the superb design of GTA IV. As with the rest of the series, eventually I hit a mission that led me to give up on the game, and if I can't enjoy a game through to completion, I can't rank it very high, but this is the best game in the series to date.
