1. Final Fantasy IV
Completed the DS version in November of '09. Explored the last dungeon thoroughly before defeating Zeromus. Defeated Bahamut, Asura, Leviathan, Dark Bahamut, White Dragon, Lunasaur, Plague and Ogopogo. |
2. Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers
Completed in October 09 with a score of 333. Used a faq a couple times when I got stuck. Playing this game reminded me both of how good adventure games can be at storytelling and how completely frustrating they can get. Most of the puzzles felt fair to me, but there were a couple of maddening times when I thought, "I'm supposed to know to do THAT??". I guess it helps to put the game in perspective and to remember that Sierra made lots of money charging for a hint line. All said, Gabriel Knight does a great job of immersing you in New Orleans with beautiful artwork, varied music and great characters. I enjoyed the historical aspects of the game more than the fantasy, but it was an enjoyable ride nonetheless. |

3. Mirror's Edge
Completed all three difficulty levels on the Xbox 360 version in October of 09. Got most of the achievements accept some of the speed runs and the highest Time Trial achievement. I'd like to revisit this again if the DLC goes on sale. Despite the flawed combat and inconsistent cutscenes, I had a great time with Mirror's Edge. I really like the art style and music in the game and the sensation of running is like no other game I've played. It feels very rewarding when you find a faster route to your destination or clear another star in the time trials. |
4. Sid Meier's Civilization Revolution
Completed the DS version in October of 09. Won victories on every difficulty level. Won each of the four victory types at least once. Played many but not all of the extra scenarios. This was my first experience with Civilization and I enjoyed it a lot, although it didn't feel challenging until I reached the top two difficulties. Deity was very challenging and forced me to manage every aspect of my cities carefully, which exposed me to more of the game's depth. I was a little disappointed that most of the unit types look the same, no matter your civilization (at least in the DS version) and it was weird seeing an early unit like a pikeman take down an advanced unit like a fighter pilot, but I can see how that might be necessary for the game balance. |
5. Eternal Sonata
Completed in October 09. Played through twice to get all of the achievements. I liked the art style a lot in this game. Most of the outdoor environments look great. I didn't like the style of the cities as much, but that's a minor thing. The story is certainly original, but unfortunately the pacing is reaaaally slow. It feels like there's a long pause after almost every line of dialogue. Some of the voice acting is annoying, too, but you can turn on the Japanese voices if you want. Overall, the beautiful art, Chopin's music and some unique combat mechanics made it a fun time. |
6. Blood Plasma Pak
Completed in October 09 on Normal (Lightly Broiled) difficulty. Monolith definitely upped the difficulty in this expansion. There are some tough fights towards the end and the new enemy types require different tactics. Most of the new enemies are just variations on the basic priest types, but the mini-Calebs are a unique and funny addition. The level designs are decent, but I didn't like how much back-tracking I had to do. I preferred the level design in the Cryptic Passage expansion. The levels in Cryptic passage felt more distinct and made more sense architecturally. |
7. Cryptic Passage for Blood
Completed in October of 09 on Normal (Lightly Broiled) difficulty. Used an faq on the Gothic Library level when I couldn't find the way to proceed. The button was too well hidden, in my opinion. Overall, I enjoyed this expansion. Each level is set in a unique location, and many of them are more interesting than the original Blood levels. I liked the Opera house, Steamboat and mountain pass levels in particular. |

8. Blood
Completed the four episodes of the original game in September 09 on Normal (Lightly Broiled) difficulty. The learning curve felt steep to me initially, since the enemies can kill you quickly, but once I learned how to use the weapons effectively and got more of them, the game felt easier. Being able to save at any point helps a lot, of course. I had trouble finding the exit in some levels, but I didn't resort to a faq. I didn't expect to like this game much, I remember disliking the magazine ads for Blood in the 90s because they were so excessively gory. True to the ads, there is a lot of over-the-top violence in this game. However, now that the game is dated, the flatness of the games 2D sprites make it feel cartoony and almost laughable. The weapons in the game are creative and well-balanced. Most have a secondary fire mode and only one (the pitchfork) is truly useless. The flare gun you find in the first level of the game can still be effective at the end of the game. It's great for hitting far-away enemies or creating a big explosion that lights things on fire. The most effective weapon for a given situation constantly changes based on the environment and enemies you're facing. |
9. Ultima II: Revenge of the Enchantress
Completed in September of 09 using a faq. I would not recommend this game to anyone. I enjoyed it much less than the first Ultima and found most of the new additions annoying or unnecessary. The only aspect I felt was an improvement over the original was the final battle, which was more complex. There's little reason to explore the dungeons in the game, since it takes lots of health and you're safer staying in a boat, once you get one. I didn't visit any of the other planets in the game exept planet X because landing your space ship is ridiculously hard to do without dying and you can't save your game on any planet except Earth. |
10. Ultima I: The First Age of Darkness
Completed the DOS version in September 09 using a faq. People who completed this game without a guide must have been very patient and/or determined. The limited text and open world make it hard to figure out what you're supposed to do. That said, the objectives are clearer than in Ultima ii. |
11. The World Ends With You
Completed in August 09. There seems to be quite a bit of replay value to this game, with more story and items to unlock after you finish. Controlling characters on two screens at the same time felt difficult for most of the game, but I still enjoyed the game mechanics and the crazy characters. |
12. Dragon Quest Heroes: Rocket Slime
Completed in August 09. Saved all the slimes and completed all of the tank battles. The gameplay is pretty simple, but there is a lot of charm to the characters and it always feels like you are finding new characters and things. |
13. Star Wars: The Force Unleashed
Completed in August of 09 on the 360. Unlocked all available achievements at the time. Some of the force powers, like force push, are pretty crazy once you level them all the way up. |
14. Ninja Gaiden II
Completed in July 09 on Path of the Acolyte. The game felt easier to me than Ninja Gaiden Black, but that might be due to the fact that NJB made me better at action games. The plot and cut scenes are ridiculous but fun. |
15. Naruto: Path of the Ninja
Completed in June of 09. Found most of the items in the game. Didn't use Neji or Shikamaru much. The storyline sticks pretty close to the anime, but it probably feels like a disjointed mess if you aren't familiar with the source material. |
16. Ninja Gaiden: Dragon Sword
Completed on Normal difficulty, May 09. I found the game much shorter and easier than Ninja Gaiden for Xbox. Most of the bosses weren't too difficult and it felt like the game auto-blocked a lot of attacks. I mostly used the Divine Life Ninpo and only used the other Ninpo for solving puzzles. |
17. Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening
Completed in May 09 on Normal difficulty. Used the Trickster style almost exclusively and relied a lot on Rebellion, although I used all of the different weapons at various times and beat Vergil with Beowulf. DMC 3 is definitely harder than the first two games and close to the difficulty of games like Viewtiful Joe and Ninja Gaiden. However, careful item usage makes boss fights easier and the end of the game wasn't as hard as I expected it to be. The game feels very cinematic and over-the-top, which is fun if you don't take it too seriously. |
18. Devil May Cry 2
Completed Dante and Lucia's storylines on Normal difficulty in May '09. I found the game far easier than the first – I only died once or twice. Most bosses can be defeated by shooting at them from a distance. Playing as Lucia was more fun than Dante, but it didn't make up for the game's terrible storyline, repetitive gameplay and insignificant customization options. |
19. Devil May Cry
Completed on Normal difficulty in April 09. Completed two or three secret missions. Mostly used the sword Alastor. I found the first couple boss battles highly challenging, but after leveling up Dante and gaining the grenade launcher, the game felt much easier. It was fun throughout, however, and it's probably my favorite DMC game. |
20. God of War II
Completed on Spartan (Normal) difficulty in March 09. Didn't use the alternate weapons much. Leveled up the Atlas Quake all the way, which was a big help in the final battles. Found one of six urns. The unlockable "Cod of War" costume is hilarious. |
21. God of War
in early 09 on Normal difficulty except the last fight. Fun game with a great setting and crazy finishing moves. Kratos makes me think of an angry toddler who runs around yelling "I'M SO ANGRY!!". But maybe that's just me. |
22. Viewtiful Joe
Completed on Adult mode on the PS2 in 09. One of the toughest games I've completed. I was frustrated that the game makes you repeat four previously completed boss fights in a row with no save or continue points. That said, the bosses are a lot of fun. Fire Leo is one of the toughest bosses I've faced. I played a bit as Dante and Sylvia after unlocking their storylines. The new storylines and moves definitely add some replay value, but it wasn't enough to make me want to play all the way through again. |
23. Chromehounds
Completed in February of 09. I like the customization options in this game, but most of the default hounds you get in the single player campaign do the job just fine. Tried multiplayer, which has some interesting features, but I had a hard time finding games. Built some custom hounds, but nothing I was very fond of. Most of them looked ridiculous. |
24. Abuse
Completed in late 08. The gameplay gets repetitive and there aren't any real boss fights or impressive set pieces, but the action in this game is a lot of fun. |
25. Prey
Completed on Normal difficulty in October of 08. I liked that this game had Native Americans as protagonists, but I wasn't very interested in the main character. The game is very forgiving, since you never really die, you just go to the spirit world for a while. Some of the weapons and puzzles were interesting, but nothing mind blowing. |
26. Just Cause
Completed on 360 in August of 08. Got all achievements. The story didn't do much for me (I was hoping it might have a more interesting political message) but the stunts were still a lot of fun and the islands look great. |
27. Castle of Dr. Brain
Completed in 08. Got a score of 154 points. Some challenging puzzles and great personality, but not much replay value. |
28. Chrono Trigger
Completed in 08. Completed it twice to get the best ending. Loved the art style and personality of this game. There are some great boss fights and the lack of random encounters was nice. |
29. Metal Slug: Super Vehicle - 001
Completed in 08. Unlimited continues made this a quick but fun play on Gametap. |
30. Metal Slug 2: Super Vehicle - 001/II
Completed in 08. Unlimited continues made this a quick but fun play on Gametap. And it was free! |
31. Space Megaforce |
32. Super Nova |
33. Super R-Type |
34. Diablo
Completed using the rogue. Mostly used a bow, but switched to a sword to defeat Diablo. I had a great time with Diablo, though I did get tired of all the clicking. The loot system and random dungeons are fun, although I think Diablo gets more credit for these features than it should, since they've been part of computer games since at least the eighties. Diablo did a good job of modernizing them (for the time) and making the combat real-time. |
35. Final Fantasy VII
Completed the PS version. Unlocked all characters. Used Cloud, Vincent and Cid to defeat Sephiroth. Didn't defeat optional WEAPONS or get all ultimate weapons. Didn't breed Chocobos. |
36. Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars
Mostly used Bowser and Peach (plus Mario, of course). Didn't find all the hidden boxes or the cameos. I had a lot of fun with this game. It captures a lot of the fun of Mario's world, but in a totally new format. The story was simple, but good and there are lots of unique characters. I'd like to play more Mario RPGs in the future. |
37. Soul Blazer
I enjoyed how the characters in towns get unlocked as you play. It makes backtracking feel less annoying. A fun game, but it doesn't compare to Zelda. |
38. Alien Vs. Predator
completed the SNES version I wouldn't recommend this game to anyone. |
39. Mercenaries: Playground of Destruction
I played about half of the game as Jennifer before my save file got corrupted and I had to start over. Then I played the entire game as Mattias. Had a lot of problems with the game locking up due, I assume, to the emulation on the 360. Still had a lot of fun with the game, though. |
40. Gears of War
Completed around 2006 on Casual difficulty. Almost completed it again on Insane, but couldn't kill the last boss. GRRRRRR. All around great game. |
41. Fable
Completed in 04 or 05. Used quite a bit of magic. Great game, even if it was a bit over-hyped. |
42. Myth II: Soulblighter
Completed in the late 90s. A great sequel with better graphics and some fun new unit types. I didn't feel as attached to the characters as I did in the first game, though (not because of story-telling, just because I wanted to keep them alive in the first game). |
43. Myth: The Fallen Lords
Completed in the late 90s. This was one of my favorite games of the 90s I don't think I've played anything quite like it to this day. |
44. Betrayal at Krondor
Completed the CD-ROM version in the mid 90s. One of my favorite RPGs of all time. I loved how the book format of the story blends with the gameplay. The world is enormous and fun to explore. This was my first meaty RPG experience. |
45. Relentless: Twinsen's Adventure
Completed the PC version in the nineties. I remember liking the quirky art style. |
46. Warcraft: Orcs & Humans
Completed in 1994 as both orcs and humans. I played a demo of this game that came with PC Magazine and decided to buy it when it came out. It was a great RTS experience, which was a hot new thing at the time. |
47. Stellar 7
Completed the CD-ROM version in the 90s. I enjoyed it, but not as much as Nova 9. |
48. Out of This World
Completed the PC version in the 90s. At the time the graphics and animation were amazing. I'm still impressed how much story it told with little or no dialogue. |
49. Nova 9: Return of Gir Draxon
Completed on PC in the 90s before Stellar 7 (the first game). This game was very challenging because you had to complete it all in one sitting and some of the bosses were tough. I enjoyed it a lot at the time, though. |
50. King's Quest V: Absence Makes the Heart Go Yonder
Completed in the mid 90s. Enjoyed the game, but not as much as KQ III, IV and VI. |
