Game of the Year 2014

Trying to sort out of my favorite games from this year, though I still have a few to finish or even start. Overall I was pretty disappointed with this year. Dragon Age, my #1 game was great, but had a lot of flaws/bugs and nearing the end of it I grew tired of playing it. It had too much content. Even my most disappointing game, Destiny, cracked my top 10 because even though I wanted it to be much more, I liked my time with it. A few of my runners up may move up to my final list, I just haven't beaten or spent enough time with some of them yet.

I hope 2015 ends up being better.

Runners up: The Walking Dead: Season Two, Infamous: Second Son, Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, Titanfall, Nidhogg, South Park: The Stick of Truth, Divinity: Original Sin, Wolfenstein: The New Order, Bravely Default, Assassin's Creed: Unity

List items

  • I love Bioware games and I always will. The characters, writing, music and story of this game are some of the best they have ever done. However, the game could have been paced better and been a tighter experience like Mass Effect 2.

  • My first real Dark Souls game. I loved its world and the time I spent with it. I'm looking forward to Bloodbourne.

  • Persona is a series dear to my heart and this game is full of fan service for folks like me. It turned me on to the Etrian Odyssey style of combat as well.

  • My favorite Telltale game from this year, The Wolf Among Us had some pacing problems that it made up for by style and atmosphere.

  • I haven't beaten Shadow of Mordor yet but it still takes #5. I love what this game does and I can't wait to go back to it.

  • The game I lost a ton of time to here and there. I never played the original release but Curtain Call made me love FF music even more and has me hankering to play through them. It's main issue lies with its third, hardest difficulty. That last one is way too hard and it's not fun.

  • My podcast game of the year. Diablo 3 has really turned around and part of that is thanks to Reaper of Souls.

  • This game is a dark hole where time goes. I still haven't completely fallen down the rabbit hole but this game is cute and charming and a good time waster, even if it is a bit simplistic. It makes up for that with a ton of content.

  • This games oozes style and but ultimately was disappointing compared to Bastion.

  • A game I love to hate. I really like the foundation of Destiny and everything feels solid, but they screwed up the end-game progression and a lack of content really hampers the experience. I think Bungie will fix it in time though, Destiny 2 is going to really shine.
