Impressive

Was looking around on youtube and came across this video. Watched the whole thing and was really impressed, even though I didn't recognise the vast majority of the music pieces. I thought the idea was awesome and well done to whoever made it... must've taken literally ages!

Black Ops

08/11/2010

Call of Duty: Black Ops just came out and I'm at home for a few days, leaving all my gaming at my house near university. I really want to be completing old games that I've not finished yet but Borderlands is being put on hold for a bit. Once I'm back at uni, I'll give the Black Ops campaign a playthrough or two on various difficulties and play multiplayer for a while, then get back to Borderlands.

Which brings me to the multiplayer issues - every now and then I get a few second periods of lock up, sometimes it happens rarely, sometimes every 5 seconds making multiplayer games unplayable. Other people say they get the same issue but I seem to witness the lags more often - hopefully it's not due to my computer since I built it new recently, and hopefully it's not the internet because that has enough problems with it being capped to 0.1 Mbps half the time... maybe it'll be patched and fixed soon.

Overall from what I've seen from a few hours of Black Ops multiplayer (haven't touched the campaign yet), it plays pretty similarly to Modern Warfare 2. The maps seem good, but I haven't yet played enough to tell whether they actually are well designed or I just haven't played them to death yet. In terms of matchmaking, despite GameServers.com being the only providers of dedicated servers, at least there are some. Hopefully the lag everyone was raging about while playing online yesterday was just a day 1 issue and will disappear over time and through patching.

Games I must beat - Borderlands

08/11/2010

Recently I've been thinking through the games I own and have realised I only end up completing the main story of a small proportion of them. I have so many games that remain unfinished after so few hours have been put into them. Therefore I've decided to start replaying games I already own before I buy many more. The first game on the list of games which I must beat is Borderlands.

Borderlands really grabbed my attention back in 2009 on its release. I picked up the PC retail copy and played probably around 10 hours of it, even managing to get into some multiplayer despite the connection issues faced. The game has a great cartoon-like art style that looks really good, and as someone very interested in role-playing games for their character progression and customisation of equipment, Borderlands was an obvious choice with its shoot 'n' loot style. For some reason I ceased playing the game as something else likely attracted my attention, so Borderlands was placed back on the shelf, not to be played for almost a year.

This past week I've picked up Borderlands again and have chosen to play as Mordecai, acting either as a covert sniper aiming for accurate headshots, or a crazy explosive-revolver wielding lunatic, running into the heat of battle relying health regen from killing enemies one by one. I quickly remembered what I loved about the game, with its range of hundreds of different guns, and can see myself playing multiple playthroughs as the various characters available. I expect I'll also repurchase the game in Game of the Year format for PC to check out the 4 DLC packs, working out much cheaper than expanding my current game with DLC.

I'm taking a break from Borderlands for a while whilst I'm at home, leaving all my games at my university house. Once I'm back I'll be playing through the Call of Duty: Black Ops campaign and multiplayer for a while. After some Black Ops I'll definitely be picking up Borderlands again to finish it, and I'm going to order a copy of Borderlands: Game of the Year to get access to the 4 DLC packs for extra content for an awesome game.

Borderlands retail versions have no CD-keys which sucks since achievements have been released for the Steam version. The GOTY edition is on special offer right now on Steam (with 25% off) at £29.99 but that's still almost double the price tag on the retail copy. I expect I'll wait until Christmas - Steam is very likely to have it on sale then, since there's a sale at every opportunity - and pick up the GOTY edition from Steam. I really like Borderlands and am a little bit of an achievement whore, so I hope there's a greater price reduction around Christmas.

In the mean time, I still have plenty of games that remain unfinished, plus I got Call of Duty: Black Ops - I said I wouldn't be buying new games until I finished some old ones, but I got it mainly for the multiplayer which people I know are playing constantly right now, making it much more enjoyable.
