I never was a subscriber of this site, but I can't really complain. I understand the need for the premium content, these guys need to be rewarded for their work and while getting fan adoration at conventions and mails of goodies are great, those are not enough to support their livelihoods, especially near San Francisco. And because sometimes I forget to turn off Adblock on the site. I am currently perfectly happy and thankful for the work Giantbomb is putting in. Go to Youtube or Twitch and you could see pretty extensive examples of 'Premium' content that is not being put down or flagged for copyright because they have a sense of not punishing users for seeking out content and further exposure. Of course, I appreciate that too, while feeling a bit bad that I need to become a subscriber already.
I sometimes go back and watch the Endurance Runs (also accessible) and while I do regard them as some sort of conceptual feature that they got somewhat in over their heads in, I appreciate them for their timeless quality. Jeff could have been more enthusiastic and not write off something right away at first impressions, but I think that is his nature to be jaded and skeptical. Who wouldn't when one has been part of an industry more or less consumed with being unwitting mouthpieces for those that can dispense with money and kickbacks? But when he gets right on to the nitty gritty part of being a critic, he gives out 5 and 4 stars to games like GTA V and Titanfall under well reasoned, thoughtful, and well reviewed editorial. Patrick, while at first took me a while to get used to, is providing new content and innovative spin to the breadth of all things game related and I appreciate his certain outlook on things. If I don't agree, now I simply skip to whatever he has to say about next, if I don't feel like viewing his content, I just don't click the article. He in my opinion is the hardest working staff member on the crew and that merits a lot of respect.
I don't know how to put this, but it hasn't even been a year since Ryan's tragic passing, and I think the entire site had to take some time to adjust and even begin to try to continue, as filling his spot would be a gargantuan task if not impossible. Jeff had to take the majority of the workload that Ryan was responsible for, such as hosting podcasts and UPFs. All the other guys had to step up to get this site transition into normal day to day operation however difficult it would've been and the process probably is still long ways from being able to capture that perfect chemistry the site exuded. Vinny began to appear in more Quicklooks and how he developed into another unique and personable character able to hold his own in a lot of on-screen activities and roles is amazing to behold. Drew began to be involved more as well, and his eclectic tastes in racing and flight sims probably only scratch the surface of what he can contribute. Now, they are looking for some new personalities to join the crew and I'm pretty excited by who he or she will be. The process isn't done, and if even a lurker and a complete stranger like me feels the pangs of sadness when the person who made this site what it is can't be here with us anymore, I'm certain his absence resonates that much in these guys trying to cope in their efforts to return to some semblance of normalcy.
However in the end, I feel that the site had grown in ways and taken a lot of positive steps, as it continues to provide some new and interesting features while old mainstays like Quicklooks and Bombcast remain as entertaining and fresh as ever (and accessible). I am quite content with the way the site is, and perhaps those who have soured on the site could get on with their lives and move on and only periodically check up on it. And I am sure some of you will soon find yourself fall in love with the site over again, like I did.
