The Playstation Zeitgeist Episode 11: Ponderings, And Homebrewing

Here are the games I'm planning to get (I already have Valkria)  
 

  • Super Street Fighter 4 (It was announced really quickly)
  • UFC 2009 (Yukes should stick with Dana's Boys)
  • GT5 (Come on, I know it will not have the firebird until DLC time but hey - DAMAGE - and not the sucky kind and not "The Player should had died Burnout damage)
  • BlazBlue (Whatever new version coming out)
  • Star Ocean 4 International (PS3) (Ok, This is the Enterprise version of the franchise and some say it got worse after a certain point - but Im a completist) 
  • DMC4 (duh)
  • Blitz The League (liked the first game)
  • NBA The Show (Sony has gotten better with the Baseball Game and the Basketball game is damn close)
  • Uncharted 1 and 2 
  • Heavenly Sword 
  • Folklore (Wanted to buy it because of the Japanese advert way back when)
  • Ratchet and Clank (And the PSP version)
  • Midnight Club LA (Played the other versions)
  • Yakuza 3 (Better than GTA4 ever was)
  • GTA4 (when they have all of the DLC the 360 has)
  • Soul Caliber 4
  • Other games such as White Knight Chronicles 1, Tekken 6, God of War Three etc
 
On the PSP side: 
 
  • GTP (60 Frames, 800 cars and I hear you transfer data from there to GT5! What's not to like)
  • MGS Peace Walker: When Naked Snake becomes the bad guy.
  • Valkria 2 (when ever its ready)
  • That Bancho game what ever its called
  • Holy Badman (Dead Penguins are the new Cool Cats)
  • Patapon (UK Version)
  • Soul Caliber Broken Destiny (and sadly we cannot take Kratos to 4)
  • Persona and Persona 3 (the first game back in 96 was done in the Dawson's Creek style - in someways it made it more authentic and in other-ways it fell flat)
  • Other such games from Level 5, that will take years to translate...

 
That will take awhile for the PS3 side to get to 25 games (I have 30 something on the PS2 side) and more than I have for any version of the Gameboy on the PSP side (I have 15 now to add GTP later) Im gonna have to keep them in a safe place nobody will find them if you believe the conspiracies out on the net...
 
As for the WII... What did i tell yall? Its a damn mess I hear. Some choice info: 
  

System Menu 4.2 seems to be bricking non-HBCed Wiis. It doesn't matter whether you've ever installed the Homebrew Channel or hacked your Wii, people who have never even heard of HBC are having these issues.

The problem appears to lie with an incredibly shoddily programmed update to boot2 of the Wii. boot2 is basically the area that "starts up" the Wii. According to the people who have developed HBC, the code for Nintendo's updated boot2 is prone to making write errors, therefore making the possibility of bricking your Wii extremely high, whether or not you have ever hacked or modified your Wii.

So if I'm to understand their customer service comments correctly, bricking modified Wii's is now policy rather than an unintentional but acceptable coincidence?
It's not a policy. They are just saying that it isn't their problem. The same thing as if you put your console near an edge and it dropped to the floor and broke. I don't blame them on that part. Punishing the legitimate users is something unacceptable, but they are now compensating for that too.

The really simple version is that ECC is extra bits that can be used to get a good, error-free read even if some of the data is errored somehow.

All forms of storage—Flash, disk, whatever—have a certain tolerable amount of errors. Makes them cheaper since they don't have to junk so much in manufacturing. Using various strategies like bad block remapping and ECC, they then present a certain amount of reliable storage to the rest of the system.

As I understand it, the Nintendo update code wasn't doing ECC properly. So if your boot2 area had errors, the update was more likely to fail than with code that did write out the ECC bits properly. So, if there was some problem reading that area back, boot2 would come back corrupted.    

Now im not the greatest Computer Wiz out there, but when a thing need to "Start Up" said system - to prevent homebrew or pirates, fails because the homebrewers realized that thing used to start the system is "fucked already and we don't even touch it" - and then for that same company to go and fix a problem that isnt the cause of the issue - and have it mess up non - HBC systems reeks of very bad planning. There are more complicated issues with this and you should check (not that I condone this) the many boards and forums that deal with such things. 
 
Its proves a point I have. Ninty had us, but they didn't get us. Sony has recovered (50,000 for 4 weeks straight is still nothing to sneeze at in Japan) 360 has lower prices and is setting up Jasper (a bit too late though). This should be news right now - but give it 2 weeks -  the media is always late on these things.  
 
But why in gods name Ninty would create a boot up system that bricks the system during an update. They had over 30 - 50 some updates during the Wii's life span with no problems. As soon as they see a chance to hurt the sons of bitch pirates... they cant even do that right. 
 
So folks, you mean to tell me your girlfriends bought a system with 7 year old tech - for 261 bucks (ecomany of scale folks), sells 2.5 million during the bubble and now some of those wii's have the chance to brick? 
 
Sounds like a bad investment to me. Not unlike how the media makes a mockery of your GF's.  
 
But then again, maybe they will get it and realize Bayonetta and games like it wern't the bad boys or girls of Video Games. 
 
Maybe the bad boys, acted like the good guys - in order to save something they lost over the decade. Maybe Endgame was always right about the Wii and we are just getting to the truth.

Look, SDF; stop this nonsense. Who ever posting that crap not aimed at Wall Street and Foggy Bottom are stupid fucks. I thought we were bigger than some rumor from some transplanted dude over at SCEJ. Gaf is making fun of yall and over at the Bomb everybody is confused.  
 
I dont know that EA did this. I dont know If they told Sony they needed all of EA's PS3 games to have cross chat or no one else has. Im hoping there is a work around. Im gonna apologize to EA for now since they didnt need there kiddies seeing that. There is one thing about not being generic and having a generic life style - but anger misdirected is a dangerous thing. 
 
Who is this guy spilling the beans? WHY? Its over little shit that isn't in the big picture yet son. You have better work to do than to worry about whats in a Update... 
 
But if this is true - its EA all over again. Thinking they were long gone. I hope and I really hope EA has REALLY, REALLY Changed. 
  
Trust me, I dont like rumors... but when that crap starts the SDF force on lock I have got to wonder...

For the Playface Ho'ing, $299 "We Do Everything" Model of the PS3  

 Oh, Sony you could have gave me a heads up! 
  
Not for your ever so loyal, Anon of the Internet; who has bought the Fat Princess model - who is happy that you finally have two good advertisements for your product.  
 
Who wouldn't sleep with the red headed chick on Playface.jp (im talking that full figured wannabe bossy girl with that bad ass grin at the end of her part of the advertisement...swoon motherfucka...(Says nonsensical broken Japanese that ends in Kawaii). The rest of the ad wasn't bad too (but then we hear that some of the folk on the ads were doing some drugs (Asian Governments cant stand weed)) and the whole idea was once used by the CW Remake Network and the "O"gasm face from some euro dude... But its working for me and the rest of the Japanese (we all can hope) September 3. 
 
As for here, The new ads for PS3 Slimmer, Lighter and more DTS-True HD friendly - says it does "Everything"? NeoGaf hatin but of course they love the BC version of the PS3. (Thats the only regret Sony has yet to rectify and its more of the Japanese Hardware over Software culture that has hindered there Mobile Phone's from being the best in the market - i.e. Palm Pre being better than any new Japanese Phone) Outside of that - Yes, it does everything ... within reason.  
  
As for those adverts, there funny. Really Funny. Not as pseudo-postmodern from the early years of the franchise. I love how they make fun of the whole NeoGaf: Gaf -> Internet -> Gaf meme. The Girlfriend one was nice - but it seems to me that they were working for the NFL Audience for the other ones. The ads should air sometime before the 14th (maybe on the 10th).  
 
Not to be outdone, XBox did a 100 dollar price cut - the elite will cost 299. This has been good news (to be fair to the XBox) for MS after devastating report (54% of all X-Box's get RROD or some other issue) after Censorship Issue (look up Kotaku for that one) after Developers worry (Even Epic said that the 360 has reached its limit and FASA's former CEO stated that MS Corp structure was too heavy) and now after Twitter and Facebook pricing structure (need gold account to access)...Good luck folks. 
 
But the Mainstream Media's darling is asking for a Price Cut... Knowing that its all fun and games with Ninty. But Ninty has pretty much stated we got this (NOT!) and not to worry... (Sounds like they are watching CNBS this days) "What me worry, The Governments will do what Capitalism cant..." 
 
Sounds like Sony is doing the right things at the right time...

The Playstation Zeitgeist Episode 9: PS3 IS HERE!

Oh I am so happy. Thanks to Best Buy (Your 60 bucks insurance check is in the mail) i got the PS3, with arguably the two best games in the system - MGS4 and Killzone2. 


Its... beautiful Big, but Beautiful.  (actually the size is about one 1/3 bigger than the Ps2 mainline and not the slim) - i keep hearing about a PS3 slim - its almost obvious at this point but I still made the push to get it.

This is a underrated machine. Can you imagine if they put google chrome (they can - via updates) on it? ooo lord. But Linux isn't bad. Those that have PS2 support (we will all soon have it if the Patents are accepted) are really lucky. The PS1's show there age - but they dont look too bad. Ill try Xenogears and Chrono Cross later in the week, i have not played these games in a LONG TIME. (I dont have to transfer the PS1 save data since I lost the Memory Card - but once the BC comes back, there is a LOT of PS2 data (that and the hard drive) i transfer to the PS3) 

The Remote Play thing is so boss. It can do so much - when i get those Puroresu matches on the Laptop its going to be amazing. The fact you can play the PS1 games as well too also helps. Not sure about the movies though - 

Speaking of which - I feel I can love movies again. I didn't hate DVD - and it did make a jump - but its a product of its age - Blu-Ray does things that i want - and its one of the best disc based formats since Laserdisc - and the only thing close to it. (there that brightness issue in Akira but thats water under in the bridge)

The PS3 is so awesome and im taking even extra measures to keep it clean, keep the disk feeder clean, the discs spotless - the area around the PS3 spotless even the USB ports (using a dry q tip) spotless.

I will do a review of the Killzone 2 and MGS4 later - but much needs to be said about both games. 

The games that I will get later:

UFC (I know it looks better on X-Box 360 that i will concede that but don't knock on the PS3 version)
Street Fighter 4
Hot Shots Golf 5 (Allot of content was locked on the disc)
Vakrica Chronicles (the Best RPG in the system so far)
Midnight Club "The Return" to LA
Ratchet Series 
Uncharted Series
Folklore (its cheap)
Heavenly Sword... and more

This doesn't it mean its over for the PSP, far from it. 

It doesn't even mean its over for the PS2 (Games) too. 

The future looks bright. Nuff said.

The News is True, but the UMD doesn't die, in fact both services will exist together, so NOBODY should be modding systems because of Not enough games. I would wanted the UMD to be a higher tier, but they haven't figured out how to get more disk space on the UMD. No worries. You Yuppies get your DD i keep my UMD *rasberry*

GT PSP? Catch Cars Like POKEMON? Awesome! 800 cars! 35 FUCKING tracks! 60 frames a second on a UMD? OH HELL YES!

Its a upgrade to the PS EYE - the COPY tech copies objects and puts them on the screen! Hes actually building something? WTF THIS IS SO FUCKING AWSOME ever see a weather report on the news? The Green screen? This takes it to a level beyond that... Build and use as a mouse - MAG just got better... at least you can select 256 units... The Controls are ... beyond precise like it acts like a very good wacom tablet...March - May of next year.

ModRacers is part of the PCS (Play Create Share) genre that LBP started... Interesting... yet another game in 2010.

Sony has 2010 on lock son. But 2009 will not be horrible... just...slow until Oct 1st.  PSP lives, PS3 gets a lot of games, PS2 still moves along. Im thinking that Sony was a little slow but it picked up later - MS had the stars, Ninty tried to hard, Sony was just right.

Not totally about  e3 but it was going to happen. I dislike these games but folks, we reached a point where somebody was going to say Stop and Stop they did.

Does that mean that Equality Now moves on back to the US and starts talking shit about the XBox and PS3? By the time 2012 rolls around the only thing that would be allowed to sell is Wii and the next great parlor game. But then again, the main supporters of Equality Now does include those who are in Jezbel's blog which stated when she was sexually accosted it wasn't important. This is the hight of hypocrisy. But folks, ever since we went to Iraq and Afghanistan this shit was going to continue - we were going to promote our morality on others even at the barrel of a gun. So why should the Occident (the Western World) be surprised beyond belief that when Muslim groups want to promote their Morality on Europe? YOU DID IT TO THEM, NOW THEY DO IT TO YOU. Karmic Man vs Dharmic Man baby, for the world is becoming one and it will be a sad day when it does. 

Metal Gear gets another game to go to the XBox 360 and one more for the PSP. The 360 is for Raiden, the PSP one we are not sure of. Kojima stated on the 360 one will be devopied (not exclusive) for 360 so you got to share folks ^_^. PSP one will be a OMG SO OBVIOUS sequel to one of the greatest games for the PSP, Portable Ops. 
And did i hear correctly that CV is going to be apart of Kojima Productions? Does that mean we see Danjo and Sabata from Botaki again?

As for the Leak of the PSP Go - well at least Sony is Keeping the PSP - 3000 and call the GO a separate Product. But to be honest - its already better than the I-Pod Touch (when it comes...to music) but the Design NEEDS HELP! God Sony, you made the screen smaller and it looks like a... fucking flesh-light! You could have made it look a hell of a lot better! Mylo Redux anyone?

Now that Crysis is going to PS3 and XBOX 360 - one wonders which will look better. I still say the PC but the PS3 version will be surprisingly close. 

On the next post. Sony, Sony, Sony Keynote. We will finally know what will happen to the PSP, why it got support back - is there really a PS3 Slim? GOD Of War 3? Maybe Goddess of War returning (you know who im talking about)

The Playstation Zeitgeist Episode 7: Things I Ponder...

The Anon of the Internet Wonders:


The Depression Isn't Hurting the Wii boys - despite it being still 250 bucks. It's what I stated before, the mainstream media and the Governments of the world are scared of with the PS3 and XBox represent.

But speaking of the XBox, There still using memory cards? So much for being a leader.

We cant blame the Japanese now - they have bought more PS3's than Wii's in the last six weeks to two months - thats being the games being releases back to back to back. They take time it seems like. And since an FF demo outsold every RPG in the generation so far, something tells me its more than just "luck".

The Japanese have a system where they pay the young and old a stipend on which spend on stores. It reeks of Socialism, however it has kept that industry alive for the most part. They still have issues beyond this.

Europe has set laws in place that makes the Wii more viable than XBox and PS3. Only law made Nintendo its money and with out that they would have been washed on the dust. 

The US is a different case. The PS2 Is now 99 bucks - a full three hundred dollars under its younger brother. As long as it makes money then it will continue to do well.

But doing well and doing better are two different things, of course the PS3 will do better. But these are worrisome signs in the mid point of the game.

E3 is coming and the booth babes return. Much to the chagrin of those who live in the anti human societies and Governments of the many states of America. 

Speaking of which, Bayonetta gets a bad rap of being a DMC clone. It may act like DMC, but aspects of the game are more "Wife of Bath" than "Inferno"

The fact that the Internet has bought back a game that was pretty much a memory (Punch Out) and it might sell more than the very impressive UFC Unleashed and the much improved Fight Night 4 showcases a problem and a split between the countries metathemes and maybe its people - it has been like the hulu commercials have stated - the wii has turned the video game meta culture brains into mush.

Speaking of a Brain Drain, the UK has problems keeping its best and brightest in the UK game industry. They are moving to Canada and or France. I got one good reason why, its those CCTV devices. Another one is that you don't want to go back making stuff that you did in high school.

I hope that the Campaign that Sony is planning for the PS3 is sort of like the Apple advertisements. Despite Apple being behind in the things that matter - the mind share these advertisements have had some effect on the future of Microsoft (the quick move to Windows 7 from Vista for example). It is perfect for the yuppies on the fence for high end systems, would humble Wii fans for being such well Marxists and keep Microsoft on their heels. It will sell some games too.

The Sony Store gets a bad rap. Endgaget didn't see what I saw over at the Comcast Center, well groomed men selling product. It kinda scares the Apple yuppies who rarely take a bath. The lights do need a little work.

There seems to be a boredom in the Industry, and that effects sales. That and the fact we are in a deep recession and people worried about jobs and people should be happy about where they are. But what i sense is this might be the second lost generation (the other one was way deep between the first and second gens) the Industry has have. This is because of the Wii, and not about price points and what not. If the Wii was promoted differently, given a different design and wasn't so much about the gimmicks - it would have been a watershed moment in the industry. However because of these gimmicks and now the peherials make more money than the actual game, and people wonder about the good old days when things weren't so confusing and so costly.

The Playstation Zeitgeist Episode 6.5: Games Im playing right now

LocoRoco 2: This game is awesome. Please buy it. They only added 2 or three more Roco's there but the tomboy roco (female) is awesome with her punk-style. The Mui do a heck of a lot more this game. The music is still catchy. The Moja believe it or not are much tougher than in the first game. The Bui Bui are some bad asses and i like the boss battles. Not Patapon 2, but this series is just as inventive as the first.


Star Ocean 2:  Im doing some sort of write up for the series and I loved 1 as it finally got to the states. The second game kinda continues on the first. Its getting to be epic very fast. But Im taking a short break from it.

Street Fighter 4 PS3: I played this game off and on, I hate the shoto (Mostly Ken) online players with a passion. Cheap, Cheap Cheap. Only Use Ryu, Rose, French Dude, El Furte (If you seen Rey Misterio's Elimination Chamber match, and know Furte's moves, let him get hit with the supers (NOT THE ULTRAS Counter the Ultras TRUST ME) and you will fuck every shoto that comes your way - he is based on the reversal and the counter) They moved the storyline (if there is one) toward the third game well. 

Killzone 2: I love the game BUT its is very strict. The cover system is good but like I said, too strict. I want a sequel already they have something here. 

Working on seeing if i can get the Japanese version of Patapon 2 But im not sure if it has a english option.

I am happy that my PSP has been fixed. 
But now Patapon 2 has no UMD.

UGH. 

I loved Patapon. It is the game Ninty should have done years ago. But sadly they were too busy doing sequels, and more sequels and not taking risks. It was the Reeses's Cup of Video Games. The best Handheld Game I have ever played.

Granted, for small games that take less than 10 hours to play ... and game makers starting out I don't MIND if they do downloads. If it leads to a larger game that will be place on disk then yes make it happen.

But this is a near 40 hour game. I was HAPPY to go to a store and pay for it. Im just disappointed - why sacrifice Patapon 2 for your test case?

The Pirates are fighting a losing war and they know it. So why do a test case for a game that other game makers might want to emulate in the future? I see a lot of good things in the Loco/Pata franchises that could take Gaming to the level the Wii fucking fails at. And now, even the media realizes that numbers don't matter and good games will come out of the Wii GUNK and Pussy detritus they showcase every other day on Disney XD and the like.

Its kinda frustrating. I want to get the PS3 soon, i need time but it seems time is running out. The PSP has gotten much better - but I'm worried that its going to be a more Japanese machine (not that there is anything wrong with that) because Some at Sony are hell bent on dumping the UMD drive in favor of a more Itunes/Phone/Touch format.

There is a reason why I only buy Apples Computers and not the rest of the junk - because folks, they do make good computers but unlike Sony that makes things that have functions (even if its for one game) Apples "toys" are for doushes, and i dont see whats the great thing in having so many apps (that you have to pay 20 bucks a pop in the Itouch if i hear correctly) when most of them you can already do by hand, and all the other tech shouldn't be on the Iphone (like the credit card one and the shipping label one) because what happens if somebody made a app that could steal from the other ones? Or you lose the phone!? They have the phone the sim card and the apps! It doesn't even matter if 12 out of 16 numbers are blank they still have ways of getting to it. Dont get me started on the TIPPING app or the BOOK app...

The PSP is pretty much the continuation of the Game Boy Advance and the Pocketstation - it does three things well. Can it do other things just as well? We dont know Sony has been a little late on some of the ideas they had from the first production model. But the UMD was a good idea. I dont want them to just drop it - how about improve on it? They have been very successful with the Blu-Ray. Use some of the tech in that one for any new UMD...

My problem is that this DigiDistro is too young, too easy to copy (notice that most of the big game games need the Disk in order to play the some of the downloaded items) and Sony is doing a disservice by doing this "test case". You have too many talented game artists in your sphere of influence to do just go DigiDistro. I know they want money. I just feel a Disk gives them respect. 

Ill get LocoRoco 2 later in the week - Just a little saddened that it wasn't  the continuation of the next great game franchise.

The Playstation Zeitgeist Episode 5.5 - Update on my PSP issues

So after a long wait, I got the money to get the PSP fixed (or replaced). It took a little while to do so. Reason being that yes - the webside side of their service center stated my PSP's Serial Number was invalid (that doesnt really make any sense because the last two times I placed it in it worked, i just didnt had the money to go forward).

So we go to the phone side. Its a little long to get to customer service but when I do, it only takes a while but its done well. I was very pleased that NOTHING has changed from the days that I had to get my PS2 fixed way back when. Sure 89 bucks is NOTHING to snezze at. Microsoft with all of its money and all of its power still has shoddy service. I hear from neogaf that 360's CS is horrible (at best) and non existant (at worse) and with Ninty's its here or there.

This if not anything else is one of the reasons why I stick with sony through thick and thin, through all of the BS it gets from the fame-stream media and the like.
