Two words: Heavy Rain. Another two words: Holy shit.
Damn you, PS3. Sitting there in the electronics department, so tempting and so expensive. I remember when the PS3 first came out. It sounded like shit to me. Sure, it had the blu-ray player and it looked kinda cool, but it wasn't backwards compatible and it didn't have good launch games going for it. At least, it didn't seem like it had anything to offer for a gamer like me. I was 100% X-BOX 360.
Halo 3? Hell yeah, Halo 3.
Of course, that was before the red circle of death and the half-assed backwards compatibility. It still doesn't support TimeSplitters 2! Grrr.........Don't get me wrong. I may be WAY late in the game, but I still would love to have an X-BOX 360. It's just that now I look at games like Metal Gear Solid 4 and Heavy Rain, and the PS3 just looks so much more amazing. That leaves us with the Wii, which doesn't remotely appeal to me (Mario Kart Wii is great though, I will admit).
Heavy Rain might be the first original step in video gaming I've seen in a long time. It's an experience like almost no other. And I remember thinking Indigo Prophecy was amazing and unique. David Cage is slowly becoming this decades Kenji Eno. He is a man that doesn't just want to design a good video game. He wants to design an experience. A memorable, emotional, immersive, unique experience and Heavy Rain is one of few games I've ever seen where you have that kind of experience. Now for the bigger question. Where will he go from here? How do you follow up a game like Heavy Rain? Will he deliver another unique, emotional experience or will he just retread new ground? I don't know. All I know is I can't wait to see what he has in store.
It's going to really suck if all of his games stay PS3 exclusive. Oh well. Until I get enough money for the PS3 (which won't be in this decade), I guess I'm stuck with my trusty ol' PC.
