They're trying to take advantage of harried moms just trying to get out of the store with the DS game their screaming kid wants. It's not illegal or anything but it's definitely unethical to try to slip extra charges in like that.
If he accidentally hit the button he wouldn't have said "including our disc protection guarantee." I worked for Gamestop for 2 years in a managerial role and this very much sounds like something a scummy store manager might try. Those guarantees are very difficult to sell and corporate once or twice a year gets a bug up its ass about it and district managers start pressuring store managers to make it a priority.
It's Gamestop, you guys. If they do something shady it probably wasn't an accident.
EDIT: To be clear, this is almost certainly not any kind of official practice. It's probably just an 'unintended' product of the company culture.
That takes bad employees for that to happen. Even at GameStop, company policy prevents them from taking broken games. Bring them back in with a receipt and tell them they didn't work and you'll get your money back.
What about at a different gamestop? will they still give me some money back?
The reason that games aren't verified with a console is that there aren't *nearly* enough hours allocated to any store to be able to do it. That said, if you get a game that's obviously scratched up then someone fucked up.
Policy is that if you have your receipt you can return them to ANY Gamestop. If you don't, they don't have to give you any kind of refund, but if you take it to the same store and give them a date/time you bought it they can try to find the transaction they were sold in. Returning it to a different store is pretty dicey and they'll usually tell you no. They CAN do it though, it just depends on how nice and comfortable with going outside of policy the person you talk to is.
Everyone knows the favorites menu, but you can also have two quick equips on d-pad left/right, to do this open the favorites menu and hold left or right on an item, a number will appear by them to indicate it's hot-keyed.
