GOTY 2011

2011 was a great gaming year for me. As one game was completed, another took it's place.

But as this list is limited to ten games, some did not make the cut. Honorable mentions to Shadows of the Damned, Trenched/Iron Brigade, inFamous 2, Battlefield 3, L.A. Noire, Mortal Kombat, Assassins Creed: Revelations & Super Mario 3D Land, all great games that I really enjoyed, but not enough to make this list.

I will now stop this little text with the hopes that you enjoy my list!

One more thing, while I will try not to spoil anything, I can't promise that one or two spoilers may sneak in. You have been warned!

List items

  • I've played 90+ hours of this so far, and after I've shortened my backlog a little I'll probably go back for more. And with all the content I have left to see, I have no idea how many hours I will spend on this.

Any game that can deliver that much content and make every second of it fun and interesting deserves the top spot.

  • I love Batman. I love being Batman even more. I thought that making the sequel to one of my favorite games of all time even better then the first would be an impossible task, but Rocksteady somehow pulled it off.

Improving on almost every aspect the made Arkham Asylum so great grants Arkham City the number two spot.

  • How do you make portal better? You make it bigger and crazier. As many have said before me, the story and the great acting performances of Stephen Merchant, Ellen McLain & J.K. Simmons (and of course, Nolan North) really makes this one stand out.

A quite obvious, but still really good twist keeps the game interesting 'til the end, and the puzzels are probably the most rewarding in a long time.

And then we have the co-op, something I did not think too about much before release, but once I sat down to play it split-screen with a friend, we did not stop until we hade completed it, and is one of the best gaming memories I have in recent years.

Portal 2 claims a solid third place. Spaaaaaaaace!

  • The Gears of War series has always been a favorite of mine, but as often stated always lacked the character depths and that little extra in the story department to really climb to the top. Epic really changed that with the final part in the trilogy.

The members of Delta Squad feels more alive than ever, the story is great and ends the trilogy nicely, though some questions are sadly left unanswered. And they finally add a part that matches the tone of those wonderful trailers!

And when the story dust sets, a great multi-player mode and terrific co-op modes awaits.

All this helps Gears of War 3 to place number four.

  • I started playing Skyward Sword with a few doubts. While I enjoyed Twilight Princess, it's the only Zelda game that I've never replayed. Could Nintendo make another really great Zelda, or could they have lost the touch? Gladly, they still got it.

It may have started a little slow, but once it started going, it got me for good. The motion controles work great, and keeps you on your toes all the time. Interesting characters and varied environments makes the game feel fresh all the way to the end.

But the slow start and the lack of interesting side-quests stops this game from climbing higher than number five.

  • This game is insane. Insanely awesome! How someone can make a game this crazy escapes my understanding, but makes me so happy they did!

I lost count on how many times I laughed in just the first hours, and the craziness just keeps increasing from there. Great controls keeps the game fun to play, something the GTA series has always lacked in my opinion.

Sadly, I have not played nearly as much as I want of this, as there are many more games (and real-life responsibilities) to take care of, and that's why Saints Row: The Third stops on number six.

  • As a member of Giant Bomb, I was exposed to Bastion quite early, and has claimed my interest since the beginning. And it surely delivered. Beautiful graphics combined with one of the best soundtracks in years makes this an instant classic.

The narrator, the tight controls and the many choices to deal out damage make this something really special, and puts this one on number seven, and the only downloadable game on this list.

  • While I enjoy horror games and movies, very few actually manage to scare me. Dead Space 1 did that, and 2 did not spare anything to scare me even more.

A great script, amazing graphics and even more amazing sound design made the Necromorphs and the people of Titan really stand out. Add a lot of great set pieces and you have a game that both had me constantly wishing to play more, even though every turn had me hesitate, afraid to see what was lurking behind it.

And with that ending, I'm really looking forward to see whats next. If it wasn't for all the other great games this year, Dead Space 2 would probably be higher up, but now it stops at number eight.

  • As with Saints Row: The Third, I have not played this nearly as much as I want, but the time I spent with it so far have been great.

The art style and the music as top class, and makes it a joy to play. I have not spent any time in single-player mode, but the co-op has proved to be both hectic and hilarious.

Some strange control choices annoys me though, and with the above stated fact of not enough play time grants Rayman Origins the number nine spot.

  • Atlus games have never really caught my interest until I saw Persona 4 for the first time. While I have still not played though that (something I plan to change one day), it helped me open my eyes for Catherine. It seemed to be something special, doing things other games never did.

The quite adult story is great, dealing with problems as Vincent was a wonderful experience, and spending time drinking and talking to the other costumers in the bar never got old. The puzzle elements of the game proved to be challenge, and even though some went on a little too long, never got boring.

The cliché "anime twist" was a let down, and puts this on number ten, lower than it would have placed without it.
